We are enjoying learning about Ancient Egypt.   Our class went on a trip to Kelvingrove Art Galleries and took part in an Egyptian workshop.  During our visit we met a man called Pat who was our tour guide and he knew a lot about Egyptians.  At the handling session we passed round a scarab beetle and had to tell the different between a 5 year and 5 thousand year old shabtis’.

I learned that the American scarab beetles were big, the Egyptian ones were medium sized and the British ones were small. Charlotte

We have been using 2publish to create posters on the phases of the moon. Selecting from different styles of poster we can draw, shade and add shape and text to them.

I like changing the font, I didn’t know you could do this on 2Publish.   Moya

I enjoyed making phases of the moon because this linked to our science Sun, Moon and Stars topic.  Kate Mc

RME

Our class have been learning about different bible stories. We watched the story of Joseph and used this story to match colours to emotions and feelings.

Science

Our topic is Sun, Moon and Stars. In our jotter we recorded the phases of the moon and found out that it takes a month for the moon to move around the earth, there are 8 phases during this time.  Whilst observing the sun, we have been out in the playground drawing round shadows and recording how they change throughout the day.

The shadows changed because the sun was lower down in the morning and had moved higher by the afternoon.  Hugh

When we went out in the morning the shadows were straight, forward and tall. In the afternoon it was to the right and was really small.  Molly

Art and Design

Warm colour blending has been our focus during art. We used red, orange and yellow paint to colour blend.  When dry, we used charcoal to add pyramids and camels.  This linked our Art skills to our Social Studies Egyptian topic.

I liked blending the colours using water to make them a bit lighter. It looked really nice when I put all the colours together.  Cameron D

We mixed Art with Social Studies I liked this because we used warm colours and that reminds me on the Egyptians.  Eva

Primary 3A Awesome Achievers February

Primary 3A have been really awesome with February fun achievements.  Our confident individuals rode their bike through the forest and can do handstand into bridge then stand up.  Our successful learners read all the David Walliams books, started Judo, learned all the notes on their new Xylophone and how to work the washing machine.  Our effective contributors made a space plane out of Lego and made fudge – YUM!

During our Financial Education topic we have been learning about money. What we use money for, how to keep money safe and what life would be like if we had no money.  The children have been discussing fundraising and researched various charities including Food4Africa and Yorkhill Children’s Charity.   After looking at familiar logos and slogans they created their own.  They designed posters which will be displayed throughout the school to promote our fundraising event ‘Bring 5, Save 5’.

Social Studies

The children were very enthusiastic about our Local Area topic.  They thoroughly enjoyed the walk around the local area.  Each child had an opportunity to survey a customer or shop keeper and they asked their questions confidently.

The children were particularly interested in the history of Giffnock, they enjoyed note taking and comparing old Giffnock with Giffnock today.

We studied Lord Rowallan as a person of local historical interest, the children were surprised at how generous he had been gifting Rouken Glen Park to us.

HWB

Following on from the safety aspect of health we looked at the safe uses of medicine.   This included short and long term use of medicine and conditions that may require medicine.  Children shared personal experience of asthma, eczema and allergies.  The children were excellent at identifying ways to feel better without having to take medicine.  They could also identify ways to keep healthy.

ICT

During ICT we have been using Beebot linked with direction in numeracy.  The children have an excellent understanding of this and could navigate Beebot competently.

Science

The children enjoyed learning about the body.  They can identify the main functions of the skeleton together with major organs.  We measured our heart rate when completing different activities and found that it increased when we did more exercise.

The children have had a great term engaging with all areas of the curriculum.  Have a lovely holiday!

Social Studies

We have started our Local Area topic by discussing what we already know and what we would like to find out about Giffnock.

Dan would like to know what the population of Giffnock is.

Hugh would like to know how many shops there are.

Molly would like to know how many children go to School in Giffnock.

The children enjoyed walking round the Local Area looking at the different styles of homes.  They also focused on how the land is used, recycling facilities available and public transport links. Finally they identified and discussed the route taken focusing on left and right turns.

‘I enjoyed the walk and discovered new places including May Terrace which is a row of terrace houses.’  Elliot

‘I liked when we passed the police station the police car put its lights on for us.’ Amir

Our focus at the moment is safety.  We are looking at the importance of having rules to keep us safe. We will be discussing what we do in an emergency and the people who can help us.

Expressive Arts

We are still focusing on developing tone and pattern using a range of materials in art.  We created lovely patterned vases using oil pastels and used bright coloured paint for the flowers to go into our vases.

I enjoyed decorating and making flowers for our vases.’ Alexander

’I liked designing the vases because I like flowers and I like painting them.’  Kate C

ICT

During ICT we have been using BBC Dance Mat to teach us how to correctly lay our fingers onto the keyboard and type efficiently.  We have really enjoyed using this resource.  We will be moving on to Beebot to link with direction in numeracy.

P3a Class Blog September 2015

Welcome to P3a’s first class blog. We have settled well into our new classroom routines and have created a class charter.

Social Studies

We have started the year with a mini topic on how to care for our school and community.  We looked specifically at litter.  Over a week the class took part in a litter study to establish which areas of the playground have the most litter.  We made a graph of these findings and discussed ways to reduce litter.

‘I liked the litter project and designing our own bins.’ Moya

‘I enjoyed litter picking because we picked up litter and put it in bin bags.’ Alexander

‘It was good because there wasn’t a lot of litter.’ Mia

Science

We have been exploring magnets.  We are trying to discover which objects attract the magnet or repel it.  We have spent time discussing fair testing and we plan to make the primary ones a magnet game.

‘Some magnets are really strong and some are not.’ Dan

‘I liked finding out North Pole and North Pole repelled and North and South Pole attract.’  Charlotte

‘I enjoyed finding out about Magnet Man!’  Elliot.

HWB

Our focus at the moment is food and nutrition.  We are looking at the foods we like/dislike and the importance of food.  We have discovered there a 5 food groups.  We have been sorting a variety of foods in these groups.

We used words like squishy, delicious, yucky, revolting and           scrumptious to describe food we did and didn’t like.’ Kate C

‘Food helps you to grow, be active and stay healthy.’ Ewan

Expressive Arts

During art we have been developing tone and pattern using a range of materials.

‘Shades of blue got lighter like a real fish bowl.  We made patterns on a fish with oil pastels and put it on a bowl like a real fish.’     James

ICT

We have been reminding ourselves of the keyboard layout and discussed some of the skills we learned in primary 2.  We have been concentrating on making graphs which has linked well with our social studies topic.

‘I like using my typing skills and Google Safe Search to know how litter can affect animals.’ Nathan

‘We put our information into Microsoft Excel to create a litter bar graph.’ Kate M
