The Victorians

Last week we started learning about the Victorians. We began learning about Queen Victoria and went on to learn about the life of the Victorian people.

We did a Big Talk about the workhouse and spoke about the jobs, the conditions, the food and how we would feel if we had to live there. Then, we wrote a diary entry about a day in the life of a Victorian child in the workhouse.

This week, we started doing some art work related to the Victorians. We have painted some cityscapes which are the outlines of Victorian rooftops with chimneys and a chimney sweep. We looked at different shades of blues and oranges and mixed the paints to create different shades for each layer of rooftops.

Beth S brought in some Victorian artifacts for us to look at and discuss. Some of the items were:

  • Wash board
  • Iron
  • Tea pot
  • Money
  • Fountain pens
  • Jelly pan
  • Hot water bottle

It was fascinating to see that these were real Victorian objects and how different the same objects are today.

2018 Pupil Elections

Today we went to the polling station in our school and voted for who we wanted to be our representative for the Pupil Council, Eco Committee and the Rights Respecting Group.

Our Candidates for the elections were:

Jessica

Renaska

Laurie

Tyler

Beth M

Olivia

Callum

In the voting room there were two election booths and a voting card with each of the candidates for us to vote. When we had voted we put our votes into the ballot box.

We can’t wait to find out who will win each of the elections!

Welcome!

We are now Primary 6b and we would like to welcome you to our blog.

We are now in the senior school and we have lots of new responsibilities.

We are buddies to the Primary 1 pupils and so far we are finding it very enjoyable but tricky at times!

We are looking forward to going swimming this term, Bikeability in term 3 and some educational trips.

We will keep our blog up to date to let you see what we are getting up to in Primary 6.

Pop UK – School Show

At the end of May we worked with Pop Uk  to put on our school show. Ellen helped us to learn seven songs in just a few days!

We also learned some dances to the songs. We worked really hard and our efforts results in two fabulous shows on the 30th May.

Our audience really got involved and seemed to really enjoy the show as much as we did.

Taylor – I really like performing on the stage. My favourite thing was the Medley.

Olivia – I really enjoyed doing the actions for all the songs.

Big Talk, Big Writing

This term we have introduced Big Talk as a focus within Literacy. This is linked to Big Writing and Questioning. We were given a homework task to discuss within someone at home that related to what we were going to write about in big Writing. For example we talked about our school show and the time we spent with Ellen from Pop Uk.

Talking about our writing at home helped us to come up with good idea, WOW words and really improved our writing.

Elise  – I think big Talk helped improve my writing because I already had an idea in my head of what I was going to write.

Abbie – Big Talked helped me because talking about it at home made it easier for me to come up with ideas.

Science Centre 7th June

Our class trip was to the Science Centre this year. We went with P5a , Miss Macdonald, Miss Watt, Mrs Muir and our parent helper – Mrs Korabinska. A huge thanks to Mrs Korabinska for coming with us to help out.

We visited each of the three floors in the science centre. We had our lunch outside as it was a beautiful day. We also visited the shop.

We also took part in a Crazy Construction lab where we made cars from junk materials. We used a battery powered propeller and then raced our cars. We had a super day!

Grace – My favourite thing was the hurricane. It was lot’s of fun.

Darryl  – I liked the lab best because we got to make the cars and I liked using the hot glue gun.

Connor – I liked the pull up bars on the second floor .
