Wednesday Reflection

Wednesday within the Octave of Easter.

That’s Easter over!  Well, not quite. In fact, not by a long shot.  Easter doesn’t refer solely to Easter Sunday.  It refers to a season. A season that lasts seven weeks plus one more day to give us the fifty days to Pentecost.  So, following Easter Sunday, we have fifty days to consider the mysteries of Christ….Resurrected, Ascended and the consequent Coming of the Holy Spirit. I wonder if, on Easter Sunday, you noticed that Christ neither appears nor speaks in the Gospel Reading.  Mary Magdalene does.  So, too, does Simon Peter and probably John who humbly refers to himself simply as “the other disciple.”  There is the empty tomb. Silence and linen cloths.  Incidentally, that linen cloth we know well today as the Shroud of Turin! One other thing is present.  Seeing and Believing – “the other disciple….saw and he believed.” (Jn 20.8) By chance, because he was younger and fitter John at first kept a social-distance from Peter.  With Mary, they were by themselves as we are, in our self-isolation.  We can use this time of emptiness, silence and isolation to deepen our faith and make this Easter Season, the best ever as we await the return to a normal but hopefully better life and the great Gift of the Holy Spirit.

Let us Pray:

Risen Jesus, keep us safe, for you are our hope.

Preserve us from danger, for we take refuge in you

who live and reign forever and ever.

Amen.
