Welcome to Castle Crookfur

Our very own Lucy was so happy to be picked to hold the Lucy Doll during our author visit. Chris Duke told us all about the inspiration for his book Lucy’s Blue Day and then read us the story.  We are now champions at handling our emotions and knowing that it’s ok to feel blue sometimes.

We have started to build Castle Crookfur. We’ve made shields, researched our family names and have been looking at features of castles which we have then used to design our own castles.

In PE we have been working on our balances and counter balances. Next we will use our counter balances and our rolls to create sequences.

In Maths we continue to work on our sorting and counting skills. Using our Addition and Subtraction skills, our subitising and our number bond knowledge we have been problem solving.

Each child was sent home today with their folder of work.  I would really appreciate if you could take the time over the weekend to have a look through the folder and discuss with your child all of their fabulous learning from this term. They are very proud of everything they have achieved, as am I.

Folders should be returned on Monday with all of the workbooks and jotters inside. Worksheets can be kept at home.

Thanks

P1C Maths Adventures

We have been working hard in maths this week!

We continue to build our knowledge of our number bonds to 10. Here we are creating towers of 10 with numicon, each layer has got to be a different way to make 10!

We were blending our words to read the Days of the Week. We can get them in the correct order!

We have also been learning about time. We can identify and match o’clock.

We also had great fun creating our own clocks.

We are getting really fast at solving addition calculations.  Here, we have correctly answered the calculations on the cards. We use different strategies like cubes, our fingers and a number line to help us count.

We are Reading Tricky Words in P1B!

We have been working so hard to recognise, read and write common word such as the, with and be. We know words such as me, be, he and she only have one ‘e’ even though it makes the ‘ee’ sound.

We are beginning to fix the punctuation in sentences as we know every sentence has capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

As we can identify different phonemes such as ‘th’, ‘sh’ and ‘ai’, we are becoming more confident to read tricky words in unseen texts, books and games.

We have been exploring non-fiction books and we have been introduced to the contents page. We are learning  how to use the contents page to find information.

We are sequencing stories to ensure it has a beginning, middle and end.

We are great at identifying what is true and false within a story and we are beginning to answer tricky comprehension questions by answering in full sentences.

Yesterday, we had such a special visitor! We got to meet the amazing author Chris Duke and he read to us his brilliant story called Lucy’s Blue Day.  He taught us that it is okay to be happy, sad, jealous, upset, angry and excited and to make sure we share our feelings with our families at all times.

P1C Minibeasts and More!

P1C were delighted to return to the woodland this afternoon. They were keen to hunt for minibeasts, looking under logs and digging in the ground. They compared different types of worms and looked at slugs and how they differed from worms. They also enjoyed solving problems, working together and making trails to lead each other from one part of the woodland to the other.  They hunted for gems, created their own obstacle course and estimated, counted and compared amounts of stones. They also enjoyed creating music and forming their own stick band!

“I am going to use this for a tyre race.”

Searching for worms in the mud.

We are looking for gems.

I have found a slug, it is leaving a trail.

“On our obstacle course you have to balance on the bench and you can slide down the pole.”

“I have lots of stones, I think there is about 20.”

“I think there is less than 20.”

“There are 26 that is more than 20, I am going to get more to make 100. I can count to 100.”

“We can use the sticks for drumming to make music.”

“We have created our own band.”

“We are working together to balance and keep each other from falling. If someone pushes it back. The other person can catch it, 1,2,3 go!”

P1a outdoor fun!

P1a have been exploring symmetry outdoors using various different materials in our outdoor classroom. Here are some of our symmetrical creations!

We have also been planning together, problem solving and working as a team to make our ideas happen.

While we play we are investigating and exploring. We said the harder the roll is pushed the faster it goes!

Puddles are great fun! We noticed the puddle got smaller the more we splashed in it!

We love mark making outdoors too!

Well done P1a!

Building skills in P1D

This week, we have been really enjoying learning about different features of castles. We have looked at pictures of different castles from around the world, designed our own castles and have been building a variety of different styles of castle.

There has been some fabulous learning about friction  –

“We’re moving the bricks to build the castle” “It’s much harder to move it with lots of bricks on top”.

The Knights have been having jousting battles in the tuff spot!

Mr McDonald has been teaching us about measure.

We continue to write stories based one the fabulous David Walliams books we have been reading.

“I’ve made Star Wars”

We’ve even had a chance to build the Burj Khalifa!

Outdoor Learning in P1C!

In our outdoor area, we were exploring how to safely use a hammer and nails. It was tiring work but we had great fun hammering the nails into the wood.

We also had great fun creating a pirate ship and being pirates on the ship!

Here we are preapring yummy mud pies for the pirates to eat.

We also created our own beam to practice our balancing, we were very good and didn’t fall off.

We also explore making different ramps. We made a ramp to create our own waterfall, we made it steep so that the water would run down the ramp fast.

We are Learning Number Names! (P1B)

We have been playing pass the parcel to learn the Number Names up to Twenty.

We were blending our words to read the Number Names. We can get them in the correct order!

We are super fast at solving addition calculations within 20.  Here, we have correctly answered the calculations on the cards. We use cubes, our fingers and a number line to help us count. We know we should always start with the bigger number.

We have been exploring subtraction! We know when we subtract numbers from each other, it gets smaller. Also, we know different language for subtraction, such as take away, less than and what is the difference.

We were using the numicon to count up to 100 but we found that it totalled to 304!

We were making Valentines Day cards and we hope if you received one, you loved it!

Water, Castles and The Pants Game!

This week we welcomed Mr McDonald into our classroom. He has helped us to learn both outdoors and in the classroom. We have been showing him the routines of our school day (and firing water at him across the playground!)

Mrs Dougall learned this week that it is almost impossible to take photos of moving water, but if you look very closely at the photos, you can just see it.

In literacy, we have been writing a book review and using our new sounds to discover new words. We are enjoying writing independently in our play writing jotters.

After a lot of discussion in class, we have decided that we would like to find out about Life in a Castle for our next topic. We all enjoy role playing castle games outside and building castles with the bricks inside and now we are going to learn more about the people who would live in a castle.

In maths we have been using number lines to help with addition and subtraction, making human size number lines and hopping like bunnies.

We enjoy using the PCs in the classroom to help us develop our maths skills.

I hope everyone has a fabulous mid term break. I’m looking forward to everyone coming back refreshed and ready for more learning and fun.

P1a learning and playing!

We have been busy learning about Robert Burns! We learned he is famous all over the world for his poems and stories.

We talked about being Scottish and looked at different tartans. We had a go at drawing our own tartan.

We also read a  funny Scottish poem together called ‘The Sair Finger’ and tried to work out what some of the words mean! We tried saying it in a Scottish accent!

We have also been learning to log on to the computers, find the drawing app and draw a picture.  We wanted to try making a tartan on the computer. It was tricky using the mouse to try to draw straight lines!

We are developing our Imaginative story writing. Sometimes we  have a go at writing our stories and sometimes we tell Mrs Rattray our story and she writes them for us.  Then we get together and act them out! It’s great fun.  The person who has made up the story gets to choose their character. Sometimes we have dinosaurs or unicorns or mermaids!

Fynn’s story was about a T-Rex hunting for food!

We also had a challenge to create a den to fit a person. We worked together and the tested it out!

We have also enjoyed developing our skills at the tool bench. We always remember to wear our goggles!

In the gym we are practising our gymnastics skills through balancing, jumping, and rolling.  We try to make a sequence on the apparatus with a travelling skill, a jump, a shape and a balance. Here are photos of us practising the skills.
