Book Week Scotland 2021!

Welcome back to our blog! This week our focus has been on Book Week. Come and have a  look at some of our amazing pictures of learning!

As you can tell, we were filled with excitement whilst receiving our Read, Write and Count bags.

We were learning about predictions using the three books from book week. After we read the stories, we had to confirm or reject our predictions.

‘A prediction is a sensible guess on what the book is going to be about.’ – Scarlett

‘To make a prediction, we explore the front cover and title.’ – Jace

Using the Growth Mindset book called ‘My Magic Breath’, we learnt about mindful breathing.

‘When you are stressed and worried we have learnt to take a deep breath through our mouth and nose to release tension.’ – London

We created paintings with our face on it to show that we will try to do magic breathing!’ – Fara

Another book we explored was ‘There is no Dragon in this Story’. After reading the story, we were provided with a STEM challenge. We have displayed that TEAM WORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK!

We had to make a house that was stable for the three little pigs. Once it was made, we had to make sure that it could not be blown away.’ – Hasan

‘Our building needed a good structure to make sure that it did not fall. We used limited resources to make our buildings. We had paper, lollipop sticks and straw.’ – Kerr and London

Blether stations!

At out blether stations, we had to work in teams to up-level simple sentences. To up-level the sentences we used adjectives!’ – Aria

‘I used nouns and adverbs to up-level my sentences.’ – Gurleen

We love creating Helicopter Stories using our imagination. The best part is when we get to retell our story with our peers using our voice, tone and a variety of actions.

‘We are acting out different characters from stories.’ – Max B.

We have been learning about adverbs and we created our own trees to describe how the apples are falling.

‘An adverb is describing how something happens. For example apples are falling slowly or quickly.’ – Emelia

To continue up-levelling our stories and sentences we have learnt about Onomatopoeia!

‘Onomatopoeia is words to describe a sound such as Boom, Bang, Pop and Splash!’ – Max M. and London

This week has been a fantastic week of learning. Everyone has worked extremely hard and has shown me their best listening skills. Everyone has tried to be the best that they can be! Let’s continue working super hard Primary 3a!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Love Mrs Amin ☺️ xxx

Growth Mindset, PE, Stone Age Decoding and Poems!

We have been working hard to learn strategies on how to strengthen our mindset from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset!

Growth Mindset is the way we think about things and this encourages us to believe in ourselves, to have an ‘I can do it’ attitude’. Growth Mindset reminds us that we don’t have to be perfect at everything . We are learning that mistakes are part of journey and that they are okay to make!  🙂

We created Growth Mindset posters! On our brain, half of the brain was a fixed mindset and the other was a growth mindset. Fixed mindset is where we give up or get frustrated when we cannot do things!

To help us with our learning, we will be continuing to enforce a growth mindset throughout everything we do!

In Maths, we have been continuing to learn about Place Value. This is where we split two digit numbers into tens and units!

Using this knowledge, we have been learning how to complete vertical calculations!

We have reached the end of our Stone Age topic! We have answered all of our questions and have enjoyed learning new facts about the prehistoric time!

As part of our final lesson, we explored Stone Age symbols. We then had to use a key to translate the Stone Age symbols into English!

Using our knowledge of the Stone Age we created an Acrostic Poem!

Throughout Literacy, we have been working on our comprehension skills. This week we have focused on finding information!

We use magnetic letters to help consolidate our spelling sound and to practise our spelling words.

Mrs Loban took us out for PE and we had an amazing time! We are continuing to work on our gross motor skills.

As it is Bonfire night, we learnt about how Bonfire night came to existence! Thereafter, we had an important discussion about the safety regarding fireworks.

During our Art lesson, we were focusing on line and texture using chalk to create our own fireworks!

This week has been an eventful week, especially with Break the Rules day! It has been amazing and we have enjoyed every minute of it. I cannot wait to speak to you in depth about all the amazing learning that takes place during Parent’s Night next week.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Amin☺️

Our Stone Age Houses, Music and Problem Solving!

We have been extremely busy bees this week!

We have been using our voices to discover and explore the rhythm and pitch in Music. We are beginning to move , tap and pass a variety of objects to keep to a beat.

In Numeracy, we have been learning how to solve vertical calculations using our knowledge of tens and units.

‘We have learnt how to write a calculation correctly. We need to make sure the tens and units are underneath one another. ‘ – Hasan

In the tuff spot, we are using the pom pom balls to add and subtract numbers.’ – Oscar

We were using a calculator to solve our partners secret number. We had to add and subtract!.’ – Max B.

