Minute of Meeting

1. Welcome and Introductions

Elaine Green, Convener for Education and Equalities, welcomed everyone to the meeting.

2. Mearns Castle HS – showcase

Jennifer Thomson, Principal Teacher of RME and Citizenship, gave an overview of the Citizenship programmes, with a specific focus on Equalities, for S1 – S6 at Mearns Castle HS.

3. Draft Parental Involvement Strategy

Catherine Dillon Ruddy, Acting Quality Improvement Officer, outlined the education department’s draft strategy with an opportunity for some discussion in small groups and feedback. Catherine will collate the feedback and incorporate it into the final document as appropriate.

4. Resolve Independent Mediation service

Sandra Mitchell, Mediation Manager, explained the role of the service and its partnership with a number of local authorities.

5. Dealing with Racist Incidents – Advice for staff

Maureen Sneddon, Quality Improvement Officer, circulated the advice cards for all education staff, prepared by the education department, on dealing with racist incidents. These have gone to all schools and pre 5 establishments for issue to all teaching and non teaching staff. Poster versions have also been issued to be displayed in prominent places.

6. Draft Education Department Equalities Delivery Plan

Maureen Sneddon, Quality Improvement Officer, outlined the background to, and key messages of, the draft Equalities Delivery Plan for the next 3 years, in line with new guidance from the EHRC and the Council’s Single Outcome Agreement and the Local Improvement Plan.

7. Dates and times of meetings for next session to be confirmed and will be available on school and council websites.
