Big Bake Off Scotland

Busby was very ably represented at the Big Bake Off Scotland by our Head Boy and Head Girl who were asked to be judges in the national competition.  Much cake was tasted, tested and enjoyed on the way to making an informed decision.  Their expertise helped to crown Scotland’s top school cook.  A fantastic experience was had and both returned to school with large smiles and much licking of lips.

Message from Healthier Scotland

From 5th of December 2016, a person smoking in a car which is carrying passengers under 18 years of age will be breaking the law. Offenders could face a £100 fixed penalty fine.

The Smoking Prohibition (Children in Motor Vehicles) (Scotland) Act 2016, creates a new criminal offence, committed by any adult (aged 18 or over), where that adult smokes in a private motor vehicle in the presence of a child (under 18years of age), while that vehicle is in a public place. The aim of the legislation is to protect children and young people from the harmful effects of exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) in a confined space.

Exposure to second-hand smoke in cars involves higher concentrations of health-threatening chemicals than in larger, open areas. Even if the windows are opened or air conditioning is used, harmful particles can remain in the atmosphere long after the visible smoke has disappeared. The restriction of a vehicle also means individuals are unable to move away from the smoke.

We all have an obligation to protect children and young people from the risks to their life and health, caused by the exposure to second hand smoke and ensure that every child in Scotland has the best start in life. Growing up in a smoke-free environment is an important part of that.

The Scottish Government hope that the introduction of this legislation will help their drive to cut the number of children exposed to second-hand smoke to 6 per cent by 2020. This is a momentous step in pulling Scotland on the path to becoming a tobacco-free generation.

Google Expeditions

On Monday 19th December, the Google team will be visiting Busby Primary to work with our Primary 4 and Primary 5 pupils.  They will bring with them all the technology necessary to allow the pupils to explore our universe in ways we cannot normally achieve.

As part of the science work being undertaken in school, the classes are looking at Space. To this end, we have selected “Expeditions” relevant to this context.  Our P5 pupils will have the opportunity to get out into our Solar System to explore the various planets and the Sun, whilst our P4 pupils will suit up for a mission to the moon, all within the confines of their own classroom.

We are sure you will agree that this is an opportunity not to be missed, and are certain that the experience will be one the pupils will remember for a long time.

Christmas Fayre

Come along and help Santa by practising your Santa Skills. Prepare for Xmas Eve by making your advent calendar, making hot chocolate, magic reindeer food, and posting your letter to Santa. Spread some Xmas cheer by making a decoration, making a chocolate crispie Xmas tree, making a Xmas card or even by making your own snowman! If that’s not enough you can challenge yourself to fill the present sack, carry presents and deliver presents across our obstacle course and win prizes. We also have a great photo booth for you to do Xmas selfies, tombolas, and an amazing raffle with X Factor tickets to win!

Of course you can visit Santa in his grotto to show off your Santa skills – he might just have a present for you too 😉 After all that relax with a cup of tea and some home baking and listen to some Xmas tunes. Come along and begin your festive celebrations with us.  Everyone welcome.

Cluster Badminton Championship

Yesterday, we were represented by 8 pupils in the Active Schools Cluster Badminton Championships held at Carolside Primary.  All team members played extremely well, and after all of the amazing rallies and games, we finished a very respectable second.

Well done to all the participants, who represented the school fantastically and demonstrated great sportsmanship, whether in victory or defeat.

Virgin Money “Make £5 Grow”

The P7 Year Group is participating in Virgin’s ‘Make £5 Grow’ scheme.  The  project will help pupils to build their enterprise, mathematics, team building and financial skills.  The P7 children will be selling goods to pupils from the other classes all this week at break times and lunchtimes.  Prices range from 10p – £1 per item.

Rag Bag Collection

Our next Rag Bag collection will take place on Friday 11th November.  Collection bags will come home in school bags today and any donations should be sent in with your child next Friday.  We thank you in advance for your support in this environmentally friendly way of raising money for school funds.

Grow Your Pound

This week as part of Finance Week, our P5 and P6 pupils are participating in the Profitable Pound Challenge, where they have to try to create a market and maximise their profits!

At break and lunchtimes there will be the opportunity for other pupils to purchase items from their “shops”, should your child wish to bring some money to school with them.
