Week beginning 29.4.24

What a week! Let us have a look at what we have been up to.

Science at Eastwood

On Monday and Thursday we had the chance to go to Eastwood and were taught science by the science teachers. We learned about batteries and how they work. This was fun as we got to do an experiment and then learn some of the scientific terminology which we will look at in S1.

School Show practice

Rehearsals are now in full swing and we have been practicing our scenes as well as our songs!

Spreadsheets and graphs

The pentagons have been learning about data and how to input it into spreadsheets. We had a go at creating our own and made bar graphs to go along with it. We experimented with colours and fonts for our graphs too.

Colour Run

We ended the week with the much awaited colour run!

Week beginning 22.4.24

What a week! We finally received our leavers hoodies, and have been wearing them all week! The sun has been shining and we have been making the most of the lovely weather. Here is a little snippet of our week:

New Reading books

We were given new reading books which are biographies or autobiographies and started reading them in our reading circles. We each take a role and read parts of the book then check our understanding.

Animal Me – job/career matching

On Tuesday, we completed an interesting online questionnaire about our personalities. At the end this matched us up with an animal and gave us idea and suggestions for the jobs that would suit our personalities. It was very interesting as most of these were accurate. We had a range of different animals in the class from bears, seahorses, koalas and dolphins.

Sunny days

We have made use of the good weather and taken our P.E. outdoors. We have been focussing on racket sports and been playing rounders. It was our woodland week this week and we enjoyed being outside and taking in the nature around us.

School show

We had a chance to read through the script, Shakespeare Rocks, for our school show and listened to the songs. We now have our roles and are excited to start practising!

Culture Week and Eid celebration

What a great week it has been celebrating Eid and different cultures!

Cooking with Mrs Nasar

Our highlight this week have been working with Mrs Nasar to make some delicious pakoras! We used our chopping skills to slice potatoes, onions and chillies. We then added coriander and spinach along with the important herbs and spices. Mrs Nasar fried the pakoras for us and then we had the chance to indulge in the delicious snack.

Islamic Art

We explored different Islamic art and how geometric shapes are used. We then followed a tricky tutorial to create our own using compasses and protractors. This took a lot of resilience and perseverance but the end result was so good!

Cultural clothing

We then ended the week by wearing our traditional clothing. It was lovely to see all the cultures in Crookfur come together and celebrate.

Week beginning 25.3.24

Week before Easter holidays and what a busy week it has been!

We handed in our last homework ever in primary school! Then we wrote a balanced argument about whether homework should be banned. For science we planned a presentation to persuade people to use cleaner energy. A lot of persuasive writing.

We had the opportunity to go an see the P3 Willy Wonka showcase, which was out of this world!

We ended the week with break the rules day and came in wearing our choice of outfits.

We hope you all have a wonderful spring break!

Week beginning 18.3.24

We have had another amazing week. Our Neurodiversity ambassadors have been busy all week and deserve a big well done:

Aritri, Jamie, Sophie and Jack.

Neurodiversity week

The ambassadors came in and delivered a presentation about neurodiversity. We then took part in an art competition which ends next Tuesday.

Persuasive writing

We wrote our first persuasive text about the topic of AI and digital technology. We learned about the rule of 3, emotive language and rhetorical questions.

Fractions

Some of us are learning how to convert between improper fractions and mixed fractions. Next we will look at how to add fractions.

Black Lives Matter

We looked at the Black Lives Matter movement and did some research before adding it to a Padlet.

Week beginning 11.3.24

Another busy week. It was STEM week this week and we have been doing so much! Here is a little snippet of the week.

Easter Code

We went to the church on Monday to take part in Easter Code. Here we listened to the Easter story, took part in quizzes and challenges and even got a snack in between! This was fun.

Rotary Quiz

Myra, Luke and Hishaam took part in the rotary quiz this week against other schools in East Renfrewshire. Their team scored 105 points out of a possible 120 which was amazing! This quiz was held in Netherlee Primary school after school hours. Mrs Rasul and Mrs Allan met the teams there and were there to cheer them on.

Lord Provost Debate

On Thursday, 3 of the Primary 7s (Ethan 7A, Nicole 7B and David 7C) went to the lord provost debate. They were up against Kirkhill Primary, and were presenting arguments for the motion ‘Digital technology and AI are making our lives better.’ The rest of the us had the opportunity to watch and participate in the debate live as it was happening. Quality Improvement Officer, David Gordan, and the Lord Provost Montague, were both very impressed by the children. The feedback included that the children did themselves and the school proud. Provost Montague was highly impressed with how articulate and thoughtful our pupils were. They have been working on this for the last 2 weeks and we are all very proud of them!

