S2 English Close Reading Homework Booklet

S2 pupils have been issued with this booklet for Close Reading homework. The classroom teacher will specify which passages and questions are to be completed for a particular deadline.

The recommended practice will always be to read the passage then all the questions before starting to write. Think carefully about the focus of the question and use the information (reference to particular words, lines, paragraphs or the number of marks available) to answer appropriately.

If you are unsure, please speak to your classroom teacher before the homework deadline.

S2 Youth and Philanthropy Initiative 2019-20

YPI is a leadership activity that all Second Year pupils undertake where they identify social issues that are important to them.  It was launched to Second Year pupils on Tuesday 27 August 2019 with Alistair Cairns from YPI/Wood Foundation.

How Does YPI Work?

  • Through YPI, pupils identify social issues that are important to them through a series of tasks in Religious Education and Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE).
  • Pupils then carry out research into charities that look to tackle the issue that they have identified.
  • Pupils select a charity who have made an impact in the local community for their chosen issue
  • Pupils are responsible to contact the charities to develop their understanding of what the charity do and how they could use the money – this is support by Pastoral Support Teacher and YPI Mentors
  • Each team prepares a presentation that they deliver to their alpha class. A panel of judges decide who will go on from each alpha class to compete at the final – Wednesday 11 March 2020. 
  • Final event panel includes S6 head team, teachers, local council members, parents and YPI representative.

What is the Impact of YPI?

  • For pupils, YPI is an invaluable experience
  • Whether or not pupils progress onto the finals, all teams are developing leadership, communication, teamwork and confidence – whilst also making a lasting connection with a local community issue
  • Many pupils continue to volunteer or fundraise for their chosen charity after completing YPI
  • Promotes Gospel values, kindness, character, alms giving and helping others less fortunate.
