Our Book Club

Most of the children in our class like to read, and so the people who do, formed a book club. We meet every Tuesday from 11:00am to 11:30am. We swap books and then the next week we tell the people about our likes and dislikes on that book.We have split the book club into two groups but sometimes we meet up as one.We usually read a paragraph of our favourite bits. You can take as many books as you want but you have got to keep track of who has your books. Then we ask anyone who wants our books and swap. Our clubs are called the Book Worms and in each club there is a Captain Worm. Jaydean is the captain of our club and Monica is the captain of the other.

This week we were all together and took pictures of our books and said our favourite parts then made them into a movie. You can see this on the blog. Soon we might start to fundraise so we can go shopping and buy books that the people in the club would like to read. If you borrow a book you have to put a sticky on it to say who it is. We have to get a variety of books because there are boys as well. Not just girly books . Not only we are just a book club but we write large stories. Maryam is the first to try this out and her story is fabulous. Here is a link to her wiki where you can read it.

Here is a video of some of us describing our favourite book, or reading an extract from it.

Darcie's Wish :)

Darcie has been writing some great posts – you can click on her ‘weemee’ to take you to her blog

She wrote:

I keep having these moment where i want to write something but go to write and can’t think of anything! Some days i have good ideas and make long posts but others i am siting staring at the screen thinking of what to write. At first i thought great a blog, somewhere to put my thoughts and feelings and i had millions of things i thought about putting on but know i am stuck on what to write about lol! But like don’t get me wrong i love writing as you can maybe see but i just have these days where nothing comes to my head . Well i suppose this is an idea for a post! Haha!!!!!!

Then she wrote:

“Have you ever wished you could do something or be someone? Well i have and i would like to share it. When i was young i always wished that i was famous but now i realise that they are just normal people but just have more money, as they have been very successful.

But now my mind has changed as i am older. I wish that i could fly and be invisible. I know it sounds weird but if you think about it’s quite cool . Anyway i think it would be great to be invisible and be able to fly as you could go ANYWHERE (and i mean anywhere) in the world!

If you could, comment back and say what you wish you could do or someone you wish to be!”

What a great post … and thank you Darcie for inspiring me to write a post, too.

Click on the weemee below to take you there 🙂

I wonder if any other P7V’s have been struggling with what to write? Maybe Darcie is right … just go for it 🙂

Science, Engineering and Technology Fair

ineos3.jpg

Around 2000 Primary 7  children from all the Falkirk schools are taking part in this exciting event. It was our turn to go along on Friday this week.

The SET fair is supported by INEOS and is part of the My Future’s in Falkirk  initiative. It was a very busy day:

Build a Bug Workshop

We became an electronic engineer for the day when we made our fully electronic Jitterbugs.

Wood Technology Workshop

Here we made our own kites

‘Who wants to be a Scientist?’ Workshop

Here we learned about the many exciting careers that can develop from taking science subjects in High School

K’Nex design challenge

Problem solving and team work were at the forefront of this activity. We were challenged to use the K’Nex kits to design and construct a distillation tower. We had to stick to the strict guidelines … and teachers were not allowed to help!

We captured some of the moments in this video:

February 'Voices of the World' Task

Our February task for Voices of the World was to present the numbers 1 – 10 in our own language. We were also introduced to Photostory3 and managed to get it downloaded to one of our networked computers this week.

We had great fun with this task! We worked in small groups to come up with our number representations .. thank you AllStars for the idea 🙂

The groups had to come up with an ‘audio idea’ to accompany the visual representation of the numbers, and then we voted for the best one. Darren’s group had the most popular rap …. what do you think?

Googlevideo is sometimes not available in our schools, so we’ve made an alternative  ……luckily our video is very short – so using photobucket was ok this time 🙂

Primary 7V ARE Photographers!

courtney-photo2.jpg

The children of Primary 7V were let loose this week with our new Canon 350D digital camera. Their task was to photograph ‘the coolest things in school’.  This is the focus of our new Photo-a-day challenge.

