P6 & P7 Burns Lunch

This week we celebrated our favourite Scottish Poet, Robert Burns! On Thursday we came together with primary 7 to host a Burns supper where the families were invited to come along and be entertained with lots traditional songs, poems, dancing and of course, haggis tasting.

We thoroughly enjoyed dancing the Dashing White Sargent, performing the Address Tae a Haggis and singing Auld Lang Syne to end the Celebrations. Have a look on our Twitter to see videos and pictures of our performances.

Thank you to all the families that came to celebrate with us and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

Our new topic: The Victorians

This week pupils have began their new Social Studies topic, ‘The Victorians’ which everyone is very excited about starting. Pupils were given the opportunity to explain what they already know about this topic and more importantly, what they would specifically like to find out about this era.

The class are very interested in finding out what life was like for children their age during this time, so over the next few weeks we will carry out research to find out what life was like for Victorian children which will then allow pupils to compare it to  their own lives. Everyone is looking forward to developing their knowledge of this era and visiting Scotland Street in a few weeks to  become Victorian Pupils!

Chanukah Enterprise

This week we have been taking part in a Chanukah Enterprise with P5 and P7. Each class made something related to Chanukah  which was sold for charity. We all came up with a company name, catchphrase and prices and create a poster to advertise our product.

We developed the company ‘Chanukah heroes’ and made beautiful Chanukah cards to sell. They were really popular and we also enjoyed buying the dreidel packs and the Chanukiahs which were made by P5 and P7. It was a great experience to develop a company and product as well as be the sellers and  buyers.  We all managed to make £123.85 for Camp Simcha-well done everyone!

Scottish Parliament Visit

This week P6 have rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into Politics. We had a visit from the Scottish Parliament’s Education Department who ran a workshop for us and St. Clare’s P6.

They gave us lots of information about the Parliament and why politics is so important. We then got to answer questions on our interactive keypads and at the end we found out that Hadi got the most questions correct in the quickest time, well done Hadi!

We then got to create our own political parties and came up with our manifesto which we presented to the class. After, the party leaders gave their speech we all voted on the ballot paper for our favourite party. The votes were counted and the winner announced.

Everyone had a really enjoyable day, learning more about politics and also developing our group work and presentation skills. Who knows, one of us may be a future First Minister!

MSP question and answer session

Hello and welcome back after a  long October break!

We have had a fun and interesting week in primary 6. Let’s start by telling you about our special visitor today…Mr Tompkins, an MSP (and Leo’s dad!) who came to speak to us and P6 St. Clare’s about his job and politics. We have been learning about the Scottish Parliament in Social Sciences and today we got the opportunity to tell Mr Tomkins about what we have learnt so far and also ask him lots of questions. We all really enjoyed learning more about what an MSP does and why it’s important that we get involved with politics. We really appreciate Mr Tompkins taking time to talk to us and help us learn more about the Scottish Parliament.

We also took part the the Shabbat UK Challah Bake as a school yesterday which was great fun. We platted our Challah, sung songs and danced with the Rabbis. It was also a chance for us to reflect and make our Shabbat pledges which we read out at Kabbalat Shabbat.

Maths Week Scotland

This week it is Maths Week in Scotland so we have been busy doing lots of different activities all to do with maths. We started the week by learning how we use maths is in our everyday lives and discussed all the jobs you need maths for…there were a lot like teacher, doctor, architect, engineer and even a rocket scientist!

We played lots of different games during the week like fractions loop cards, multiplication bingo and whole class mental maths competition games to improve our mental maths in a fun and active way. We also used technology to improve our maths skills by doing interactive games and activities on Education city.

Today the multipliers group were the teachers and they taught us how to find the perimeter and area of a shape. Then we all went outside with meter sticks, tape measures and Trundle wheels and had to find the perimeter and area of different objects in the playground. It was really fun to do outdoor learning and especially because it wasn’t raining, for once!

We really enjoyed maths week and practicing maths in lots of different ways.

p6 Diversity week

This week we have been learning about the meaning of diversity and why it is so important to embrace and accept diversity in our society. We worked with St Clare’s to discuss what diversity looks like and discovered that there are lots of ways we are different and that’s what makes us unique and interesting!

On Thursday it was Diversity Day so we went with St Clare’s to The Foundry at Barrhead to learn more about diversity. There were lots of different stalls where you could learn about many religions like Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Catholicism and Judaism. We got to try on Saris, Turbans and play different instruments from all the different religions. It was so interesting and fun! Then we got to learn some dancing, not your typical dancing though, it was Bollywood dancing from India. After that we played some team sports with other schools and finally we had to decorate our own mug with all the different religious symbols that we had learnt about that day. Unfortunately, the rain was so heavy on the way back to the bus our mugs got soaked and it rubbed all our art work off but we still enjoyed making our mugs.

We loved Diversity Day and learning about all the different religions. We even helped at the Judaism stall to explain some things to other schools about Judaism and blew the shofar for them. It was a great day!

Welcome to the first blog of P6

Hi everyone and welcome to our first blog of P6!

We have only been back to school for two weeks and we are really enjoying the new school and absolutely loving all of the new facilities. We have especially been enjoying our new classroom, the shared learning space, P.E facilities, the library and reading pods.

Over the last two weeks we have been creating our class charter which focuses on the UN Rights of the Child. As well as our rights we came up with responsibilities that we should follow so we are showing care and respect towards everyone and in everything we do. We have also been really enjoying getting back into our Numeracy, Literacy, Ivrit, Kodesh lessons and starting our class novel ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar.

We hope you enjoyed the meet the teacher afternoon and seeing the new school.

Forest School

On Mondays from now on we are going to be doing Forest Schools.   During  Forest Schools we learn about nature and exploring  everything . We are doing this because we are learning about John Muir and taking part in the Discovery Award . We like making things in Forest Schools and doing activities like climbing trees. When we are there we find animals like worms, spiders and dead snails or live snails.

Photographs will follow.
