How You Can Support Your Child at Home

Literacy

“The more that you read, the more things you will know.
The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Dr Zeuss

There are lots of ways you can support your child in becoming a confident reader. From singing nursery rhymes and reading bedtime stories, discussing different things you have read such as newspapers, magazines or  books, sharing thoughts and opinions on a variety of topics, to even reading labels in the supermarket together. Experiences like these will enable your child to feel more confident with words.

Please encourage your child write for real purposes at home such as birthday cards or shopping lists. But remember, not all writing needs to be done with pencil and paper! Why not try chalk on the ground,  alphabet pasta or letters cut from magazines? For further information or activities, click here.

With your support, these experiences will enable your child to see the value in learning to read and write and explore literacy in the wider world.

The information booklets below provide additional information and tips on how you can help develop your child’s reading at Early, First and Second level.