We used Photostory 3 to help make this video. Thank you Mrs Tonner from our Voices of the World project for introducing us to this great resource:)

Wonderful Wiki Writing!

Miss Law asked Primary 7V to choose what they wanted to write about this week ……. and they came up with some great ideas!

Some P7’s decided that they wanted to share their writing on their wikis today. We didn’t have much time in the computer suite, but a small snippet of their writing is included below.

Click on their ‘weemees’ to be transported to their PBwiki spaces 🙂

wee-chloek.png Chloe is writing a playscript called ‘Mystery Book’. She’d love to see the finished script acted out!

wee-rebecca.pngRebecca’s story is called ‘The Tunnel’. If you like a good mystery story, this one is for you 🙂

weeninam.pngNina’s writing piece entitled ‘Yesterday’ – brilliant title and great introduction!

weemaryams.pngMaryam’s ‘Evil Teacher’ epic ….. I’ve heard the whole thing – it’s scary!!

weebethanyr.pngBethany’s ‘Daisy in Candyland’ promises to be a great read 🙂

Some More Great P7V Blog Posts!

Primary 7V have some great posts recently! For example, Anna posted:

I have decided to do a thing weekly called ‘quote of the day’! I will find some inspirational quotes from celebs or someone i know and post them. What do you think?  Anyway here is my first one D

‘Somewhere along the line i made the switch and was able to look at the bright side rather than the dark side all the time. Now i look at everything i have and think how lucky i am’-Michelle Pfeiffer

And there’s more from Anna 🙂

Here is another really inspiring quote…

‘All your dreams come true,If you have the courage to pursue them’ -Walt Disney

You can visit Anna’s blog by clicking on her weemee wee-annaj.png

Ainsley has been blogging about her love of drawing…

“I just love to draw pictures , it’s really fun. I am quite good at drawing. Last night i drew Eyore , i tried to draw Winnie the pooh and piglet but that didn’t work out , i drew pluto , donald duck and daffy duck. I stuck some of my pictures on the wall in my bed room but i couldn’t put all of them up because i ran out of blue tack.”

You can visit Ainsley’s blog, too – just click on her weemee!

weeainsley2.jpg

Hobbies!

Some of Primary 7V have been blogging about their hobbies. You can read their posts here. You can also click on their ‘Weemee’s’ to visit their individual blogs.

weebethanyr.png Bethany has been writing about her interest in drawing.

Miss law is the student that is in our class at the moment and she is really cool! ) She has great ideas for work and likes to draw. We started up a drawing club when she came as she is such a brilliant drawer and we want her to help us and give us some tips! Its quite fun and sometimes people come out with some pretty good pieces of art work!”

 pencils   Pencils

She’s also considering taking up photography after our visit from John. She wrote:

“……even just having photography as a hobbie would be good, taking pictures of anything. I think that being a photographer would be quite expensive though ( so i dont know how much I would be willing to pay just for a hobbie!”

wee-fraserm.pngFraserM wrote a great post about his hobbies. He wrote:

“I have quite a lot of hobbies but my two favourite are probably guitar and football. Football is my favourite hobby. I play football at the park with my friends and I also play with a football team called Gairdoch United. I play defense and I don’t score many goals. I used to play up front and then midfield but now I play defense.

My other hobby is guitar. I’ve been  playing for about five years. I play the guitar below.

Its a black statacaster. I got it last year for my birthday from my Uncle Andy, Auntie Fiona, and my two cousins Kirsten and Kieran.”

weerhianne.jpgRhiann loves to perform on the stage. She wrote:

“At the Falkirk childrens theatre that i’m in. We are doing Treasure Island. I auditioned for one of the principal parts but I got in the chorus instead. Oh well it doesn’t really matter if i’m not a principal. I could maybe try another time. Anyway i’m a sailor in the chorus which should be quite good because there is pirates as well as sailors in the chorus. I would rather be a sailor anyway because they are cleaner than pirates and i would say they are easier to play as a part. So i can’t wait to see the costumes and to do the show in April, it’s going to be great. In May there is a Big in Falkirk show they do every year so i’m going to be going to audition that and hope i get into it. I don’t know what show they are doing for it be it should be good. At christmas we are doing Oliver which is a really gd film so i can’t wait to audition for that either. All the shows that they are doing this year sound really gd and i hope i get a main part as one of them. lol I think  The Falkirk childrens theatre is a gd theatre to go to. )

wee-sophie.pngSophie just loves Art. Everyone in class is always amazed by her wonderful pictures! She wrote:

“My hobbie is art. In art there are lots of different things to do such as drawing cutting sticking colouring and more.

