Higher Geography consists of 3 units, and an assignment
Physical Environments
- Atmosphere – a study of the causes of world climate patterns and global warming
- Hydrosphere – a study of the reasons behind river flooding
- Lithosphere – looking at landscape types covered in National 5
- Biosphere – a study of the main soil types found in the UK.
Unit 2: Human Environments
- Urban – a study of recent change in housing and transport in both Glasgow and Mumbai
- Rural – a study the impact of rural land degradation on the people and landscape of the Sahel and how this can be managed
- Population looks at the consequences of population change, both in developed and developing countries and the reasons for, and impacts of, migration.
Unit 3: Global Issues
- Climate Change looks at the physical and human factors leading to climate change, the impacts of this, and strategies to manage it.
- Development and Health covers the reasons for differing levels of development around the world, and the reasons for and management of Malaria and other health issues in the developing world.
The assignment is worth 33% of the overall grade for Higher Geography. Pupils will choose a topic to investigate, gather data using both primary and secondary techniques, then analyse their findings.
Pupils will be offered the chance to take part in fieldwork trips.
Homework
Pupils should expect 2-4 pieces of homework per month. This may consist of formal written tasks, practice at exam style questions, personal research or fieldwork.
