P2b so far!

It has been so lovely being back at school and getting to know each other these first few weeks in Primary 2b. The boys and girls have been working very hard and have settled quickly into all of our new routines. We have been finding out all about each others hobbies, interests and talents and making new friends with our new classmates.

We made clouds all about our favourite numbers, colours, animals and foods and created our own self-portraits!

Numeracy

We have been practising adding to make 10 in lots of different ways.

‘6+4=10’ Myles

The children worked hard in groups to solve addition word problems using concrete materials.

‘We have used numicon, cubes, rek n reks and our fingers.’- Ben

Literacy

We have been practising our sentence structure. We know to add a capital letter, finger space, a full stop and to check the sentence when we are finished.

We wrote about what makes us one of a kind and special.

‘I am one of a kind because I care about lots of people.’ – Eva

Health and Wellbeing

We have been learning about our differences and how they make us unique and special. We read a story about Elmer a very colourful elephant who is different from his friends.

The children created their own elephants which we have displayed on our wall.

We also looked at our unique fingerprints under microscopes to find the patterns.

We read The Smeds and the Smoos, The message of this story is that we should treat everyone the same no matter how they look.

We have also been learning about our emotions! We can say how we feel and why. In the morning we put our emotion critters in a jar to show how we are feeling.

‘I put my critter in the happy jar because i’m happy to be in school. I was looking forward to the reward afternoon.’- Harry

We have had a very exciting Friday! The boys and girls have been working very hard to earn house tokens for our jar. They managed to fill the jar and so received a reward afternoon of their choice. They chose  a den-building afternoon with stories, drawing and fairylights! We filled up our jar to get our reward by following our 4 class rules:

Walk Respectfully

Good Manners

Kind Children

Smart Choices

‘I was sitting with a blankie and some candles talking to my friends’- Magnus

‘I was reading a book about snakes in the library with Caleb. I had fun.’ ‘Snakes have skin.’ Charlie

Our first couple of weeks in P2C!

We have had a busy and exciting start to P2, with lots of opportunities to get to know each other and explore the different areas in our classroom. The boys and girls were very excited to meet our class teddy called Barnaby Bear and told him a little bit about themselves. “We passed Barnaby around to tell him our names and how we are feeling” – Sunny

We talked lots about what we wanted our class to feel like, look like and sound like, then thought about how this linked to the UNCRC Rights of the Child. The children worked in groups to think about their ‘dream classroom’ and shared their ideas with the class.

The boys and girls decided they would like class jobs and felt it was important to have a messenger, coat peg monitor, water bottle monitor, art trolley monitor, lunch box monitor and pencil pot monitor.

“We made hand prints for the jobs” -Jamie

Our big focus over the last few weeks has been thinking about our emotions, what makes us feel certain ways and what we can do to manage our own emotions. We really enjoyed ‘The Colour Monster’ story and made our very own rock monsters to add into our feeling jars when we come in each morning. This has meant the adults in the class can check in to see how the children are feeling each day.

“We put our monsters in the jars with how we’re feeling. Like if we’re sad, mad or happy” – Jude

We have also been thinking about diversity and what makes us unique. Reading different Elmer stories helped us to talk about why it is a good thing to be different and think about our own interests and personalities. We have even been making our own patches to join together which will make an elephant display for all of P2.

There have been lots of opportunities to revise our learning from P1, with us going over our number bonds to 10 and really focusing on our number concepts. We have used different concrete materials to make 10 and have been working hard during our mental maths sessions. In literacy, we have written about what makes us unique and created our own stories. There have been opportunities to practice our sounds and different reading strategies too.

We have spent lots of time getting to know our classroom and the different play areas within it.  We have been thinking carefully about what we would like our context for learning to be and what resources we would like in our areas. There has been lots of super building going on in our construction area and some impressive works of art created. We especially enjoyed making our own monsters out of wooden spoons.

A sneak peak into P2A’s first week

Over the past two weeks Primary 2a has been learning about different emotions. We have learned that there are many different types of emotions and as a class we were able to talk about a time we felt a certain emotion and what caused us to feel that way. We read many books this week including Elmer, which talked about why it is good to be different and why everyone is unique and unique is beautiful. The whole class really enjoyed creating their own Elmer elephant using different art materials.