The benefit of my hobbie is that I can hang my art work on the wall and make my house look nice. The person involved with my art work is my art teacher. You need equipment for art for example paint brushes, paper, scissors, glue and more. The best feature about art is the way in which you can express your feelings in a creative way. You could also sell your paintings for money.

I would recommend my hobby to others because no matter what skill level you are, you can make something fabulous and feel a real sense of acheivement!!”

We’d love to know what others do in their spare time. Leave a comment and let us know!

Transported Back in Time!

Primary 7V were transported back to 1941 when we visited Callendar House this week. We were divided into 2 groups. One group was evacuated, the other group examined real artifacts from WW2. We changed places so that we could experience both activities.

We learned such a lot, and we’d like to say a big thank you to the three ladies who made our visit so worthwhile.

One group was evacuated … it was quite an experience. The three videos below capture the tense atmosphere!

First of all we had to register and collect our Ration Books and Identity Cards.

[googlevideo]-1036471962312455472&hl=en-GB[/googlevideo]

Next, we had to listen carefully as we were issued with our Gas Mask instructions.

[googlevideo]-8964798989935385171&hl=en-GB[/googlevideo]

Finally, we arrived at our destination.

[googlevideo]-2333025869291257306&hl=en-GB[/googlevideo]

Meanwhile, the other group examined artifacts from World War 2. This group had to wear gloves to help preserve the items. Everyone gave a short presentation about what they had discovered. The animoto video below captures some of the moments.

World of Work Series – Becoming a Writer .. 2

mr-white1.jpg Facts we learned about becoming a writer – by Anna, Nina and Monica (photograph by Russell).

  • Proof Readers check your work, but they don’t read the book from ‘cover to cover’ in case they get too caught up in the story and miss any mistakes. So they start from the back of the book instead

  • It’s much easier to write a book now that we have computers. Before that, the writer used a typewriter and printed off the story and the printer had to re-type everything

  • You need to find somebody to publish your book

  • There are different ways of binding a book. Mr White’s newest book has the most expensive method. Cheaper, older methods can mean that the book falls apart easily

  • It takes about a year to write a book but the book Mr White is writing this year may only take a few months as it as not as long as his others

  • He has written  loads of books and has a previous one coming out. This one will be about a mystery story and it sounds quite good.It is set in Grangemouth,Falkirk and is a story about a murder

  • He also in his spare time writes for The Times. He has wrote a set of books all about Falkirk Football Club throughout the ages. His set of books started of with Volume 1 and is still writing the other sequels

  • His two books the 50th anniversary and the Big book of lists are both ringbinders. You can see them on our class blog!(the post down below)

  •  We would like to thank Mr White for coming and telling us about his book.It was an interesting talk and we learned loads.

The World of Work Series …. Becoming a Writer

Mr White came to talk to us today about his job as a writer. His books are about the history of Falkirk Football Club Players …… ‘The Brockville Bairns’!

………………..

It’s really exciting, because he left us 3 signed copies of his latest book. We’re going to have a competition to determine the lucky winners!!

He also left copies of 2 earlier books written by him – all the books he left for us are pictured below.

It will appear on here soon 😀

The 'World of Work' series …….more on John's photographs

Yesterday, John told us about a photograph he was glad to have taken. He explained how he happened to be in a position to be able to capture the moment.

Isn’t it great!!!!

