S4 & 5 Options Choices

doors-optionsOver the next few weeks all S4 and S5 students will be looking at the subjects they wish to continue studying in 5th or 6th year.

The following booklets explain what courses are available to students:

1.  National 5 courses

2.  Higher courses

3.  Advanced Higher courses (S6 only)

4.  Additional courses

Each student will have an interview with either their Pastoral Support Teacher or a member of the Senior Leadership Team, to help them with their decision.

If students are unclear about what a particular course involves, then they are welcome to ask for advice from a teacher or principal teacher of that subject.

Supported Study 2016

Please find the Supported Study Timetable for January and February leading up to the senior school prelims starting on the 8th of February. As you prepare for the upcoming prelims we would strongly recommend that you attend all of the sessions that are relevant to your subject.

All of the sessions will start immediately at the end of the school day and last for one hour. For more information about the individual sessions please speak to your class teachers or the Principal teacher of the department in question.

Good luck and prepare to be successful.

Digital Learning and Teaching – Public Consultation

Digital Learning ConsultationThe Scottish Government are currently involved in a Public Consultation on a Digital Learning and Teaching Strategy for Scotland.

The four main themes are:

1.  Empowering leaders of change to drive innovation and investment in digital technology for learning and teaching.

2.  Improving access to digital technology for all learners.

3.  Ensuring curriculum and assessment relevance in a digital context.

4.  Extending the skills and confidence of teachers in the appropriate and effective use of digital technology.

The consultation is open until the 17th, December 2015 and we encourage all parents to get involved here.

Scholar – Parent Information

Scholar - Parental LeafletScholar – an online resource developed by Heriot Watt university – have been updating and extending their courses to fit with the new National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher courses.

They recently published a Parent Information leaflet to help explain the benefits of using Scholar.

Scholar is an exciting resource that allows students to access free course materials for a variety of subjects.  In addition Scholar have been running Live Homework Sessions, which have proved particularly popular.

Students will require their Scholar login details to access these resources; speak to either your class teacher about obtaining these or see Mr Boag in Maths.

New School Finance Approved

Picture1Great news just through this evening – the finance for the new school has been approved. Finance Secretary John Swinney gave the go-ahead late this afternoon for 12 new capital investment projects worth £330m including ten schools … but most importantly for us, listing Barrhead High School as one of them.

We have no word as yet of the proposed timescale but he stated that “I am able today to advise local authorities … that they can proceed to contract award with the hub projects under the revised model”.

See this link for the full article .

I will keep pupils, staff and parents fully up-dated as things develop. In the meantime, we are happy to welcome this significant step towards the provision of facilities that the whole Barrhead community has been waiting for and deserve.

Mr Sinclair

Primary 7 – Showcase Event

A reminder to all of our P7 parents:

Barrhead High’s Primary 7 Showcase Event takes place this evening [Wed, 25th Nov] between 7pm and 8pm.

Parents will get a chance to visit various departments within the school and can ask questions on courses, progression or how much homework do students typically receive.

In addition, parents and pupils can visit the stalls in the dining hall to find out about other awards, extra curricular clubs and activities students can get involed with.

Rotary Club Youth Speaks Competition

IMG_2708
Well done to S3 students Ailidh Hamilton, Brogan Meechan and Peter Douglas-Kellie who took part in the annual Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition last week, hosted this year by Mearns Castle High School.

The team delivered an excellent presentation on ‘The Commercialisation of Christmas’ and were runners up in the senior category. Ailidh was the team’s main speaker, while Brogan chaired the presentation and Peter delivered Barrhead High School’s vote of thanks.

Well done to all of them!

ERC meets Malawi

MalawiFour of our young people – Nicola Miller, Sophie Turnbull, Callum Scott and Ronan Park-Patterson – are currently in Malawi (the poorest country in the world) with the ERC group of 26 pupils from all the high schools, together with some staff.

They have all worked together to raise money to fund the trip and also allow them to participate in activities that would benefit the local people. They will be working in the Kaponda district that has been a focus for the work of Barrhead Councillor Betty Cunningham for the past few years.

Malawi 2They have set up a Twitter account so folk at home can follow what they are up to – ERC Malawi2015.

Why not follow them?

Under 14s football

footballteamcoloursLast week the boys travelled to Lenzie Academy to play their 2nd round cup tie, on what was a cold and wet night the boys ran out 1-0 winners.

Goalscorer: Scott slotted the ball home from inside the penalty box after he was set up by Owen who ripped open the oppositions defence with a mazy run which started just inside the oppositions half.

MoM: Scott who accompanied his goal with a solid and industrious shift on the right side of midfield.

All of the boys worked their socks off and were superbly behaved, though special mention must go to Hassan who stepped in last minute to play in goals, and despite not being a goalkeeper, managed to keep a clean sheet.

Well done boys, the third round awaits.
