Distance Learning – Day 28

🏆P623 SPORTS DAY🏆

Today is Sports Day for P623 and in time honour tradition for all Scottish sports days, it rained: well just a little! However, this has not deterred our hardy athletes, not even our current state of lockdown will stop you. You have been competing in your respective back gardens for bragging rights in your families and answering the age-old question: Who is the best?

Lewis and his sister have been competing against each other in a “Bro versus Sis” head-to-head.

Zac is also competing with his sister also and they are making a family celebration out of sports day.

Great planning and preparation!

After her sports day, Jemma treated her family to afternoon tea prepared all by herself. It looks amazing!

I will share more photos with you after I have made the official P623 Sports Day video.  Stay tuned!

Distance Learning – Day 24

Last week, I posed the question on Google classroom,

I received lots of replies and the pupils have been extremely inventive and have used lots of different digital technologies to stay connected. Using their responses, I have created some word art below.

This Friday is Sports Day in P623 and this week I will be posting daily tasks to help us get ready for the big day. Today’s task was to create a poster to advertise your Sports Day event.

Kara has made this rainbow inspired poster.

Jemma is hosting hers in her back garden at 2pm.

It looks like Lewis is getting into the competitive spirit with his Sports Day as he is going head to head with his sister.

And finally, Lea has made her poster ready for the big day.

Distance Learning – Day 21

Happy Star Wars Day!

Today is Star Wars Day in P623 and throughout the galaxy and universe. First of all, I would like to thank Master Yoda for substituting for me today at such short notice, I think you will agree he did an excellent job (although his grammar needs a little improvement).

“Honoured, I was. Return to Mearns in the future, I hopefully can.  ”

Kara has drawn this excellent baby Yoda and has also entered into the spirit of Star Wars Day with her dress. That’s committment!

Kylo Ren and Yoda are having an epic battle of good versus evil. Good job Jamie and brother (I assume).

Lea has been taking part in a Star Wars themed arts and craft activity, making her own R2-D2 droid. Fantastic!

Jemma and her brother Finlay performed in a Star Wars based drama activity. Very creative!

Zac has dressed up as a Star Wars character,…

…done some colouring in with his sister and…

…played the Star Wars theme tune on his piano. Amazing! Thank you for sharing.

Delisha drew this of the droid BB-8. Lots of great detail.

Lewis spent hours on this homemade R2-D2 costume. All the effort has definitely paid off.

Gregor in the Millenium Falcon.

A few from myself.

Mr McKenna dressed up as Darth Maul and a green screen video too.

And finally, when I met Chewie.

Congratulations, you are all winners of the Star Wars 2020 digital badge for participating.

STEM Fortnight: Day 8

Today, we designed and constructed a Mars lander module that would safely deliver a payload to the surface of the planet.

We were given a design brief and a budget of £100,00,000! Our briefing stated that dropping a manned module on the Red Planet is the equivalent of dropping an egg from a height of 4 metres.

After a first test and any modifications, we finally dropped our eggs.

Well done to the winning team that successfully dropped their lander without any damage to their egg.

STEM Fortnight: Day 7

Following on from our Animal Adaptation lessons, we explored the benefits of having a layer of blubber to surviving Arctic Ocean temperatures of between -2 and 0 oC.

The Blubber Glove experiment involves first timing how long you can keep your hand in cold (2.4 oC) water.

Most people can only tolerate this for less than a minute.

Secondly, we covered our hand in lard to replicate a layer of blubber.

Again, we put our hands in the water and time it again.

Finally, we used our results to create a spreadsheet and create a chart to show our results.

This afternoon, Mr Hull visited us to demonstrate the app Bloxels which is used to create our own games.

STEM Fortnight: Day 6

Today we had two visitor assemblies, the first from Matthew who is building a cob oven for Mearns Primary school. This is an oven made of clay that has been used for thousands of years.

Our second visitors were  the authors of a the book The Highland Falcon Thief, M.G. Leonard and Sam Sedgman. The book is about a boy detective called Harrison (Hal) and in each book he solves a mystery on a real-world famous train.

Finally, we concluded our insulation experiment and identified the best and worst insulator and gave reasons why they were so.
