Weekly Round-up

It has been a brilliant week listening to everyone’s Big Talks, and hearing what changes they would implement if they were to rule the world, or in fact, if they would hate that job.

We went down to the park to practise our races for sports day, and what a laugh we had. Group B went down to the ECC on Tuesday to walk their buddy up to the school for an afternoon in P1 and Group A went down on Thursday. We also had Round 3 of the Chess Championship this week.

For PE on Wednesday we were playing football, and learning to improve the accuracy of our passes.

On Thursday we were learning to use persuasive language in our writing, and focussed on using the OREO method again to make sure that we give examples to back up our opinions.

We have also been learning about 3D shape nets and have been creating our own 3D shapes. We have also been learning about tessellation and today we investigated what shapes can tesselate and what ones can’t.

Weekly Round-up

It’s been a short but busy week this week. On Tuesday we played round 2 of our Chess Championship and it’s getting very exciting, well done to those who are through to round 3.

On Wednesday we went to an exciting assembly for the big reveal to find out what athlete is going to be visiting us in a few weeks time. Then we went outside to participate in the 100m sprint as part of our Sports Championship.

We look forward to hearing everyone’s Big Talk presentations next week.

Weekly Update

This week we have been continuing with our book study. We have also been learning all about persuasive language in writing, and we were trying to persuade Mr Wonka to create our new chocolate inventions.

This week our chess championship kicked off and we completed round 1. Well done to all of our round 1 winners, we are looking forward to round 2 already.

We went to the park to practise our races in preparation for Sports Day. We also went to the ECC to collect our buddies and walk them up to the school, to spend an afternoon in P1.

Big Talk Homework

Big Talk

Title:  If I could Rule the World

You have been given a project to prepare and present a short 5-minute talk, linked to our literacy focus this term of using persuasive language.

If you were to rule the world, what changes would you make?

Use the OREO method to help you create your presentation.

The presentation should be as detailed as possible and could include:

  • A title slide
  • Some information about you and why you would make a good world leader
  • What changes would you make?
  • Give examples to support your ideas
  • Do you have any evidence to back up your suggestions?
  • Persuasive vocabulary –
          • I’m sure you would agree
          • I strongly believe
          • It is obvious that
          • It is my opinion that
          • It is easy to see why
  • A conclusion slide that summarises your key points and offers an opportunity for others to ask questions

You can use the internet or books to find out facts to back up your ideas. You could also use other ideas to enhance your talk e.g. PowerPoint , drawings, diagrams or items from home.

You can make your changes as serious or as fun as you like.

For example:

If I were to rule the world I would make sure that everyone had a safe space and house to live in, as according to Shelter Scotland a household becomes homeless in Scotland every 16 minutes. I’m sure you would agree that this is unacceptable figure and everyone has the right to somewhere safe to sleep at night. Therefore, I would build more houses and have more clothes, food and resources available to people.

It is my opinion that I would make a good world leader because I would make every weekend a long weekend. Fridays would no longer be a school day. It is easy to see why this would be a fantastic change because people would be happier as they would have more time to spend with their friends and family. They would also have more time to go and explore different places and spend more time outdoors. This is good for your health and wellbeing and can improve sleep.

You should practise your talk at home as often as possible and use a timer to help. You may want to use notes or prompt cards to help you stay on track.

Talks should be ready to be presented the week beginning Monday 11th May.

Term 4

We’ve had a great first week of term 4. This week we started a new novel study, The Butterfly Lion. We have been looking at persuasive language and how we use this in our everyday lives.

In maths we were revising our multiplication and division strategies. We also started learning about 2D and 3D shapes.

As part of our topic work we were discussing what we already know about natural disasters. This week we focussed on volcanoes and looked at how volcanic eruptions happen. In ICT we were learning how to create a secure password and we were using a website to check how secure a password is and how quickly it could be cracked.

We were also working on our skills development by building bridges that had to be at least 50cm long & that a small car could go across.