STEM week

This week has been STEM week and we have been different things for it. With Mr Wilson we made windmills using recycled materials. With Mrs Rasul we learned about Pi on Thursday because it was world Pi day. We created Pi bracelets and Pi skylines.

Problem Solving

Mrs Slorach and Mrs Doig were invited into our class to watch us doing problem solving. We started this off with a maths relay race which was fun!

Week beginning 4.3.2024

Another busy week but we have been doing lots of amazing things!

World Book Week

For World Book Week we finally finished our storybooks and had a chance to read them to p2C.  Everyone that has seen them have been so impressed. As well as writing and illustrating the books, we used iPads and iMovie to record videos of us telling our stories. We then created QR codes to attach to the back of our books so that people can scan them and watch or listen to the story being read.

As well as this we created digital front covers of the books using Canva. The process may have been long but the outcome is absolutely brilliant! We have attached some of the links for you to watch.

Manha and Sophia worked hard on writing a dual language book. Their story: Two Pandas and a Duck, was written in English, Urdu AND Cantonese! How impressive is that?

Debating

This week we took part in some debating. We discussed the motion ‘A school day should be less than 6 hours’ and split the class into for and against then presented our arguments. We will continue debating next week and will focus on different topics.

Maths

We have been learning how to draw angles using protractors. This was quite tricky to begin with but with some practice we got there in the end. We have also been working on word problems and different ways to work them out.

Week beginning 26.2.24

This week we have had parents evenings and want to first say a thanks to all of our helpers for those evenings. As well as that, it has been a super busy week in the classroom! Here are a few things we got up to:

Storybooks

For world book day next week, we are creating our own storybooks to read to the Primary 2s. We have been doing lots of work on them this week and they are coming together nicely.  Mrs Rasul is looking forward to seeing the end result and thinks the next Julia Donaldson or Michael Rosen could come from this class.

Martin Luther King Jr.

This week we have been learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and exploring language from his famous speech ‘I have a dream’. First we did a comprehension about him, then we watched his speech and read some extracts before moving on to creating some art linked to the speech. Some of the key vocabulary and powerful lines we selected include:

  • Let Freedom Rain
  • We cannot walk alone
  • One day this nation will rise up
  • Sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

Eastwood P.E.

The Eastwood P.E. sessions have started again and this week we were split into 2 groups and had the chance to choose which activity we wanted to be a part of. The options were netball and football. We did mini tournaments and this will continue each week.

Problem Solving

For maths we have been working on the strategy of guess, check and improve and had to figure out the missing boxes in a 3 x 3 multiplication grid. At first this was a little tricky but with some perseverance we managed to get to the solution!

Week beginning 19.02.24

What a week of learning it has been! Here is what we got up to this week:

Maths – Reading timetables and creating our own

For maths we have been learning how to read a timetable like a bus or train timetable and calculate durations. We were then given the task of planning a trip to the cinema in Renfrew Street from Newton Mearns by taking public transport. We were given a budget of £25 each to spend and had to plan what time to leave, which train to take and which movie to watch. This involved planning around timings. It was fun!

Civil Rights Movement

For IDL, we started learning about the civil rights movements. We looked at some of the laws that shocked us and looked at pictures that showed inequality between white and coloured people. It made us sad, angry and we were just very shocked. Then we created a diamond 9 for the laws and rules which we thought were the most severe, to the least severe. Every group had different opinions.

Science

With Mr Wilson, we looked at senses and we created an invention for our chosen sense.

Athletics and Bleep test

For P.E. we have been doing athletics and weekly bleep test. All of us have bet our initial scores and are doing really well.

Creating a story book

We started a storyboard for our books. Next week we are going to write our story before we assemble it into a book.

Week beginning 5.2.24

What a lovely week we have had with parents/adults visiting our classroom. We had the chance to share our learning and allowed them to take part too! Here is a little snippet of other things we have done this week.

Mr Wilson Science

With Mr Wilson we had a go at smelling different spices. This was fun!

Internet Safety Day

Jack and Myra delivered a lesson to the class about being safe online. We had some interesting conversations about what you should and shouldn’t do while online and spoke about cyber bullying.

Mental health week

For mental health week we discussed some questions about pupil voice and the choices we have. We did this is a discussion carousel which was interesting.

Suffrage around the world

As part of the open day we had to guess when different countries were given full suffrage. This was interesting as there was a few that surprised us. We then filled in our maps with labelled countries and year of full suffrage.
