Personal Talks – Literacy

The class was given a homework task to prepare a presentation to give to the class. We learned how to prepare for a presentation by watching a Powerpoint on how to prepare, organise and deliver a presentation. We learned that it is important to make eye contact with your audience and to speak in a slow, controlled and confident manner.

Every member of the class completed their presentation and made their presentation to the class. Some children created a Powerpoint, some brought in pictures and props. Our subject areas were as follows :- Lego,  wrestling, animal handling, various sports, arts and crafts, swiming, Dogs Trust, and the grooming kit for horses.

We self assessed and peer assessed our presentation to determine what we did well and how we could improve our presentation skills in the future.

Here are Callum , Oliva and Laurie in action  in action giving their talks.

Literacy – The Five Senses

In Science we are learning about how sound vibrations are carried by waves throught the air. We used the Read to Learn strategy to identify the key words in a text all about the five senses. We then used these key words to create a new text of our own which was a poster all about the five senses. We drew an illustration of each of the five senses , describing them using key words and scientific vocabularly.

We chose an appropriate lauout for our posters and used a range of punctuation, openers, connectives and WOW words.

Here are Tyler and Beth M’s posters.

Numeracy – Maths in real life

During maths week in September  we discussed how maths can be applied outside the classroom. We brought in items from home to show how we could use our maths knowledge in real life.

Alisha – I brought in an egg timer and measuring spoons. We use these at home when cooking .

Beth M – I brought in a recipe for rice crispy cakes. We used the measurements to help us measure out the correct amount of ingredients.

Jessica – I brought in a cereal box which had information about weight on it.

Renaska  – I brought in digital scales which we use at home to measure the weight of ingredients.

Numeracy – Maths week

During maths week we had a visit from a lady who worked in TESCO in Barrhead who told us about  all the ways she used maths in her job. We were surprised at how often she had to use her maths skills.

Alisha  – she used maths to take inventory of stock of each product.

Riley – she used addition and subtraction to count out the correct change to give to customers.

Expressive Art

In P 5b we took a class vote to see what we wanted to call our groups in the class. in our groups we came up with themes. Then  we voted to find the top 4 choices, then voted again to find the winner.

The class chose animals – we then created our own design of our animals for display. We focussed on creating a colourful background and a creative design for our animals using strong colours.

Here are our designs :-

We voted for our favourite designs  – here are our winners.

Leopard by Cameron – “I liked the colouring on my leopard the best”

Lion by Jessica – “I was happy that the class voted for my design”.

Cheetah by Daisy – ” I am pleased with the background to my design”.

Meerkat by Beth S – ” I like the way I mixed the colours in my background.”

Bullying

In circle time P4 have talked about bullying behaviour and the effect it has on people. They talked about the way different people would feel – the person who displayed  the bullying behaviour, the person who was the target of the bullying behaviour, the teachers , other children , the parents etc. They hope to use this information and create some literacy work from it.

Numeracy

The circles and the triangles have been learning about more than  and less than. The crocodiles helped them to remember the correct position of the signs. It only eats big numbers. They were all very successful in this learning.

The squares have investigated 3D objects and  in doing so are now able to say how many faces, edges and corners these objects have. They also made these 3D objects  from nets that they cut up. Well done to Adam,Cameron C., Daisy and Grace.

Creating Posters

Primary 4/3 worked with a partner to decide on success criteria for creating a poster. They looked at a variety of ready made posters and decided with their partner why it was successful. They then used their ideas to create a list of success criteria to use when they make their own posters.

Our Brilliant Bodies – Science

Primary 4/3 have been enjoying learning about ‘The Skeleton’ and ‘The Organs’ in Science.  Primary 4 carried out research using videos and the internet to make notes. They used their notes to create these informative and eye-catching posters on their chosen human organ. Primary 3 created these labelled diagrams to show that they know the names and position of important bones of the skeleton.
