After receiving our Read, Write, Count bags on Monday, Primary 3a have begun using some of the wonderful materials inside at home.

 “I have used the cards with my mum. We have made some addition and subtraction calculations.” (Lauren)

“I have read ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’. I liked the bit where the yellow and the orange crayon had an argument.” (Emma)

“I have read ‘Gigantasaurus’ and my favourite part was when Gigantasaurus comes and the little dinosaurs think their friend has been eaten up!” (Eleya)

Throughout the week we have completed a range of activities to help us celebrate World Book Week. On Monday we spent some time looking at different books that people had brought in as part of their costume. We all now have a list of new books that we would like to read in the future.

On Tuesday we completed a scavenger hunt using a variety of fiction and non-fiction books.

 “We were given different books and had to look inside to find different things like a witch, train or a character shouting. We used our skimming and scanning skills to help us find either a word or picture of the object.” (Ryan and Cara)

“I remembered how to skim and scan well. When you skim a book you are looking through it quickly to get an idea about what the book is about. When you scan a book you are looking for a certain piece of information like a particular word.” (Maryam, Cameron, Ethan)

“Afterwards, we completed a book quiz where we had to answer questions about popular books, authors and books which had been turned into films.” (Ayla)

Over the last few weeks we have been reading ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ as our class novel. World Book Week provided us with the perfect opportunity to delve into Willy Wonka’s world and complete some activities related to the book.

“We have been designing our own magical chocolate bars. I made one that when you bite into it sugar bursts out of it and goes on your tongue!” (Kai)

 “When you eat my ice lolly there is a different flavour for each colour and each part tastes different.” (Eilidh)

“My chocolate bar can be driven around your mouth and drops tasty pieces of caramel in your teeth. When you want it to stop you crush it between your teeth!” (Sam)

After making our mouths water with all these fantastic ideas we decided to create persuasive adverts encouraging Mr Wonka to make our delicious sweets!

 “We have used rhyme, alliteration, positive language and rhetorical questions to make people want to buy our chocolate bar.” (Chloe)

It is not just in class that we have been embracing World Book Week, as you can see below we have all worked really hard on our homework activities to either make a potato book character or take a picture of ourselves reading somewhere unusual!

 

We have really enjoyed World Book Week and can’t wait to continue to develop our enthusiasm for reading!
