Homework/Home Learning

WRITTEN WORK AND HOME LEARNING

Homework/Home Learning is learning which the pupil undertakes out with the classroom. This may be completed at home, in school at supported study, in the library, at a friend’s house, or some other location. Homework/Home Learning can consist of tasks set by teachers or others which include activities that complement or extend the curriculum for the pupil.

Written and research work is seen as an integral part of each Creative Arts subject unit in both planning and recording.  Homework is set as a supporting element to the practical.  This may take the form of a drawing, letters or diary in role, research into a topic area or theme or time period, a poem, a story, power point, essay, evaluation, learning musical concepts etc or preparation for the following lesson.  Not all homework will require writing; observation or practice of a performance discipline are some possible assignments.  Homework should call for reflection, consolidation or extension as appropriate and should encourage the student to respond imaginatively at their own level.

Homework is set regularly and each unit will require pupils to complete homework tasks.

S1-S3

Teachers should issue pupils in S1 to S3 with at least the equivalent of one piece of Homework/Home Learning activity per subject, per week lasting at least 30-40 minutes.

S4-S6

National Courses and programmes make specific demands on pupils, in classwork, and in Homework/Home Learning tasks. Special investigations, folio pieces, tasks requiring independent study will direct much of work completed at home. These complement the usual Homework/Home Learning assignments – reading and writing papers, worksheets, textbook exercises and so on.

The important factor here is the reinforcement of planning and organising skills. As pupils take a more mature approach to their studies, it is reasonable to expect that they will take more responsibility for organising their own Homework/Home Learning and study programme.

A non written homework should also be recorded in the pupil’s planner. e.g.

Learn lines for script to be performed next week.
