SQA Results

The waiting is almost over and hopefully you still have some nails left!

The SQA results will be dropping through letterboxes (or arriving by text / email for those who signed up for that service) tomorrow morning (Tues 7th Aug). There will be staff in school tomorrow morning in case of any issues arising.

We hope that the results received match the effort put in by our pupils in the months of preparation beforehand. Unfortunately that is not always the case. If you do not receive what you were hoping for, there will be a number of supports in place.

On Thurday 9th Aug, Mr Beaton (S5) and Miss Potter (S6) will be available from 10.30 am to renegotiate option choices for pupils who require to make some changes – whether because you did not achieve what you had hoped for or because you exceeded your expectations. We will also have our Careers Adviser in school at that time for those requiring further discussions.

SQA will operate a Candidate’s Advice Line from 7-10 Aug to help regarding certificates 0345 279 1000 , but it would be best to phone the school first.

Skills Development Scotland (Careers Service) will also operate a helpline from Tues 8th Aug – 0808 100 8000.

Remember the old ‘appeals’ system no longer operates but if a school has concerns about results which suggests the possibility of an error, there is action the school can and will take.

Best wishes to all our pupils for tomorrow.

Mr Sinclair

S5/6 PRELIMS

The S5/6 Prelim Examinations start on Monday the 5th of February.

A copy of the timetable can be accessed using the link below.

All of our students need to be familiar with the day and time of their exams.

All pupils have been handed a paper copy of the timetable. Pupils with additional support requirements will be issued with a separate personalised timetable from the support department.

If you would like extra advice on studying and dealing with exam stress then visit the SQA study guides section of their website (link below).

Diana Awards Recognise our Pupils

badgeTwo of our young people have had their initiative and involvement recognised at a high level when they received Diana Awards on Monday.

Our Head Boy, Adam Innes, was recognised for the work he has put in supporting other pupils in various sporting activities.  Adam has used his own skills – you may remember him as the pupil who somersaulted over my head at the PE Showcase event – to great effect. He is probably the opupilsnly pupil I would ever have trusted to make that manoeuvre!

His fellow sixth year pupil, Alana Bowden, was recognised for the work she has done in school supporting some of our younger pupils in the Support Base. Alana most recently has been very persuasive in encouraging me to part with money to help fund a lifeskills trip she has organised for some of the young people.

At an awards ceremony on Monday, co-hosted by broadcaster Bryan Burnett and our very own Tom Mackay, as part of the INSPIRE series, the two young people received their awards to recognise and reward the actions they have taken to make a difference.

Well done to both of them and a big well done to Tom who was a real hit with his relaxed style of compering.

Meet the Head Boy & Head Girl

Barrhead High has a new Head Boy and Head Girl!

Head Boy Girl I am pleased to inform you that Emily Thompson and Adam Innes secured the most votes and are therefore elected as our new Head Girl and Head Boy. Both campaigned well, made excellent speeches and won the popular approval of both staff and pupils. Adam and Emily have grown in confidence and leadership throughout their time in Barrhead High School, and I am confident that they will make a great job of their new position within the school. Their photo would have been posted sooner but one of them wanted to wait until they were suitably prepared – not saying who!

All of the other candidates who ran are now committed to being deputes and playing a full role in the senior student leadership of the school. They all deserve praise for the way they presented their speeches and their written submissions -their posters were pretty good as well! Thanks to them all for putting themselves forward.

SQA EXAM UPDATE

SQAWe are now half-way through Day 2 of the exam programme and things are progressing well.

Over the past few days we have been monitoring noise levels from the work on the new build. While it is great to see things progressing quickly, we have been conscious that we are in the noisiest period of the building work – the piledriving of the foundation supports into the bedrock.

While the noise-levels are not too high, the constant thumping could be disturbing to pupils’ concentration. Consequently, we took the decision yesterday, based on that monitoring, to re-room our exams to the opposite side of the school. When pupils sign in they may be told a different room to go to from what is on their exam timetable but otherwise things will be as before.

We will continue to operate this for the duration of the noisier work to ensure that all pupils have the best conditions possible to produce their best work.
