Learning in our New P1 Class! (P1b)

Welcome back to our Blog! We have came back from an amazing October week and have settled extremely well into our new class. We can’t wait to show you some of our learning!

We have learnt many new sounds. When we learn a new sound, we practise our letter formation to ensure we can write it correctly.

We are using Q-Tips to form letters, this helps our fine motor skills.

We are super confident in identifying pictures which begin with the same sound and we know that is called Alliteration!

When we were learning the sound ‘o’, we made an Octopus!

Now that we know so many new sounds, we are beginning to blend our sounds together to make words like mat, cat, hat.

Here we were solving the initial sound of a word, the middle and even the last sound! We could make words such as web, sun, log and jug.

This week we have been so lucky to have special visitors! We first met a Policeman who spoke about his job. He even showed us resources he uses when he is patrolling and keeping the community safe.

We also met a French Nursery teacher who works in Cannes. We have been learning French every week and he was very impressed with our skills!

Lastly, we are enjoying learning in our new P1 class and have settled in extremely well!

See you in our blog next week!

P.1a being creative outdoors!

P1a have been having great fun outdoors in the rain and in the sunshine. We are continuing to develop our problem solving together and enjoy learning from each other’s creative, imaginative ideas!

London  “We made an abandoned pirates den and it has a secret passage.”

Kerr   ” The water I’m pouring on is the glue to hold it together.”

Finn- “The pegs on the crates zap electricity when touched.”

Lewis-   “I made a potion for the pirates den”

We talked about hiding behind the den, sleeping on top of the den and  some children pointed out there was no way to go under the den! Lots of good use of positional language while creating a pirate themed story together.

Charlie used the tarpaulin creatively, pushing it up as high as he could making it catch in the wind, to create thunderstorm sounds for our pirates den.

We also used our measuring skills comparing how much water some containers hold and had a go at estimating how many cupfuls each contained.  We discovered which held the most/least water.

We practise our weighing skills too estimating which items are heavier.

In our mud kitchen we also have been creative, creating delicious, mothwatering dishes!

Scarlett-  ”I have made a menu with prices for our cafe.”

Lewis   “It’s called the Chocolate Maker cafe.”

Then lots of us decided we wanted to draw and write a menu for our class cafe. The prices were quite expensive!

Amazing creativity in P1a outdoors!

Primary 1D, The Smeds and The Smoos!

Another fantastic week in P1D.

We have been making great progress learning all of our new sounds and have started to recognise when we can use the sounds to make familiar words.

Some parents have asked where they can access the songs that the children have been learning for each sound. These are available on Vimeo if you search for Jolly Phonics Songs – it might help to explain the actions that the children perform – especially the growling for “R”!

Each new sound is introduced and then followed up with

lots of fun activities.

We have been developing our early writing skills through creating picture stories.

Family and friends usually feature quite heavily in these pictures so look out for yourself when the picture books come home!

We explored the theme of “being different” on Wear it Red Day through reading Elmer the Elephant and creating our own Elmer Designs.

This week we have been reading the new Julia Donaldson book “The Smeds and the Smoos” . The children have loved hearing about Bill and Janet, mimicking the grumpy grandparents,  finding the rhymes in the book, learning about blending colours, searching for the hidden pictures (we’ve spotted Gruffalos and Zog) and creating a Wurpular Wood using different art materials.

Finally, I wanted to share a few pictures of our Outdoor Learning on Wednesday (possibly the wettest day of the year!). We all got dressed in our rain wear and spent a fantastic afternoon down in the cycle area at the front of the school, where the children practiced safely crossing roads, investigated the road signs, followed the road markings and splashed about in the puddles – a lot!

I hope everyone has a great holiday and I can’t wait to hear all the stories once we are back!

Outdoor Adventures in P1C!

In our Outdoor Learning Area, we were investiagting how to use the water pump to squirt the water. We thought the water pump was like a fire hose and we were adding water to  fire hydrant.

We were also working together to make potions. To create our potions we used different ingredients like sticks, stones and leaves.

We also built towers and we were comparing which tower was taller. We used our maths skills to count and compare the number of crates we used.  The taller tower had 2 more crates than the smaller tower.

We also worked together to build a den. The roof kept falling down! So we had to do a bit of problem solving to try and work out how to get it to stay up. We used sticks to hold it up and tyres to stabilise it.

Lastly, as part of our topic for People Who Help Us, we were visited by Cathy our Lollipop Lady and PC McAllister who told us all about their job!

We look forward to sharing more of our learning adventures with you.

P1a’s learning adventures!

We are learning lots about People Who Help us while developing many important skills!

We thought of what we already know about this and came up with questions we’d like to research.

We thought of all the people who help us in our community.  We hid a picture of someone whose job it is to help us from our partner and gave them clues.  They had to try to guess the person’s job from our clues! We tried not to make the clues too easy!

Gurleen- ‘This person uses cement in their job.”

We drew pictures of different people who help us and used our writing skills to label the pictures.

Gurleen wanted to learn ” How do police officers help us?” We talked about police officers -their uniform, what they need to do their job and how they help us, We know they use helicopters, horses, motorcycles, dogs, cars and vans! We drew pictures of police officers at work adding lots of detail to help tell our story.

