Barrhead comes to Old Trafford

img_1847Our first Premiership visit of the session saw a first visit to Old Trafford to see the mighty Manchester United take on Stoke City.

img_1819-2Although they looked the superior team on paper and had the home advantage – and much of the pressure and more of the chances! – they failed to capitalise on this and Stoke came away with a 1-1 draw.

img_1838Our seats gave a great view of the goal-mouth action.

The 45 pupils still had a great time and represented the school and themselves superbly. This contributed to making it a great experience for the 4 staff accompanying them.

Well done to all!

BLOOMING MARVELLOUS – Barrhead Waterworks

Barrhead Waterworks won a public vote in November 2013 and became Grow Wild’s flagship site in the UK. The original project was led by East Renfrewshire Council and Barrhead High pupils and staff played a key role in the setting up the project and in winning the competition at the time. Each new S1 yeargroup has returned to the site since then and helped maintain it alongside other community groups, making it a special place for the town.

DSC01634Some S4 pupils, who were the first pupils involved when they were in S1,  returned to visit the site to hear some great news. Grow Wild has today been named UK’s Best Environment project in this year’s National Lottery Awards, and it had been decided that the Barrhead Waterworks site was the most appropriate place to make the presentation.

TV presenter on BBC One’s Countryfile and star of Strictly Come Dancing, Anita Rani, was present to hand over the award and took time to talk to our pupils (Ailidh Hamilton, Cara Stevenson, Holly Campbell and Erin Brown) about the part they had played.

Football News

Hard lines to the U13 football team who narrowly missed out on qualifying for the West Regional 7s Finals recently, finishing second in their qualifying group.

Again on the park the boys were a credit to the school.

Pupils involved:

Lewis, Christopher, Ross, Andrew, Lewis, Aiden, Jamie, Jac, Ross

MOTM: Jamie

U14 football team

Team went down 2-1 against Eastwood yesterday. The boys put up a spirited display and performance, but just not enough in the end. In my opinion (obviously a tad biased) the boys deserved something from the game.

MOTM: Logan didn’t put a foot wrong the whole game.  Two goal line clearances and a number of mazy runs to help out offensively.

Goalscorer: Christopher (S1) smashed the ball into the back of the net after the goalkeeper pushed out an Owen free kick.

Behaviour was impeccable again, highlighted by opposing coach and referee.

Hard lines boys, roll up the sleeves for next week.

S1 Boys Basketball

Well done to the S1 Boys basketball team, who took to the court last night for their very first games in a Barrhead High strip.

The boys were playing away at Williamwood High School against St Ninians and Williamwood.  In the first game, the boys imposed themselves early on, but squandered a number of chances under the basket.  In defence, Jordan and Jac were keeping the St Ninians side quiet.

Into the second half, the boys continued to play well with Sean and Connor converting a few baskets.  St Ninians finished the stronger, winning the game 12-4.

In the second game against Williamwood, the boys started well and by the half-way point the game was tied at 10-10.  In the second half, Connor made a number of lay-ups to keep us in the game, but again Williamwood had too much.  The final score was 21-18 to Williamwood.  All of the boys played a part in both games and have a new found confidence, which they will carry into their next games on the 2nd Feb.

Team Captain: Connor

Man of the Match: Jordan

Under 14s football

footballteamcoloursLast week the boys travelled to Lenzie Academy to play their 2nd round cup tie, on what was a cold and wet night the boys ran out 1-0 winners.

Goalscorer: Scott slotted the ball home from inside the penalty box after he was set up by Owen who ripped open the oppositions defence with a mazy run which started just inside the oppositions half.

MoM: Scott who accompanied his goal with a solid and industrious shift on the right side of midfield.

All of the boys worked their socks off and were superbly behaved, though special mention must go to Hassan who stepped in last minute to play in goals, and despite not being a goalkeeper, managed to keep a clean sheet.

Well done boys, the third round awaits.

Under-14s Football Team

footballteamcoloursThe scores are in: U14 Football team.

Barrhead HS 1–1 Eastwood HS.

Goal scorer: J Catlow who superbly rounded the keeper when put through one on one.

MoM: E Lithgow

Williamwood HS 2-1 Barrhead HS.

Goal scorer O Wilson from the penalty spot.

MoM: O Wilson.

St Ninian’s HS 9-0 Barrhead HS.

MoM: L McGarry who gave nothing less than 100% the entire game.

Although the results aren’t quite going the way the boys would like; their behaviour, effort and attitude has been brilliant, a real credit thus far.

Thanks

Mr Herd

China Update

Group and NicolaThe reception with Nicola Sturgeon took place today (early morning our time) and she met with the East Renfrewshire group.

Euan and NicolaAs indicated in the previous post, Euan had been selected to represent the group and he spoke very well on behalf of ERC and the North East hubs. He is dressed in kung fu gear as he was also performing later – hopefully we will get some pictures of that!
