About the Canadian Science Scholarship
The Baird of Bute Society was established to honour Andrew Blain Baird a humble Bute blacksmith who in 1910 achieved the First Attempted All-Scottish Heavier than Air Powered Flight in an aircraft of his own design and manufacture. The Society employs Baird’s example to Inspire the youth of Scotland to Aspire to greatness in their lives through school programmes, awards and scholarships.
The Baird of Bute Society Canadian Science Scholarship has been offered since 2014 to provide two S6 Leavers, selected from across Scotland, the opportunity to travel to Canada to acquire experiences and skills to allow each to better succeed in their upcoming university science studies.
The Scholarship Programme is entitled “From Bench to Bedside” and follows Science from the genesis of an idea, to research, development, testing, clinical and human trials and ethical issues all the way to its introduction at the bedside.
The Scholarship Participant spends no less than two weeks in the programme in a number of southern Ontario based participating institutions and organizations, including the Ontario Science Centre. Prof. Dr. Patrick Gunning’s University of Toronto cancer research facilities provides the “Bench” while with Prof. Dr. Hazel Markwell they will be immersed in healthcare related issues and facilities – “the Bedside”.
Through these activities and opportunities, the Participant will enhance his/her science knowledge and skill and will have numerous opportunities for multi-disciplinary networking, continuing education, and access to a wide range of science expertise in a variety of related settings.

How to apply
One nomination will be accepted from each school. The nomination with the completed application, the applicant’s letter of interest and the school’s letter for support must be e-mailed to bairdcdnscience@bairdofbute.co.uk no later than February 28, 2019. Any enquiries should be directed to the same email address.
