Primary 3’s trip to Vikingar!

This week Primary 3 visited Vikingar in Largs to discover more about their current Social Studies topic – The Vikings. During our trip we had a fantastic time looking at artefacts and trying on clothes in the Longhouse and learning about the Viking Gods in the Hall of the Gods. Here are some of the wonderful things that we now know about the Vikings…

I’ve learned that there were 24 Viking Gods. (Ross)

I’ve learned that when it was winter the farm animals would come into the Viking’s house for 16 weeks. (Navdeep and Sophie)

I’ve learned that the colour blue was a very rich colour for Viking because it was a difficult colour to make. (Amber)

I have learned that Viking boats were called Longships and they had a dragon at the front to scare off any enemies. (Aayan)

I’ve learned that Vikings believed in sea monsters. (Lewis and Yusuf)

I’ve learned that Odin gave his eye to a serpent in exchange for 2 ravens. (Abhay)

I’ve learned that Loki was the God of mischief. (Rachel)

I have learned that Odin had two ravens called memory and thought. (Usman)

I’ve learned that Vikings only wear horns on their helmet when they are celebrating. They don’t wear them in battle because their enemies could pull them off easily. (Marcus)

I’ve learned that the Vikings would ground rye seeds to make bread. They would do this every day and it took 8 hours. (Olivia S)

I’ve learned that when a wealthy Viking died they would set a longboat on fire with arrows as part of their funeral. (Christopher)

The Vikings were famous for overlapping their shields for protection during battle. (Daniel)

I’ve learned that Vikings lived in longhouses. (Amara)

I’Ve learned that every time Frey tugged his beard two swords appeared to kill his enemy. (Ciaran)

I’ve learned that 50 to 60 people could fit in a Viking longship. (Mariyah)

I’ve learned that Vikings were lucky to live over 40. (Molly and Olivia C)

The longhouse floor was made of mud, straw, ox blood and cows dung. (Hannah)

I’ve learned that Freya was a Viking God. (Ruby)

I’ve learned that most Vikings were farmers and the battle of Largs took place in 1263. (James)

I’ve learned that Vikings wore helmets in battle. (Ravina)

I’ve learned that all the Gods had to eat golden apples to stay young. (Emily)

28th November 2014

This week in language we have started writing an imaginative story about a snowy day. We have been looking at ensuring our writing has a beginning, middle and end and that we include lots of adjectives and the correct punctuation. So far we have written some really interesting and descriptive openings and look forward to finishing our story over the next couple of weeks.

This week the cuboids have been looking at adding 9. We realised that we could do this by adding 10 and subtracting 1. We know that when you add 10 to a number the number in the units column stays the same and the number in the tens column increases. Next week we will begin to look at calculations where we will be adding 11 and moving on to subtracting 9.

The cylinders have been finishing off their work on 3D shapes this week by investigating the properties of a variety of 3D shapes. We have identified how many faces, vertices and corners a shape has and we have been looking at grouping them by similarities and differences; for example, a cube and cuboid both have 6 faces, 8 vertices and 12 edges. Next week we will be looking at the nets and what 2D shapes make up a 3D shape.

This week with Mrs McGregor in PE we have been doing gymnastics. We have started to move on to completing more difficult techniques and have also been developing our skills on the climbing frame by introducing some new equipment.

We have been continuing to learn about the Buddha’s life during RME. We learned about the impact leaving the palace had on him. Here he saw a different side to life; he saw people who were sick, people who had passed away and people who had to beg for money. This was all new to him as he had lived a sheltered life in the palace. We are interested to find out the impact this had on him and if it made him change attitude towards people.

This Friday was a very different day! We dressed up or brought in a prop from our favourite book. This gave us the opportunity to talk about books and share our favourite stories. We have completed some different book activities, such as: writing reviews, making annotated maps of the setting of our story, acting out part of the plot and writing character descriptions. Some of Primary 3’s favourite books have included: Harry Potter, Matilda, My Little Pony, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr Fox and Pirates Love Underpants.
