Case Study: Creative Activities for Kids – Festive Edition

This case study explores the story of the 2022 Connected Falkirk Creative Activities for Kids Festive Edition and how schools engaged with and extended the range of iPad based challenges.

Context

The festive period often involves a lot of creative activities in schools. Connected Falkirk created a suite of eight short creative projects which allow pupils to explore their iPad features further and use their device to make a range of seasonal artefacts with the aim of bringing some digital creativity and digital skill building to the festive period in school.

What did you do?

Starting with a launch event for pupils we introduced the Creative Activities for Kids Festive Edition, participated in a festive Kahoot (well done to our winners P7H at Westquarter Primary School) and completed task one ‘Seasonify Something’ together. This event kick started the resource and we saw many classes taking part in the remaining challenges over the following days and weeks.

Alongside the digital task sheet with written instructions we also provided a video for each of the challenges which demonstrated how to get started. These videos were designed for use in class with children and young people and we saw many classes making use of these to introduce the tasks after the live event. The current total views across all videos is 1,047 and counting!

What was the impact?

We saw lots of pupils engaging with creative activities on their devices with a number of teachers reporting high levels of engagement and fun. There has also been evidence of pupils discovering and exploring apps they have never used previously with some teachers telling us that it has given them and their learners ideas for other uses for these apps in the future – Clips and Maps tended to be the most popular of this category.

We have also seen on Twitter a number of pupils who attended the live session taking the ‘Seasonsify Something’ task and leading this with classes elsewhere in the school as well as encouraging other classes in their school to take up some of the creative challenges.

An unexpected but very exciting development was seeing how pupils who were already participating in the #Falkirkfitmas2022 challenges from @FalkirkSport combined their new knowledge and skills of iPad apps and features into the completion of these activities. This seems to have been a natural crossover from pupils and teachers taking the initiative and making connections to enhance both sets of challenges.

Pupil Voice

“I liked making cards because it was creative and fun.” – Brooke

” I liked the book because I like reading it to the wee ones” – Jaxon

“I know I’m not a pupil but I loved it!” – Miss Hedges

Where next?

The success of the live event has made us consider expanding this type of activity in future at other points in the year. We will also be contacting @FalkirkSport to look at potential collaboration for the next festive period to possibly bring Fitmas and digital skill building together.