P7V are on holiday today … but the teachers have to work 🙁

…… It wasn’t ALL bad, though, because John’s mum is a teacher in our school and she told me that he has his own website where more of his pictures are displayed. You can visit it HERE.

John has offered to come back and give us some more tips on how to take a good photograph. Meanwhile, you can look out for some of the pictures taken by P7V yesterday when we went outside to experiment with our new fancy camera!

We’ll post some on our Photo-a-Day blog soon 😀

The World of Work series … Photography!

[googlevideo]6918163719352799907&hl=en-GB[/googlevideo]

John came to school to talk to us about photography. Last session’s primary 7 class met John when he helped us with our Photo-a-Day project.

john-summers.gif

This year’s P7’s are going to re-start this project – and we’re in the process of electing photographers, writers and editors.

Some P7’s have been blogging about John’s visit. Anna wrote:

‘Today we had John Summers in. He is a photographer and a very good 1 at that! It was so koooooool! He let a little group go out and take pictures in the playground they were really good.I liked courtneys 1 with the sky in it and russell’s 1 when he was taking a pic of courtney  and she was taking a pic of him across the bench D I was thinking maby i could be a Fashion Photographer?Cause they are 2 of my fav things.Well..today i found out about photography and it was good.’

Courtney also put on a blog post. She wrote:

‘Hi today we had John in. he was talking about Photos as he is a photographer – he was nice and i was really interested as i Kinda want t be one when i’m older. I have learned sooo much …..’

He gave is a copy of a photograph he’s particularly proud of … we’ll post it tomorrow – it’s super!!

Scottish Poem Competition

Carronshore Primary School and Carron Primary School have a traditional ‘Scottish Poetry’ competition every year around this time. We invite the Higginsneuk Burns Club to judge the entries.

It’s always VERY tense waiting for the winning Primary School to be announced!

burns-comp.jpg

…………… and the winner this year was – Carron Primary School!! Well done to all of them – they were great 🙂

Carronshore were the hosts this time and we provided some great entertainment while the judges counted up their scores. Although it’s a poetry competition, the ‘interval entertainment’ gives lots of pupils the opportunity to show off their talents.

Aimee from Carronshore’s Primary 6W/N had the audience captivated by her fantastic dancing display!

The World of Work!

Recently Primary 7V have been ‘blogging’ about what jobs they might like to have in the future.

Maryam posted this on her blog in January:

“I’ve been thinking of being a book writer. Well, i dont know yet but i love reading books and i always like writing stories. I might start writing more on my wiki.  My room has quite alot of books flooding everywhere. …… “

Ainsley  also wants to be a writer. She wrote:

“i just love reading books, i dont know why, i just love it. I love to write stories and read stories. When i am older i want to become a writer and write lots of things ( but i dont know yet what i am going to write) ……..”

Nina wrote a super post about the decisions we have to make in life. You can read some of it here:

“Decisions. There is so much decisions in life there right in front of you, some are hard and some are easy (i tend to ask for advice on the hard).

…… But the one thing that is the hardest i think is what your career should be. Well when we were young we all wanted to be heroes and heroines like firemen, Police, Vets, doctor, teachers, dancers and more. But when you get older you start to think more about this. I’m not old enough to get a job yet of course but it just makes me think.

……. Here are a few jobs i’d like to do and why. Well my first one is a Journalist i’d like to do this because i like to find out things and it would be interesting and i think i’m alright at writing. I’d like to get in touch with a newspaper and get better at my writing…….”

Anna also wrote a post:

“…………Well when i’m older i really want to be something along the lines of a Journalist. (eg;Fashion magazine editor;Write:Journalist) That kinda stuff. ….

We are really lucky, because Mrs Hart’s daughter is a Journalist. We asked her if we could interview her about her job. You can watch the interview below.

[googlevideo]-6828930528548396623&hl=en-GB[/googlevideo]

Sometimes ‘Google Video’ doesn’t work in school, so we’ve uploaded it to ‘TeacherTube’, too  – but the quality and the sound isn’t as good 🙁

Download Video: Posted by carronshore at TeacherTube.com.

