Awesome Achievers – February 2018

February has been a busy month for Primary 6b. Three members of our class participated in East Renfrewshire’s Cross Country Championships. Freya said, ‘It was good because I got to experience running against other schools, I did well as I was motivated by my team mates.’

Niamh said, ‘I think it was good to do something different outwith school.’

Ross said, ‘It was harder than I thought because of the mud and running uphill, although I think I did well overall.’

In Social Studies, we have been continuing with our topic on natural disasters. We researched and then presented Sway presentations on our chosen natural disasters. We have shown confidence in our ICT skills and can confidently capture text, graphics, video and audio from the Internet.  Hamish said, ‘It was good listening to the groups presentations because we got to learn more facts and it was presented in a way in which we could understand.’

In Science, we have been learning all about the body systems. We have confidently demonstrated skills of working in groups and researching relevant topics. Emily said, ‘I am now confident with team work and I learnt the 5 stages of digestion. The Science work has encouraged me to learn more about the body and I would like to know more about the heart.’

In ICT, we are using Microsoft Excel to create databases linked to our natural disasters topic. We are going to use the data to create and format a variety of line and bar graphs.

Daisy commented, “I am looking forward to learning how to create different graphs and pie charts.’

In HWB, we worked in groups to write, act out and film playscripts on peer pressure. It has enabled us to demonstrate our ideas, thoughts and feelings through role play. Ellis said, ‘It was enjoyable how we could create our own play and be more confident with our acting skills.’

January Blog

January has been a month of achieving for P6b. We are very proud to have taken part in our awesome assembly about respecting and protecting our world. We developed a variety of skills and knowledge: we choreographed a dance, made masks of the earth and wrote our own emotive poems about our amazing planet.

We have been particularly sporty this month, by participating in swimming, rugby and running activities. Freya said, ‘I went to the Emirates to run for my athletics’ club and I am now the Scottish Athletics Indoor League Champion for the under elevens.’

Hamish said, ‘I have been doing very well and persevering at rugby and have been scoring tries.’

Mia said, ‘I have been working hard in developing my skills in life-saving’.

As part of our Scottish themed literacy week we have been learning all about Robert Burns and participating in a variety of cross-curricular activities. We all recited one of his most famous poems called ‘ A Red, Red Rose,’ designed and created our own tartan kilts and also made common craft videos about ‘Tam O’Shanter.’ We had to write a narrative and create our own characters in the form of a silhouette and present to the rest of the class. Daisy said, ‘It was fun learning about Robert Burns and working on our literacy skills.’

In RME, we have investigated a variety of significant figures from around the world. We learned about the life of Nelson Mandela and researched the influences and changes he contributed to.  We have linked our learning to include our school values, in particular: Respect and Inclusivity.

In ICT, we have been linking our learning to Social Studies. We have been using Microsoft Publisher to create leaflets on hurricanes as part of our ‘Natural Disasters’ topic. Emily said, ‘I really enjoyed making leaflets on the computers because it was a fun way of learning and I got to format a picture and design the background.’

We have all worked extremely hard this month and are looking forward to a restful February break!

Awesome Achiever’s Blog

End of Term Blog

November has been a month of achieving for P6b. The whole class were particularly proud of their contributions to Giffnock’s Christmas Fair.  The products we designed and made for the fair were great sellers and proved to be popular stocking fillers. Emily said: ‘I worked on the Christmas Fair stall it was a good experience because it was real-life learning and I got to sell the products we created.’

This month many of our pupils have achieved in sporting activities; Ruaridh has become more confident at tackling in rugby, Iona has learned to hold a handstand and she has almost fully trained a horse. Niamh has also been an awesome fundraiser for her gymnastics club and helped to raise the fantastic sum of £275.65.

In Social Studies we have been continuing with our Victorian topic and have been developing our research and note-taking skills when reading about the life of Dr David Livingstone. We wrote emotive letters describing his first sighting of the Victoria Falls. We also linked our art work to this topic and have been working on developing our skills in line and tone by using chalk pastels to draw the scene when David was attacked by a lion in Africa. Ellis said, ‘I enjoyed learning about David Livingstone and learned that the Victoria Falls were referred to as the Smoke that Thunders.’

We have all enjoyed participating in this months ‘Readathon Challenge.’ Ross said, ‘I have become  more interested in reading books and I have read 4 books this month.’

We all particularly enjoyed our reading in the dark session, Hamish said, ‘It was fun reading in the dark with our torches because we got to try something new.’

In ICT we have participated in ‘An Hour of Code,’ and have been trying out new coding apps and programs. Kirsten said, ‘Coding is a fun way to be able to learn how to create games.  I enjoyed using Scratch, Flappy Code and Kodu to develop my ICT skills.’

Primary 6b November Blog

This has been a busy month for Primary 6b.

In ICT, we have been developing our research skills and finding information about our Scottish Parliament mini topic. This will hopefully prepare us for our visit from the Scottish Parliament outreach teacher where we will be learning all about democracy and debating.

In RME, we have been learning about Noah’s Ark and other stories from the Bible. We have made an ark and put the things that we need or want in it e.g. family, friends, food, and necessities. We have also made a comic strip of the story. Katie said, ‘We read some books from the old and New Testament with a partner and tried to find meaning in some paragraphs from the bible. Last, but not least, we looked and read some stories in the bible and evaluated them.’

Awesome Achievements

The whole of P6b have been awesome Achievers by working so hard on developing our enterprise skills when planning for our ‘Dragons’ Den’ event. Our four qualifying teams presented their sales pitches to two Parent Council members and Mr Lawson. They all did such a fantastic job that all teams were successful in securing funding to make their winning designs.  Please look out for the finished products which will be on sale at the Christmas fair in December.

This week Ross and Matthew were chosen to represent Giffnock Primary at the Woodfarm badminton cluster event competition. They were successful at qualification and went through to the East Renfrewshire finals.  They came a magnificent fourth place.  Matthew said, ‘It was a good challenge and I enjoyed playing doubles with Ross.’

A group of pupils from our class also attended the Glasgow Athletics’ Championships at the Emirates’ Stadium. Freya, Erin, Aidan and Rory all participated and performed brilliantly.  Freya came 1st in the 600m, Rory came 3rd in the 600m and 2nd in the 60m and Erin came 4th in the 60m and 4th in the long jump.  A fantastic effort to all involved.  Freya said, ‘It was fun running in the Emirates for Giffnock North.’
