Weekly Prayers

Monday 18 February 2019.

Today is the feast day of St Bernadette Soubirous. This daughter of a miller from Lourdes is best known for being part of a group who saw a “small young lady” who asked for a chapel to be built at a cave in St Bernadette’s home town. This same “small young lady” told those present that she was the “Immaculate Conception”. This apparition of a young lady became better known as ‘Our Lady of Lourdes’ and the shrine at Lourdes is visited by over 5 million pilgrims every year; almost the same number of people as the population of Scotland!

Let us pray that St Bernadette Soubirous and that “small young lady” may continue to guide us.

Tuesday 19 February 2019.

Faith needs us to have a relationship with God. To develop and maintain a friendship or relationship with anyone we need to make sure that we are spending time and communicating with our friends.

It is the same with our relationship with God. Prayer is our way of communicating with God and spending time with him. In your day, put some time a-side for prayer.  From morning, and throughout your day and then finally before you sleep put the mobile away and give yourself some quiet time.

Our Oratory is used by many staff and pupils who spend a few minutes in quiet prayer. For us as Catholics the greatest prayer we have is the Mass and the Eucharist. We are blessed to have Mass each Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 8.25am and Eucharistic Adoration every Friday.

Sin is our refusal to become who we truly are.  In those moments when we kneel before God in penitence, or join with others in confession, sometimes we are aware of specific faults: unloving words, thoughtless conduct, selfish actions.

We can be aware of not caring enough and aware of a much more subtle temptation: to settle for less that we might be.  To choose the lesser good.  To miss the mark because our sights are fixed too low, not to perceive that we are made in God’s image.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is God’s Gift to us to help us be the best we can by clearing ourselves of sin and doubt. Fr Jonathan is available in the Oratory each Wednesday Lunch-time for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Our Father……..

 Thursday 21 February 2019.

In life we can be bogged down with so many different things that can distract us from what really matters –  Jesus.

Let us pray that we give over our worries and concerns to Jesus in the confidence of his love for us.

Jesus, I give you every aspect of my life.  I pray that I might look for you in my school, friends, and daily activities.  I pray that, in the way I live my life, I may bring others, and myself, closer to You.

Our Father …..

Friday 22 February 2019.

Today is the feast day of the Cathedra Petri, Latin for The Chair of St Peter.  The Chair of St Peter can be found in St Peter’s Basilica in Rome.  However, this Feast Day refers to the occupant, the Pope, and not the piece of furniture. The Pope’s role, as it was that of Peter, is to guide the community of Christ’s faithful, to safeguard them in the truth, and to confirm his brothers and sisters in the faith made possible in Jesus Christ.

Let us offer our prayers during this time for the Holy Father, Pope Francis.
