S5 pupils: Sutton Trust Summer Schools, 5th – 10th July

In Partnership with the Sutton Trust, University of Glasgow offers a week-long residential summer school aimed at high school students in their penultimate year of study. Successful applicants from around the UK will attend lectures and seminars, take part in stimulating activities around campus, and explore the city of Glasgow with their fellow scholars. Students will be introduced to the variety of academic areas that can be studied at university in Scotland.  Additionally, all students complete an online Academic Skills module designed to prepare for the transition to Higher Education.  Completion of this module will be taken into consideration upon application to the university and can form part of an adjusted offer of entry. You will require a reference from your Pastoral teacher (deadline 6th March).  You must inform them and provide at least 1 week’s notice.

Engineering the Future for Girls – Monday 8 – Friday 12 June 2020

Strathclyde University is offering a 1-week Summer School for S3 girls (entering S4 in June). Engineering the Future for Girls is being delivered in collaboration with BP and BAM Nuttall and is designed to engage girls in a wide range of engineering challenges that will inspire them to become the next generation of engineers. The summer school is fully-funded by BP and BAM Nuttall and all student costs, including a contribution towards travel, will be covered. Strathclyde will accept applications from girls with any range of subject choices at National 5. The summer school is non-residential and therefore pupils should be able to make their way each day to the Strathclyde University Campus in the heart of Glasgow City Centre. For the pupils’ convenience, we have arranged for Mentors to accompany pupils from and to Queen Street train station, Glasgow Central train station and Buchanan Bus Station at the start and end of each day.  Pupils should apply using the online application form available on our website: www.strath.ac.uk/engineering/outreach/engineeringthefutureforgirls  The deadline for applications is Monday 25 November 2019 and pupils will be sent a confirmation email upon receipt of their application. Year in Industry (YINI) – 1-year paid placements in Scotland for S5/S6 students

Year in Industry (YINI) have placements in architecture, engineering, mainly electrical and mechanical, business, finance/accountancy in multiple roles in Scotland http://www.etrust.org.uk/year-industry/vacancies/vacancies—scotland and many more UK wide. *Registrations to YINI close on 31st May 2019. The Year in Industry (YINI) placements offer students the opportunity to gain professional development by working at a reputable company. They help place students in top UK companies and organisations every year, including, Rolls-Royce, EDF Energy, Scotrail, ScottishPower, Leonardo, Schneider, Syngenta, P&G plus many more. Typically, the programme lasts for 12 months and comes with a good salary.  Pupils don’t have to have filled in a UCAS application to join either but they do need to be sitting their Highers/Advanced Highers or equivalent.  Some pupils stay on with the companies and take up their advanced apprenticeships.  A number of students are sponsored through university each year and many of our partner companies see The Year in Industry as an important part of their graduate/employee recruitment programme. On behalf of Glasgow’s regional colleges; Glasgow Kelvin College will be hosting an event at The Glasgow Film Theatre during Scottish Apprenticeship Week. “Skills for the Future – The Importance of Apprenticeships” The focus of this event is to raise the awareness of Foundation Apprenticeships (FAs) and the journey of our students through their  FA. Following on from the national campaign by Skills Development Scotland, we welcome along any employer, parent, school teacher or pupil who wants to know more about Foundation Apprenticeships. The event will give key information and a guide to Foundation Apprenticeships. The Lawscot Foundation Bursary

The Lawscot Foundation – invitation for prospective law students to apply for an annual bursary and mentoring support. The Lawscot Foundation (a Scottish charity) would like to invite pupils to apply for a bursary and mentoring if they are: • considering studying law (the LLB) in Scotland, commencing in autumn 2019 • are facing significant financial barriers They aim to support at least eight students in 2019 by providing them with a bursary package of £2,500 per year during their studies, and a solicitor mentor to assist with careers advice. The closing date for applications is 24 May 2019. This will provide students with the opportunity to complete a 1 week placement at one of our Vodafone offices in an area of their choice. Vodafone Training Programme: Code Like A Girl

WANTED: Volunteer Trainers for Vodafone #CodeLikeAGirl programme This summer, Vodafone UK will be running an extensive global training programme for GIRLS aged 14-18, to help them engage with the technology industry and encourage them to consider technology as a career path in the future. The programme will be run throughout the 27 countries that Vodafone operates across, and as part of the programme each country will host a 4 day coding course for girls. We are looking for Vodafone colleagues with web coding experience to support the programme as volunteer trainers for the course. You don’t need to be a software developer/working in a tech team, or have taught before, but you will need to have written web code or created websites before and, of course, enjoy helping others learn.
