23.10.15 – We are back at school!

Welcome back everyone after our October holiday.

A Warm Welcome

We are very pleased to say that we have a new member to our fantastic class. Her name is Caitlin. She has moved to Scotland from South Africa.

We have spent lots of time this week making sure that she feels welcome in our class. We are looking forward to hearing all about her life in South Africa.

Learning this week

Learning for Sustainability

We have chosen our options for our LFS groups (previously focus groups) and these will be starting next Friday. Each child will be working in a group with pupils from throughout the school. The groups will work together learning about various things.

Weather Topic

We made rain gauges this week and put the outside. We intend to measure the rainfall over the next few weeks and we will record our findings. We hope that it rains a little bit so we can complete our work. (not too much though, we still want to go out to play!)

“I enjoyed creating my rain gauge” (Abi)

“It was fun” (Blake)

“We enjoyed decorating it and putting the straw in it”. (Chloe)

“It was fun to go outside”. (Ahmed)

Maths

Lots of work has been going on this week.

Some children enjoyed learning about numbers to 100 and less than and greater than. We used a Hungry Crocodile to help us remember how to do it correctly.

“I liked it when we had to look at the numbers and decide what number the crocodile was going to eat” (Zara)

Others have learned data analysis and have worked on Venn and Carroll diagrams. We have also been continuing to deepen our knowledge of tens and units.

“I enjoyed making the numbers and working as a group to find the answers” (Owen).

“I am finding it ok. I am beginning to understand what happens if you have more than 9 units. (Dylan)

We also learned about 3D objects and enjoyed making 3D buildings and models. We also created our own 3D object using straws and modelling clay.

Language

We have been developing our comprehension skills this week and have been enjoying this work. We have created another imaginative story about pirates and we have created the Learning Intentions and Success Criteria as a class.

We are also enjoying self-assessing our own work .

This week in school

Art and Weather topic

We have been learning about the weather and we have been enjoying this. We made our very own windmills in art this week. We were able to design them and we used split pins and straws to hold them together.

“We have tried very hard to make them” (Orla)

“We were doing lots of good work to make them bright and pretty” (Matthew)

Science

We have been learning about food chains in our Science project. We made paper food chains to represent what a food chain is.

“We used the whiteboard to find out about food chains and to put it into the right order”. (Abigail)

“You always start off with a plant” (Dylan)

Language

This week in our writing lesson we had to create an imaginative story. Mrs McKim brought in a yellow submarine and sea monsters to help us write our story. It was fun to come up with our own ideas and to listen to the ideas of others.

“I was happy with my story” (Cara)

“I enjoy creating pictures to match my story” (Dhruv)

Numeracy

We are continuing to develop our mental maths skills and we are becoming more confident. Some of us have been learning about symmetry and others have been learning about right angles.

Ellis enjoyed playing tinny teacher when learning about right angles. He had to ensure that the children were putting the correct objects into the correct hoop. In addition to this we went on a right angle hunt around the classroom.

“It was fun” (Ellis)

Others have been learning about symmetry. Children know what this term means and have also been looking for symmetrical shapes and symmetry in a real life context.  We are looking forward to making our own symmetrical pictures.

We are looking forward to our weekend and to another busy week at school next week.

Thank you

11.9.15 P2b – Tell me more!

Overall

P2B have had a good week at school.

Some of us have been learning about tens and units.

“We had great fun and enjoyed completing all our tasks”. (Dhruv)

We have been learning about fact families in maths and some of us have found it a little bit tricky. We are determined to keep trying and to deepen our knowledge and understanding of this.

Weather topic

We watched Sean Batty. He was describing the weather for us and telling us the forecast. We looked at maps of Great Britain and the world and discussed different types of weather. We compared our weather to that of America and we are glad that we do not have tornadoes or hurricanes.

We also have been looking at weather symbols. We know what they look like and what they now mean.

Watch out everyone we can understand the weather forecast!

Class chat

We talked about the importance of being kind to one another and friendship and following class rules. We have our class rules displayed and we know what they are.

Some children thought that it would be a good idea to have “pupil of the week”.  This is in addition to plus points.

This will start next week.  One pupil will be given a certificate each week. This will be for following the class rules, being kind to others and working to be “the best we can be”.

We are all sure that EVERYONE in P2b will receive a certificate during the session.

French

The  Gruffalo’s child is helping us learn French. So far we have learned about colours and food. We can ask for some food and drink.

