It was time to begin our mission for the UK Space Agency. Over the next 35 days we are going to become space biologists in order to weigh up whether it is possible to grow our own food on other planets, millions of miles away from Earth. We have been given 200 seeds to plant and observe. 100 of them have been to space with astronaut Tim Peake and 100 of them have remained here on Earth. In order to keep the experiment fair we do not know which is which, they are being referred to as blue seeds and red seeds. Here are some pictures that capture the beginning of our journey.
We had to cut 200 labels to put in the cells with our seeds
We cut the labels from milk cartons.
Milk bottles are the perfect materials for labels because the sun can still shine through them.
They had to measure 2cm by 1.5cm
We had to be very precise and measure each carefully.
Using our hands, we filled the cells evenly to the top with compost.
Every cell had to be the same.

All of our labels were numbered B1-100 and R1-100

The seeds were very, very small.
It was quite difficult to plant the small seeds.

We had to use a randomisation method to order them on the shelf.