Here are a few quotes describing our favourite parts of the past two weeks:

Ava – “I really enjoyed going outside with Ms Melvile and  drawing our own patterns of symmetry.”

Lilian – “My favourite part of this week was when Mrs McKim used her puppets to read us a story!”

Everyone loved creating their own self portraits using the natural materials they found outside!

Harrison and Gurleen’s favourite part of the past two weeks was EVERYTHING!

Marvellous Maths and Hilarious Holi

Another fabulous week in Primary 1D. Thank you so much to all the family members who managed along to our Open Afternoon. We hope you enjoyed hearing all about our Castle Topic and creating our Jack & The Beanstalk planters. We are excitedly watching all the magic beans to see which beanstalk reaches the castle first.

We have been continuing to work on our number bond knowledge in Maths with Miss Adair and on our Measurement skills with Mr McDonald.

This week we said goodbye to Mr McDonald who has been with us for 6 weeks. We wish him all the best in his future studies. We celebrated the end of his placement with a Holi Colour Celebration.

Fortunately, Mrs Dougall was able to take the children back to class while poor Mr McDonald stayed behind to tidy up.

Coding Our Human Beebots in P1C!

P1C brought their coding skills to life out in the woodland when they had to direct their partner/human Beebot to the treasure they had buried. They counted the number of steps they had to go and gave directions telling each other which way to turn and using positional language such as, forward 15, turn left or right. They had to evaluate and amend their instructions after watching their partner try them out, using skills such as counting on and adding. They also had to make sure they avoided any obstacles in their path.

World Book Day P1C

P1C enjoyed taking part in lots of different activities as part of World Book Day. They put their detective skills to the test by going on a book hunt which was organised by P7 pupils. They had to find lots of different books that had been hidden around the playground.

They also brought in their favourite books from home to share with each other, allowing them to find out about different types of books and to give them some ideas and suggestions for new books they might like to read.

Inspired by the author visit we took part in with Christopher Duke who wrote Lucy’s Blue Day we looked at how authors get ideas for their stories and became authors for the day and had a great time creating our own books.

P1a are Mathematicians!

We have been very busy in P.1 and are making fantastic progress in Numeracy and Mathematics.

We are getting more confident with number stories to 10 and can use a number line to help us with addition. We can work out ‘missing numbers’ like 3 and what makes 7 using a number line.

We are also more confident adding 3 numbers and can look for easier ways, for example putting the bigger number first, to help us.

We practise o’clock times (digital and analogue) and play games in pairs to do this.

We can order the days of the week.  We sing a song to help us remember what comes before/after each day. In class each morning someone is chosen to change the day on our class calendar.

We are getting better at reading number words!

We keep practising our number formation!

We have been learning to make bar graphs and can talk about what we find out looking at the graph.

We have been learning to take away and are beginning to link addition and subtraction facts.

Well done P1a!

Welcome to Castle Crookfur

Our very own Lucy was so happy to be picked to hold the Lucy Doll during our author visit. Chris Duke told us all about the inspiration for his book Lucy’s Blue Day and then read us the story.  We are now champions at handling our emotions and knowing that it’s ok to feel blue sometimes.

We have started to build Castle Crookfur. We’ve made shields, researched our family names and have been looking at features of castles which we have then used to design our own castles.

In PE we have been working on our balances and counter balances. Next we will use our counter balances and our rolls to create sequences.

In Maths we continue to work on our sorting and counting skills. Using our Addition and Subtraction skills, our subitising and our number bond knowledge we have been problem solving.

Each child was sent home today with their folder of work.  I would really appreciate if you could take the time over the weekend to have a look through the folder and discuss with your child all of their fabulous learning from this term. They are very proud of everything they have achieved, as am I.

Folders should be returned on Monday with all of the workbooks and jotters inside. Worksheets can be kept at home.

Thanks

P1C Maths Adventures

We have been working hard in maths this week!

We continue to build our knowledge of our number bonds to 10. Here we are creating towers of 10 with numicon, each layer has got to be a different way to make 10!

We were blending our words to read the Days of the Week. We can get them in the correct order!

We have also been learning about time. We can identify and match o’clock.

We also had great fun creating our own clocks.

We are getting really fast at solving addition calculations.  Here, we have correctly answered the calculations on the cards. We use different strategies like cubes, our fingers and a number line to help us count.
