Hello!

It has been such an exciting week for Primary 5 as we have been lucky enough to visit both Whitelee Windfarm and Mearns library! 🙂 Whitelee Windfarm was absolutely amazing! We were split into two groups and each group had the chance to take part in a workshop where we got to experiment with our own mini wind turbines to see what type produced the most energy. We used something called an energy meter to measure the voltage produced by the different types of turbine. It was so fun and really interesting!

We then got a bus around Whitelee Windfarm and learned loads of interesting facts about the wind turbines.

Did you know…

  • Whitelee is the biggest wind farm in the UK (there are 215 wind turbines in total!)
  • Each turbine blade weighs 12 tonnes!
  • One turbine alone can power 5000 homes!
  • Whitelee produces enough energy to power half the homes in Glasgow (that’s 300,000 homes!)
  • The turbines can reach a top speed of 180 miles per hour on really windy days!

We also learned about the wildlife at Whitelee 🙂

During the rest of the school week…

In ICT, we finished our PowerPoint presentations on Renewable energy. We started presenting these to the rest of the class and will continue presenting these next week!

In PE we started creative dance which was really fun. We looked at different stretches and balances and how different sequences of movements can be put together.

Here’s to another great week 🙂

Hello!

This week at Crookfur we celebrated Burns day by learning about the life and work of Robert Burns. We translated ‘Willie Wastle’s wife’ from Scots to Standard English which was tricky but really interesting! We all had a go reading some traditional Scots language 🙂 We then used our imagination to create a drawing of Willie Wastle’s wife based on the descriptions given in the poem.

We also learned about Chinese New Year and completed a comprehension task on this topic. During golden time we created a traditional fortune cookie box which was fun 🙂

In ICT we worked in groups to create a PowerPoint on our topic, Renewable Energy. We look forward to continuing with our power points next week!

We also learned about different landscapes in Scotland as part of our ‘My world and me’ social studies topic which we have started with Mrs Watson. We have found this really interesting so far! 🙂

In maths all groups revised area and perimeter and time as these are topics we have found a bit tricky. In addition, the Fantastic Fractions began learning how to simplify fractions. The Excellent Equations worked on division calculations while the Super Subtractions continued to learn about measure.

All reading groups began exploring biographies. Readosaurus are learning about Neil Armstrong, Writeosaurus are learning about J K Rowling and Spellosaurus are learning about Nelson Mandela.

We have attached some pictures of our classroom and of our Harry Potter competition entries for you to see.

Have a lovely weekend! 🙂

Hello,

Firstly I would like to apologise for the delay in uploading last weeks blog entry!

This week at Crookfur we have been working hard to finish our pictures for the Harry Potter competition. The competition involves creating a magical professor with the winning class going on a trip of a lifetime to discover the magic of Harry Potter at the Warner Bros studios in London!!! We will do our best to post pictures later in the week so that you can see our fabulous creations! 🙂

We have also been busy finishing our renewable energy posters and hope to have these displayed in our classroom very soon.

During PE we met our new teacher who is called Mrs black. We took part in a variety of running and sequencing activities and really enjoyed the lesson.

In language we completed our ‘Titanic: New Evidence’ note taking task and used our notes to write a report on the findings. It was very interesting and we discovered lots of new information!

The fantastic fractions have been learning more about equivalent fractions and will be continuing with this next week too. The excellent equations continued to learn about volume and capacity by estimating the capacity of different containers before filling them with water and discussing the accuracy of their estimations. The super subtractions have been focusing on the Crookfur Construction Challenge which has involved lots of tricky problem solving activities.

This week we were also lucky enough to take part in a discover learning workshop in our classroom. During this workshop we learned about roman numerals and took part in various problem solving activities which were all themed around a roman banquet! This was really fun!

We also had our class photos taken which was fun (and we all looked fantastic! 😉

It has been another busy week and Primary 5 have all worked very hard 🙂

Hello,

This week in maths, the Fantastic Fractions have been learning about fractions and have been creating some excellent examples of fractions for our maths display! The Excellent Equations have started learning about volume. Next week, they will be estimating and measuring volume by filling different sized containers with water. This week in maths, the Super Subtractions have enjoyed learning how to complete more complicated vertical calculations.

All maths groups have enjoyed taking part in problem solving activities.

In language, we were learning about note taking and we used a documentary on the Titanic to help us do this. It was really fun!! We also enjoyed revising our grammar and seeing just how far we have come since the start of the year!

We are excited to be taking part in a Harry Potter competition which involves us creating our own magical professor. The prize is a trip to Harry Potter land in London! Our creations are fantastic and Primary 5 are confident that they have a good chance of winning 🙂

We have also continued with our renewable and non-renewable energy topic and have been learning more about windfarms. We are designing posters that explore the arguments for and against the construction of windfarms which has been really interesting. We hope to visit a real windfarm soon 🙂

This week we started learning Spanish with Mrs Amigo which was really exciting!

We have all been working hard on classroom displays and our classroom is looking awesome! (Photos to follow very soon)
