Google Expeditions

All S1-4 pupils have participated in a ‘Google Expeditions’ event over the past couple weeks. It was an outstanding success and pupils thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Each class were taken to the Games Hall where they were given a headset and taken on a “virtual fieldtrip”. The software allows a teacher acting as a “guide” to lead classroom-sized groups of “explorers” through collections of 360° and 3D images while pointing out interesting sights along the way.

Pupils were taken on guided tours of the Great Wall of China, The Great Barrier Reef, the Taj Mahal and many more.

The groups were led by staff who were given a tablet computer containing the software with the options of the places to visit. Staff were then able to point out relevant landmarks and facts to the pupils who viewed a 360° image. One particular area of interest for our S2 pupils was an image of ‘The Trenches’. This is an area currently being studied in the S2 History course and the experience provided them with an incredible insight into the environment in a real trench.

The event was a huge success and gave us a glimpse into the future of the classroom learning experience.