London- ”The police are chasing the burglar. A helicopter is in the sky.”

Aria wanted to know, ”How can police dogs help the police? ”

We learned about police dogs but we were also very keen to learn about how dogs help us in other ways.  We watched a text, listening carefully for information, and shared what we had learned with each other. We drew pictures of dogs in their different roles.

We also learned about firefighters.  Kerr asked ”Where do fire engines get water from?” We have been on the lookout for fire hydrants out in the street. Lots have been spotted! We created a collage with tissue of flames burning and talked about the hot colours-red, yellow, orange. We used our fine motor skills to tear the tissue to the right size and to cut out the fire engine  which was coming to the rescue.

We enjoyed creating a town for our small world People who help Us toys.  We designed buildings including a medical centre and fire station. Scarlett drew a train conductor! We worked well together to decide what else was needed.

Lewis-”The builder is building houses”

We had a visit from our lollipop lady! We thought of questions and shared what we knew about road safety.

Well done P1a!

Exploring Maths in Exciting Ways in P1b!

Last week it was Maths Week! We completed many activities throughout different areas. Some were within the classroom, our play areas, outdoors and even within PE!

We were matching number flash cards to the correct Numicon. We are beginning to recognise the number frames of Numicon to make different numbers by adding two together.

We have also been exploring  numbers to 10 and even beyond! We are able to count out objects correctly relating to a large number.

We are measuring rice. We were comparing measurements. Some of us had an empty jug, half or full!

We were able to beat the timer. Our task was to sequence the numbers to 10 within one minute as a team! Miss Amin would hide a number and we had to find the missing number from the sequence. We were able to easily recognise the missing digit.

We are sequencing days of the week and months of the year! We are increasingly becoming better at recognising what day or month comes before or after.

We have been learning about Fractions. We have split our Pizza’s into half and made equal amounts on either side.

Within Outdoor Learning and PE  we have also been exploring Maths. In PE we played the number game. When Miss Amin shouted a number, we had to form a group with that amount of people.

Within our Outdoor Learning Area we were practising our number formation to ensure we are writing numbers the correct way.

Lastly, as part of our topic for People Who Help Us, we were visited by Cathy our amazing Lollipop Lady!

We will be back after the October Week! Have a great holiday week when it comes :)!

P1C’s Adventures

In our topic about ‘People Who Can Help Us’ we were discussing how the dentist helps look after our teeth. We know the dentist use special tools to look after our teeth and we need to brush our teeth two times a day. The dentist checks to see if there is any plaque or bad stuff on our teeth.

“We were scrubbing the teeth clean like the dentist.” Rhys

“We were making sure the plaque was away so we needed to scrub them to make them really shiny.” Sofia

“I’m getting all the plaque off the teeth because plaque makes holes in your teeth.” Ben S

“I’m brushing the tooth so it doesn’t get a filling.” Mia

We have also been discussing how fire engines get their water and today we found a fire hydrant and it was the same shape as a rectangle!

In art this week, we were making collages out of lots of different materials.

“I was making a fish using lots of things.” Daniel

“I was making a snowflake picture and I used glue, a pink love heart and blue sequins.” Willow

We’ve had another amazing week of learning!

Wonderful Woodland Adventures in P1A

P1a had great fun down in the woodland exploring nature, working together, problem solving and making up games. Here are some moments we have captured to share with you……..

Teamwork – We helped each other to move things around and when we got stuck in the mud!

“A magic door.”

“ I will help you with the door.”

“ It goes faster when someone pushes you.”

“Let’s push together.”

Problem solving – We worked out we would need to un- twirl the rope to change direction to  prevent us from hitting the tree.

“We put our apple pie in the oven.”

We looked at the shapes and different patterns we made with our wellies.

“I am painting the log with mud.”

“We created our own game, this is the safe bit.”

Creating magic potions.

” I am climbing like a monkey.”

Maths Week in P1D

It is Scottish Maths Week and so the children have been searching all week for the Maths Menace and we have been trying out the new maths resources in our maths trolley.

“We were counting back from 10 to 1 using the numicon to help us”

“We were matching cards and putting them into sets”

“I can count the dots “

“I can splat count on in 2’s”

“We can clap count on in 2’s”

We have been investigating how helicopters are used to rescue people. We found out about the Coastguard and Mountain Rescue . We made our own helicopters.

“Helicopter starts with one of our new sounds H”

We can use our sounds to make our names

We all worked together outdoors to create a staircase number line using items we found in our playground.

It was hard work!

We’ve had another wonderful week of learning!

P1a playing and learning

P1a have had another busy week!

We are so excited to learn new sounds and practise them every day. We can identify some sounds from the letter, tell you words which begin with the sounds  and are learning to form the letters correctly.

We can match pictures to letters.

We can sort items beginning with different sounds.

We can put letters together to make and read words!

We also play games together finding rhyming words.

We enjoy drawing with lots of detail to tell a story.

In our class we love reading in our lovely Book Corner and enjoy sharing stories! Our Literacy skills are progressing well!