Hopefully, we’ll be able to get some more information about ‘The World of Work’ soon. Here are some more of our thoughts …

Russell wants to be a policeman like his dad. He wrote:

“…… When i grow up i would either like to be a normal police officer which is like solving crimes and stuff. Or in the traffic police, which is like catching speeders and arriving at motorway accidents or illegal number plates. Or be in the armed responce unit which are the police with guns and go to accident which suspects are armed….”

Bethany is going to ‘go with the flow’ – she wrote:

“…… I also used to want to be either a vet or a teacher until i found out that being a vet can involve putting animals down.:( ! A teacher i am still considering with about a million other jobs).

If you think about it there is so much out there so i will just have to go with the flow and see what life throws at me!”

Monica joined in, too, with this post:

“When i am older i would like to become a singer. I would go on the X factor. I have always been quite shy. So that would be a thing i would need to work on…..”

Does anyone know Leon? …. or any other famous singers who might be willing to come and be interviewed 😀

A Very Scottish Day!!

 burns6.jpg

Today in school, we celebrated everything Scottish!

There was poetry, dance …… and some drama, too! We had a fantastic afternoon (shortbread and irn bru as well!)

Before we all met in our school hall, Primary 7V had a practice in the classroom and we recorded some of the action on video.

First of all, Jaydean acted out her ‘Stageworks’ performance ……….

[kml_flashembed movie="http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docid=5833473195051647791" width="400" height="326" wmode="transparent" /]

Next, our ‘Wee Malkies’ and the poor women they ‘tormented’ made an appearance. Thanks to Miss Law for all her ideas and help with this performance 🙂

Everyone agreed that the whole afternoon was a superb success ……. well done ALL of Primary 7 😀

Mr White came to talk to us today about his Dad’s role in World War 2. It was so interesting to listen to his Dad’s story .

mr-white-5.jpg

We interviewed Mr. White after his talk to find out more!

We also found out that Mr White has written 6 books. We have invited him back to talk again because some of primary 7V think that they might want to be writers too!

🙂

Mr White showed us his Dad’s Medal from World War 2.

It’s worth a lot of money, but Mr White said that his family can’t part with it!!

Primary 7V are having a wonderful time listening to how times have changed over the years!

Life is very different now ……… click on the ‘weemee’ images below to be taken back in time.

Some memories go back to the 1930’s!

We wrote thank you letters today to show how much we appreciate the time taken to record these memories …………. and there’s lots more to come, too, so stay tuned 🙂

Please remember that the wee ‘mp3 icons’ don’t work – click on the images instead (be patient …… it’s really worth waiting for the podcasts to load!)

Who Did We Think We Were?

We are going to be learning about life during WW2. Before we do that we wanted to get a sense of history, so we made up interview questions to ask an older person in our family. Some of us interviewed our mums or dads, some interviewed grans, grandads … even great grans and grandads.

We want to say a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to them all ………. we learned loads listening to what life was like in the past!!

We’ve included just a few of them here ………. but promise lots more great interviews to follow in our next few posts.

Click on the ‘weemee’ pics below to take you to the interviews.

The wee ‘mp3 icons’ don’t work – just ignore them 🙂

Our Plays …….

Primary 7V worked very hard to convert their stories into playscripts…. and then into plays!  They’re really keen to see the final results!

Have a look at the first to get published!!!!

[kml_flashembed movie="http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docid=-7166740416005873593" width="400" height="326" wmode="transparent" /]

Our Plays

In school we have been making small movies up. We got into groups and came up with a few ideas. Then we brainstormed what would happen. Mrs Vass and the class then commented on your different plays and then we changed the bits our classmates were unsure about. Then we went up-to the costume room that they used for accent on schools and we picked out our clothes but we did not take them.We then showed Miss Law who is a student teacher our plays in our groups she decided if it was ok or not.We fixed our plays then showed our class. Then we changed our stories into scripts for a writing lesson. Then we showed our plays again. In the future weekswe will be videoing them and they might go on the blog!movie1.jpg
