Mental wellbeing

The content on this page looks at how parents can support their child with their mental wellbeing. It is not designed to look at specific mental health conditions.

How do we start a mental health conversation with your child / young person (young-minds-conversation-starters_final-003)?

If you have good mental wellbeing, you can:

  • make the most of your potential
  • cope with life
  • play a full part in your family, workplace, community and among friends.

Mental wellbeing is important at all times of our lives. Children and young people thrive in situations where they feel safe, secure and respected. Family and friends have a strong influence on mental wellbeing and shape the habits and behaviours which can last a lifetime.

How we can achieve this is by taking time to talk – and listen – to our children and the best way to approach this is with a casual conversation – ask them how they are feeling and letting them say what they want to say will help. Showing them warmth, keeping them active and learning, letting them hang out with friends and explore their local environment is also important. More information is available in the leaflet below.