Me and London used our calculator and sometimes the number went quite high. Some numbers were over a thousand.’ – Harrison

We have been doing problem solving questions.’ – Fara

We have been solving mathematical problems. We have been recognising odd and even numbers and have been adding three or four large numbers mentally.

In Writing, we have been learning about Acrostic poems. This week our focus was on Autumn. We had to make sure we used adjectives to up level our sentences. We have been exploring Alliteration and are beginning to use alliteration to enhance the information with our descriptions.

‘An acrostic poem is when you have a word and each line begins with one letter from the word. Our word was Autumn.’ – Gurleen

‘In Autumn, my first sentence began with A and then the second sentence began with U.’ – Jace

We are reaching towards the end of our Stone Age topic. We had the opportunity to present our own Stone Age houses to our class! Have a look at our masterpieces! We have linked all our previous learning to create our houses.

‘We put all our effort in to make a real life Stone Age house!’ – Adam

‘We only used natural resources to make our Stone Age houses such as leaves, sticks and cardboard.’ – Scarlett

‘We made characters, fire pits, cave paintings and weapons!.’ – Lilian

As always, you have worked extremely hard! It is Halloween this week so please make sure you are safe!

Have a wonderful weekend superstars!

Place Value, Proper Nouns, Imaginative Writing and the FLINTSTONES!

Welcome back to our Blog! After the October break, we are ready to engage in our learning more than ever!

In Maths, we have been exploring Place Value!

‘I have learnt about tens and units.’ – London

‘Tens are  rods that are made up of 10 units.’ – Kerr

‘Units are ones.’ – Stuart

‘I can use concrete materials to make two digit numbers and I can identify which number is a ten and unit.’ – Hasan

During our mental maths starters, we have been working hard with our number talks. Number talks is where we simply have a conversation about the strategy we have used to reach our answer. All of us may have different strategies and that is great! However, it is important that we discuss this and lay out our working.

We have learnt the hand signals for number talks! Please ask us about it and we can show at home!

We have been learning how to round numbers to the nearest ten! This is enabling us to estimate the answers to addition and subtraction calculations.

I am adding up my totals together and rounding it to the nearest ten.’ – Luca R.

In Literacy we have been learning about Proper Nouns!

‘A proper noun is a specific thing such as a name. Pencil is a common noun but if I said pink pencil it is a proper noun because it is specific.’ – Lilian

‘Proper nouns are not generic things such as supermarkets. However, Home Bargains or Waitrose is a proper noun.’ – Harrison

‘Proper Nouns almost every time begins with a capital letter.’ – London

We used library books to find proper nouns and common nouns.’ – Gurleen

In Writing, we have began self-assessing our work as we are now confident at identifying the success criteria. We give ourselves two stars and a wish and try to improve on our work every week!

We are almost at the end of our Stone Age topic! We discussed the timeline of the Stone Age and we were discussing the chronological events which occurred throughout the Stone Age!

After, we used our Artistic skills to draw Fred the Flintstones as we learnt that he lived in the Stone Age!

The boys and girls insisted that their adults at home did not believe they drew him because of how amazing their work was! These pictures will show you just how outstanding they were and how they drew Fred from the beginning! We are AMAZING ARTISTS!

We have also explored different foods that were consumed within the Stone Age. We used our imagination to create our own recipes!

Wow! What another fantastic week of learning. Well done superstars! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Come and read about our Amazing Learning!

We have another amazing blog to showcase our learning for the week! We have been working extremely hard to learn about Adjectives and Common Nouns.

‘An adjective is a describing word such as slow, big and small.’ – Adam

‘A common noun is a place, thing, name or idea.’ – Lilian

We have completed a variety of activities to practise recognising and differentiating between Adjectives and Nouns.

We worked in pairs to describe a variety of images and had to use AMAZING ADJECTIVES!

Whilst we complete dictation, we identified the different Adjectives within the sentences.

‘We went on a Nouns hunt across our classroom and we found lots of Nouns like toilet, cloakroom, plant and tables.’ – Kerr

In PE, we have been developing our skills and techniques to improve our level of performance and fitness. We have been recognising our own and peers progress by discussing our thoughts and feelings. We have also been giving and accepting feedback from our peers!

During our Stone Age topic, we have been working in teams to create our own Stone Age Houses!

Thank you so much to everyone for bringing in cardboard to allow us to do this ☺️.

This week has been incredibly fun and exciting. We cannot wait to continue learning after our holidays. Everyone works so hard and always tries their best!

Have an amazing and well deserved holiday Primary 3a! Have fun and be safe!

Lots of love,

Mrs Amin ☺️ xxx

Maths Week Scotland 2021!

We have been celebrating Maths Week Scotland! Throughout the week, we have engaged in a variety of activities to capture the purpose of maths within our daily lives, practised our skills across different concepts (money, time and fractions) and enjoyed problem solving challenges!

