Why is parental involvement in wellbeing important?

Parents want their children to be happy and positive about the future. How we can achieve this is by taking time to talk – and listen – to our children, showing them warmth, keeping them active and learning, letting them hang out with friends and explore their local environment. More information is available in the leaflet below.

Health and wellbeing is important at all times of our lives. Children and young people thrive in situations where they feel safe, secure and respected. Family and friends have a strong influence on health and wellbeing and shape the habits and behaviours which can last a lifetime.

Benefits for the child

Research tells us that engaging parents/carer can have a significant impact on a child’s overall wellbeing, “Decades of research in the behavioural and social sciences have produced a rich knowledge base that explains why some people develop the adaptive capacities to overcome significant adversity and others do not. The single most common finding is that children who end up doing well have had at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive parent, caregiver, or other adult”. EAC Relationship Framework.

“Parental and family engagement is a key factor in helping all children achieve the highest standards whilst reducing inequity and closing the attainment gap. Family learning encourages family members to learn together, fostering positive attitudes to lifelong learning”. National Improvement Framework Learning Together.
