Information for group leaders

Setting up the Group

  1. Selecting staff – prior to approaching parents we recommend that you have at least 3 staff who are willing and able to commit to delivering the programme. Not all staff need to be at all the sessions. The timing, venue and number of sessions will be agreed between the staff and the parents in the group.
  2. Select parents –  we recommend a good mix of 10 – 15 parents. It’s a good idea to pick some that are potential leaders for this programme and future programmes. Parents may:
    1. Be at risk of disengaging with the school
    2. Have a child with poor engagement / attendance / attainment
    3. Low self-esteem / confidence
    4. Thinking of reengaging with the workforce
    5. New to the community
    6. Looking to develop leadership skills

3. Approach the parent’s individual and invite them to be part of the programme, were possible face to face, via the phone or Vscene. Use the resources below to tell them about the programme and ask them which social media platform they would like to use to communicate with e.g. school app, WhatsApp, Text, group Facebook or twitter account.

Ideally we would recommend that you run an informal information session for interested parents either face to face or virtual. (provision may need to be consider for child care issues):

      1. PE invite – Parent-Empowerment-Invitation
      2. PE leaflet – Parental Empowerment Leaflet
      3. PE blog – EAC Parental Empowerment Programme | Just another blogs.glowscotland.org.uk – East Ayrshire site
      4.  Introduction clips
        1. What is East Ayrshire’s Parental Empowerment Programme  –

        2. What does Parental Empowerment mean to me?

3. Parental Empowerment Service Level Agreement – Prior to involvement of the SAC Home Link Workers we will require the school to complete the Service Level Agreement below and forward to Lesley.Hillan-Fowler@east-ayrshire.gov.uk or catrina.oneil@eastayrshire.org.uk

Pre boarding and Boarding

Using the activities outlined in the pre boarding section and the selected social media platform send the group challenges to complete in order to start to build relationships.

Once the parents feel confident enough use move to face to face sessions using the materials in the Boarding Section.

In order to measure impact parents should complete the CEO task (see Boarding section). The results of these should be forwarded to Lesley.Hillan-Fowler@east-ayrshire.gov.uk or catrina.oneil@eastayrshire.org.uk.

Post Boarding

This is were the parents work with the group leaders to design own bespoke PE programme. The content, number of sessions and when the sessions will run will be agreed across the group.

All participants must complete:

  1. PE survey – see below.
  2. My journey passport – see Post Boarding section – My Journey Passport
  3. Parental Empowerment Menu – Menu Card to help them to design their programme.