“I know all the different colours” (Ellis)

“ I can say chocolate in French” (Abigail)

“ I know how to say chips in French and crisps –  I have to make sure that I do not mix them up”. (Dylan)

What we are pleased about this week.

Reading

It was exciting to be given our new books.  We looked at our books and predicted what they were going to be about. We were able to do this by looking at the front cover. We had fun thinking about what our books could be about and we shared our ideas with other children in our group.

“It was fun predicting and seeing if I was right.”   Ruby

Writing

Mrs McKim brought in lots of superheroes so we could write an imaginative story. We had to think about what our Super hero looked like, what powers he/she would have and what they did to help the world. We enjoyed planning this story and we cannot wait to write about it.

“ I liked it as we got to make it up and decided what they looked like and what their powers were.”  Dylan.

“ You could design your own superhero and decide the story “  Jenny

Science

We had the chance to go outside and to investigate our surroundings. We had clipboards and we were scientists.

Fun with Experiments!

We have been carrying out lots of fun science experiments over the last few weeks.

We have been learning that different materials have different properties and that you can change a materials properties by heating them. We carried out experiments and we had to predict if they burned, melted or stayed the same. We had to test it on plastic, wood, metal, chocolate, glass and rock. Ms Zeitlin wore special glasses to protect her eyes when she was heating the materials.

We also carried out experiments that tested out if materials floated, sank, were hard or soft, absorbed or repelled water as well as if they were flexible or rigid. We worked well in groups of four. We all had different jobs in the group. We were reporters, experimenters, scribes and resource managers.

We enjoyed having fun learning about materials!

Primary 1 – March

In topic we have been learning about Transport and the different ways we can travel. We learnt about the different types of transport across the world depending whether you lived in a hot country or a very cold country. It was so interesting we wanted to make our own!! First we worked out what transport we liked and what we did not like. Then we designed our own transport and finally we used recycled materials to build our own transport. We used cardboard and cut out the shapes for the windows and then painted. We also drew wheels and lights on the cardboard to make it look like a train. Oscar built a rocket, Darcey built a bus and Eilidh started to build a Hot air balloon.

Primary 1 also this week went for a walk around the school playground. We were learning about our senses, we had to look for what we could smell, hear, see and feel. We also looked around the playground to find signs of spring. We looked closely at flowers in the plant pots that were starting to grow. When we came back to class we wrote a list of everything we had seen and heard.

In language we have also been learning about ‘Main ideas’. We were learning how to use who, what, where and when not only when we are reading but also for writing our weekly news. While in maths we were still trying really tricky word problems using our cubes, fingers, number lines and drawing as well as exploring patterns and shapes. Our favourite game this week in maths is bingo and “funky mummy.”

In art we made special cards for Mother’s day. We hope you all have a relaxing Sunday.

Primary One Blog – week ending 13th March 2015

Primary One Blog – week ending 13th March 2015

This week we have had the chance to learn a little more about transport. On Monday and Tuesday we designed our own mode of transport. We thought about what we liked and what we didn’t like about different types of transport then we worked together to create our own. Some of us brought in some junk and we got to build our own transport. Miss Welsh helped us make a tuk tuk which is a mode of transport used in very hot countries. We explored transport from around the world – we know that in Alaska they use Skidoos to get around as it’s very snowy there. In San Francisco they use trams because it is so hilly in this city. In Venice they use special boats called Gondolas because there are small rivers running through the city. We explored sea planes and hot air balloons too.

Miss Ninian came to assembly to talk to use about Red Nose Day – we know that this is a special where people try very hard to raise money to give to poorer people. We think this is a very good day !

Millie – Anne – I have learned how to make music for the very hungry caterpillar story. We had to get instruments – I had a Triangle and we had to use these to make music. I thought it was good to learn how to make music to go along story.

Rachel – I have learned to play the violin at home. My mum held it I put my cheek on the special cheek rest and my Mum got the special neck rest for me to help relax my neck. It was epic! I really want to make it more like a tune when I play and I want to be able to play let it go.

Kai – I have learned how to do better finger spaces in my writing. Miss Welsh told us that it was very important to have finger spaces in our writing because if they are not there we don’t know where words start and where words end. To do finger spaces I have to use my finger and put it at the end of a word and then start writing the next word and I can then write after my finger.

Lucas – I have learned to write and read the sound “ch”. We learned a song and we had to sing it and do the actions. Now when I see a c and a h together I know they say ch for children.
