Random Acts of Wildness

Hello everyone,
We hope you are all well and finding some fun things to do. The good weather has meant we are able enjoy the outdoors even more than usual and there has been so much to see at this time of year with all the new life that is growing.
Mrs MacLeod saw this Peacock butterfly in her garden, and Mrs Small has a blue tit that sits right outside her bedroom window.

The Scottish Wildlife Trust is inviting everyone to join in 30 Days Wild,  doing one different Wild Thing each day, and this is something the children have enjoyed doing in nursery in the past. You can sign up to join in 30 Days Wild for free, and receive a digital set of cards with simple and easy Wild things to do each day. The children have the fun of choosing a different card each day.  Some examples are below:

You can find great ideas for other wild things to do and make at home at this link:

Why not send us any photos of Wild things you have seen or done to our Twitter account?

Activity Ideas

Good morning everybody,

We hope you’ve had a lovely Easter holiday and found plenty to do at home.  We’ve missed seeing you in nursery, please keep sharing your photos with us on Twitter or comment on our blog posts.

Below are some more ideas for learning at home.

Literacy and English

  • In the garden, use a paint brush and a bowl of water to practise mark-making skills.  You could paint lines, shapes, pictures, numbers, letters or words.
  • Make up a silly story about a naughty spider.  What have they been getting upto?  You could tell your story, draw it or ask someone to write the words for you.
  • Keep practising writing your name.  Remember the first letter needs to be a capital letter and is bigger than the other letters.  Do you have a middle name? Try that too!

Numeracy and Mathematics

  • Sing ‘Five Little Ducks’ and use 5 toys to be the ducks.  Each time a duck swims away, take a toy away.  Notice how there are fewer ducks.
  • Talk to your grown up about the number 0.  What does this number mean and what number comes after it? Have a look for this number on phones, calculators and anywhere else you can find it. Practise writing this number. Do you recognise the number 10 or 100.  There are zeros in them!
  • From your bedroom window, count how many trees you can see.  Then try from your front door.  Which view has more?

Health and Wellbeing

  • Choose a song you love and make up a short dance. Teach it to your family and maybe share with us on Twitter!
  • On the Earthwatch Europe Facebook page, there are ten activity cards sharing ideas for exploring nature using toilet roll tubes.  An example is shared below:

We hope these ideas are helpful and that you have lots of fun learning at home.

Library visits

Some of the children have been visiting Busby Library this week.  They were so excited to learn about all the different activities going on in our local community library.

Peter the librarian read us some lovely books and told us how to join the library.

We voted for our favourite book and ‘Wolfie the Bunny’ won.              “I loved the bit when Dot said she would eat the bear from the toes up, it’s a bit scary but funny”.

Check Out Our Moves

The children have been very busy and active in gym, working their hearts, muscles and imaginations in Creative Movement. They have been moving it to Jazz music, Swing, Salsa and Techno!

Make your move and copy your friends

Fly like a superhero
Chattanooga Choo Choo
They also like to move it outdoors and in the MUGA, where they have been developing their core strength,  jumping, balancing and ball skills.

Having A Wild Time

Exploring in Busby Church Gardens

Balloon chasing

Under the log we found wood louse, a centipede, slugs and slugs eggs…

“I want to hold the slugs eggs.”

We had a Wild Time in Busby Church Gardens:
– looking for birds and bugs, and ticking them off on our charts
– making “nests” and a “camp fire” with twigs and stones
– experimenting with balloons in the wind
– running free!

Spicing it Up

This week the children spent a long time experimenting in our
Spices Kitchen – smelling, mixing, pouring and describing as they made some very interesting potions, recipes and concoctions…

Some comments from our Young Cooks & Scientists:
“We’re mixing a new potion. Come on, let’s see what colour it makes. Potion No.1 & Potion No.2…”
“What happens when you put this in?… It’s turning yellow… now it’s turned orange.”
“How about this? This is going to be the spiciest one ever!”
“Smell ours, it’s the tastiest.”
“Now we’ve made soup…. and spicy potatoes. They smell yummy!”
“Smell the rosemary. I like that.”
“Look at our porridge. Let’s smell it. I like to put cinnamon in my porridge.”
“They turn squooshy in the water (oats)…
not crunchy.”

If anyone in the family has old/out-of-date spices not needed, please feel free to donate them for further experiments!