We were discussing the purpose of Maths concepts such as time and money. We were shocked and amazed at how Maths is included in everything we do on a daily basis.

Whilst exploring outdoors, we made Venn Diagrams to compare and contrast objects of our own choice!

‘A venn diagram is where we compare different things or objects.’ – Kerr

‘We compared hard/green items, hard/soft, squishy/orange and pointy/green.’ – London, Oscar, Gurleen and Lilian

‘The middle part of the Venn Diagram shows that an object is the same as both sides. It is called an intersection.’ – Yahya

The rain was pouring down towards the end of Woodland. Therefore, we ended it with some hot drinks and a biscuit!

We learnt about Rangoli Patterns!

‘A Rangoli pattern is a pattern which is symmetrical. It is commonly from Hindu religion and is colourful.’ – Fara

‘In Rangoli patterns there is symmetry, colours and the colours are all very bright. They are beautiful.’ – Harrison

We explored flags from around the world. We identified the different shapes within the flags too!

‘Some flags were symmetrical and some were not. Every flag has different shapes.’ – Hasan

‘Triangles, sqaures, rectangles, stars were in some flags. These are 2D shapes.’ – Luca

During the week, we have also had the opportunity to play the Sumdog Maths contest!

Everyone has returned from the holidays ready to work extremely hard. You have had a brilliant week! See you on Monday superstars!

Cave Paintings, Fractions and Adjectives!

Welcome to another week of amazing learning in Primary 3a! It has been an extremely busy week. We have enjoyed using our imagination across all curricular areas!

Numeracy and Mathematics

We have continued working very hard learning about fractions. We can now identify half and quarter of a shape and have also been learning how to split a line into halves and quarter. We have been using a fraction wall to help support our understanding of which fraction is bigger!

‘The bottom number tells us how many equal parts there are. The smaller the number, the bigger the equal part.’ – Fara

‘We made a Fraction Man. We split the paper into a whole, quarter and halves.’ – Hasan

‘I only used one piece of paper to create my whole, half and quarter. As I cut each fraction part, the piece of paper got smaller.’ – Harrison

During our Mental Maths starters, we have been practising our Subitising skills. We are continuing to develop our ability to instantaneously recognise the number of objects in a small group without the need to count them individually.

We play loop cards to enhance our mental maths when solving calculations.

Literacy

This week we have been completing Kung Fu Punctuation! This is an active approach to help us learn about capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, commas and question/exclamation marks.

We worked in teams to solve Mrs Amin sentences. She was extremely tired and forgot the punctuation within her story! Oops Mrs Amin!

We have been learning about adjectives! We were finding adjectives within our reading book. Adjectives will allow us to make our writing ideas and stories more interesting and captivating. It will also provide the reader with more information about our characters and setting.

‘An adjective is a describing word. An adjective describes a noun.’ – Gurleen

‘A noun is a word which is a place, thing or person. An adjective describes a noun.’ – Scarlett

The Stone Age – Cave Paintings

Cave paintings are a type of art, found on the wall or ceilings of caves. They originate from the Stone Age! We explored a variety of Paintings from the Stone Age which sparked interesting conversations. We learnt new vocabulary and had the opportunity to discuss our feelings and thoughts related to each painting.

We captured the ethos of the people who lived in the Stone Age and created our own Cave Paintings! We were only allowed to use materials that were existent in the Stone Age. Although this was challenging, we used our problem solving skills and imagination to create our paintings!

We mushed berries to create paints and different colours.’ – Oscar

‘We used sticks to paint as that is what was used in the Stone Age.’ – Charlotte

‘We used our nature skills to create paintings using outdoor materials. ‘ – Kerr

Although it was a short week, it was an incredibly busy week for sure! Well done for working extremely hard throughout Term 1 boys and girls. You have all settled amazingly in to class and have been such a joy to teach. I hope you all have a lovely long weekend. Enjoy!

Love Mrs Amin xxx

The Stone Age, Outdoor Learning and Fractions!

This week, we have been learning about the Stone Age. We chose this topic ourselves after exploring the experiences and outcomes related to Social Studies.

We explored the Stone Age during our Outdoor Learning experiences. We learnt about the different types of houses within the Stone Age and compared & contrasted it to how our houses are made.

