Live Debate with Giffnock Primary 📖🙅🏽‍♂️🙋🏼‍♀️

For our final week of Mearns Masters, the class participated in a live debate with a Primary 7 class from Giffnock Primary. The motions were all to do with ways of encouraging people to stop smoking i.e. to raise the price of nicotine products or to stop advertising nicotine products on social media.

After three excellent debates, Mrs Kennedy and the Depute Head Teacher from Giffnock gave both classes some feedback on their debates. The other Primary 7 class from Giffnock were the judges and voted Mearns Primary the winners!!

Mearns Masters Debating 👩🏽‍🏫📋

After completing our research on how damaging smoking cigarettes and e-cigarettes can be on the body, we came up with some topics to debate around this.

We looked at the format of debating and how it is structured so we could have a mini class debate around the topic of smoking. There was lots of excellent persuasive vocabulary being used and the class were able to think quickly on their feet when asked questions about any points that were made.

Solo Talks

Today in P6.22 we began presenting our solo talks to the class. Each of us chose a country which we are interested in and created informative PowerPoints that included facts about landmarks, language, famous people, cuisine and history.

During the solo talks we have been developing our ability to give constructive feedback through peer assessment.

Lots of us included pictures, animations and quizzes to enhance our presentations!

We really enjoyed learning more about different countries and cultures throughout the world.

Persuasive Writing

This week we began a new area of writing and learnt that a persuasive text is a text which argues a point of view,
to convince the reader to agree with the author. Using strong, clear, emotive language helps the reader to agree with you.

Our motion this week was ‘School Uniform Should be Banned.’ In many countries around the world, it is compulsory for children to
wear a school uniform. The rules can be very precise and schools may even specify what hairstyles pupils can or cannot have. However, there are also many schools around the world who do not require their pupils to wear a school uniform and children are, within
reason, allowed to wear almost anything they like. There are
arguments in support of both perspectives, our class discussed these within their persuasive pieces of writing.

We really enjoyed the start of this new topic as it encouraged us all to share our own beliefs and debate different ideas!

Outstanding Creative Writing

Over the last month we have spent time developing our creative writing skills through exploring characterisation and descriptive setting. Our Learning Intention today was to incorporate those skills into our own story which we spent time planning.

Miss Hardie was blown away by the fantastic descriptive writing that was used and the level of detail that we had included in our stories to transport our reader to the setting.

Now we will progress onto learning about persuasive writing techniques!

Writing – Characterisation

Today we began a new topic in our writing – characterisation. Now we have developed our descriptive language through setting the scene, we are confident in moving forward to create our very own characters.

First we analysed excerpts from famous texts including Harry Potter and Treasure Island. We were able to identify the character’s appearance, personality and special skills successfully.

We then moved on to using our character prompt pictures to create our own profiles. We discussed the importance of using VCOP to add detail and clarity to our writing. We look forward to more characterisation in the coming weeks.

Setting the Scene Writing

In our writing, we have been working on our use of descriptive adjectives to set the scene for the reader.

We enjoyed discussing a variety of different settings after seeing photographs on the board. We explored each of the 5 senses and what the character would be experiencing in that location and shared this with the class.

Mearns Monthly Mail

We have had an exciting week in 6.22 after getting started with the preparation for our very own newspaper!

Throughout the week our editors, journalists and reporters have been conducting interviews with staff and Primary 7 pupils. We have decided that each issue of our newspaper will have a ‘spotlight year group’ giving our entire school community a chance to get an insight into what is going on throughout Mearns Primary.

Meanwhile our advertising team have been busy contacting local businesses around our authority to offer a unique opportunity to showcase their company with us, a few of us even paid a trip to the Avenue in Newton Mearns to hand out flyers to the shops.

Our photographers have also been hard at work, supporting all pupils in their interviews and capturing them on camera.

We are now very excited to write up our articles, collate them all together and send our very first issue to print!