‘We were making our own Stone Age houses. We had to use natural resources/materials such as wood and mud to build because that is what the people in the Stone Age had.’ – Aria

‘I couldn’t use this for our house because it was plastic. Plastic never existed in the Stone Age.’ – Jamie

‘We built a cave. Although in the Stone Age they did not have plastic, we used it for the outside of the cave.’ – Scarlett

‘We tried to built a Stone Age house like our own houses but only using outdoor materials. We used Tyres for the doors, wood planks to support the structure and windows.’ – Lilian

‘We created a footpath using stones/pebbles for the front of the house.’ – Jessica

‘For the bell, we used a metal pot so we can hear our guests coming.’ – Charlotte

‘Our house was built with  sticks, leaves, tyres and wood. We found grass and mud and used this as a camouflage so people couldn’t find us or attack us! – Jace

‘We had to find food to survive in the wild. We found blueberries and beetroot.’ – London

In Literacy, we are working hard on our letter formation, grammar and punctuation to ensure we are forming our sentences correctly.  We have also been learning about WOW words to enhance our vocabulary.

‘Our spelling sound for the week was a-e. I have grown my words for example save became saved, saving and life-saver. I made sentences with these words too!’. – Fara

We are becoming more confident in recognising the different ways you can make the ‘ai’ sound.

To demonstrate our understanding of our reading book, we had to sort out sentences into true or false headings.

‘We read a tricky unseen text and highlighted all the WOW words or words we never heard of. We then had to write the ending of the story using our imagination.’ – Hasan

Here are some WOW words that we explored in our Library books!

‘I am practising to write common words correctly.’ – Charlie

‘I used WOW words to describe this pictures! My words were amazing, adventurous, freezing and wonderful.’ – Max

We have been learning about fractions. We are able to show an understanding of how a single item can be shared equally. We have also learnt the notation of a half and quarter! We are beginning to learn about where fractions lie on a number line.

We have also been learning about Symmetry.

‘We have made a line of symmetry. Using squared paper, we had to create symmetrical pictures. We used our imagination to create our own designs.’ – Harrison

Our Monster Stories and Music!

We have had another wonderful week in Primary 3!

In Music, we have been learning how to keep the beat in songs.

‘I can keep the beat to songs by clapping.’ – Harrison

We have learnt new songs. We clapped, bounced a ball and tapped our feet to keep in time with the beat.’ – Charlotte, Lilian and Oscar.

In Literacy, we have began Wrap around spelling! Our sound of the week was ‘ai’.

‘ Our spelling list has four words. We blend and stretch the words out like this… rain, r-ai-n.. In Wrap around spelling we have to grow the word too! For example, rain becomes raining. It can also become rains or rained.’ – Hasan

‘We created sentences with the ai words but had to spell the word correctly.’ – Lilian

‘I was able to find all the ai words in a tricky word search.’ – Jace

We use magnetic letters to help us with our blending!

Beat the timer!

‘As we practise our common words, we have to beat the timer by writing the word correctly as many times as we can.’ – Aria

In our library, we love to read chapter books or non-fiction books to read for enjoyment.

We are all Star Writers!

We used our imagination to create the next part of the Monster  story. We described the monster using wow words. As a challenge, we had to use two different types of punctuation such as exclamation marks or question marks!

‘Thank you for reading our blog. Happy weekend!.’ – London

We have had the Best Week of Learning!

This week in Primary 3 we have been super busy exploring all curricular areas!

Literacy

We have been learning how to create an interesting and capturing imaginative story.

‘I recreated my favourite story and changed the beginning, middle and end. My story had a sequence of events.’ – Oscar

‘We learnt about VCOP (vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation). VCOP makes our writing more interesting and detailed.’ – Jace

‘To achieve our success criteria, we had to use capital letters, full stops and clear finger spaces.’ – Max M.

We have been introduced to our Handwriting jotters too! Each week, we will be practising our letter formation to ensure it is neat, on the line and clear.

‘Our letters for the week were c, o, a, d, g, and q. Each letter begins with the formation of c.’ – Lilian

‘During our mathematics, we have been adding two digit numbers. We have been using number talks to solve the calculations. We are learning to add the tens and units together.’ – Scarlett

‘I have been practising to add and subtract near doubles. Near double is when a digit is close to a double. For example, 10 + 9 = 19, which is almost the same as 10 + 10 = 20.’ – Fara

Other Curricular Areas

Our Social Studies concept this term will be the Stone Age. The children selected this period of time after they were provided with the relevant Experiences and Outcomes.

‘In PE, we completed an obstacle course with javelin, long jump, shot putt and hurdles.’ – Adam

‘In Music, we were learning how to keep the beat to different songs and rhymes.’ – Luca R.

‘Bonjour! I can say ‘my name is Emelia’ in French!’. – Emelia

This week has been exceptionally busy exploring all curriulcar areas. We cannot wait for next week!

Just a little reminder, we have uploaded a SWAY about our classroom, which will provide you information of our daily school life!
