SCOTTISH POETRY VIRTUAL COMPETITION – GET INVOLVED!

ONTHANK PRIMARY ANNUAL ‘VIRTUAL’ SCOTTISH POETRY COMPETITION

Dear Families,

We are excited our young people will not miss out on this annual Onthank experience!

Poems have been posted on your child’s Blog or Teams page and staff have allocated specific online learning time to allow our young people to work on them. Staff have also shared with our young people how our 2021 competition will work.

To confirm for all families, please see information below:

1, Young people have access to their poem via Blog/Teams – if your child cannot access their poem, please contact their teacher and this can be sent directly

2, Young people should continue to be encouraged to learn and rehearse their poem, adding any acting gestures and facial expressions

3, If your child wishes to compete in our Virtual Poetry Competition we request you submit their video recording to their class teacher via email (ea firstname . surname@glow.sch.uk) by Monday 25th January 1pm.  This will give young people additional time over the weekend to work on their poem if they wish.

4, Class teachers will select their class winner from the videos submitted. All class winners will then be judged by a panel including Callum our Janitor, Heather our Catering Manager and Pupil Council/Rights Respecting Schools Chair.  Overall stage winners will be selected.

5, Overall stage winners will be invited to join our Parent Council Big Burns Virtual Quiz Friday 29th Jan to perform their poem for an audience. An anonymous vote will then take place as our families/community select our overall Onthank Primary Poetry Winner.

6, All winners will receive a special certificate in the post to celebrate this achievement and be given the opportunity to have their video included in our next Virtual Assembly.

If you have any additional questions regarding the competition please email Mr Swan on easteven.swan@glow.sch.uk and he will happily help.

Dyslexia Friendly Schools Festive Treat – FMRC

Yesterday we enjoyed a special festive treat for taking part in The First Minister’s Reading Challenge 2020. The author Matthew Fitt read his story ‘The Snowman’ and then we were taught how to draw illustrations like those in the book, ‘The Snowflake’ written by Benji Davies.  It was a most enjoyable event.  See some of our beautiful art work below.

Well done👏

Well done to Lucy P2S who was awarded a Blue Peter Badge for wonderful writing. During lockdown Lucy (who was in P1 at the time) wrote a letter to the new Primary 1s telling them what to look forward to when they start school. Lucy’s mum sent her letter to Blue Peter in May and she received her badge on Saturday.  We are proud of you 👏⭐️

House Shield Competition Update

We have had a fantastic response to our House Shield Competition and we are still receiving entries.  If you haven’t managed to get yours in yet, you still have time as we are extending the deadline to next Friday, the 20th November.

A huge thank you to everyone who has taken part so far, especially to those family members who have supported us with this.  Once all of the entries have been submitted, we look at organising a judging panel to see if can eventually decide upon four winners.  It’s going to be difficult though as the standard of entries has been so high!

Dyslexia Awareness Week 2020

Dyslexia Awareness Week will run from Monday 2nd November to Friday 6th November.
Dyslexia Awareness Week this year is all about ‘Unlocking Potential’.  To tie in with coming out of lockdown, the title reflects all the amazing and sometimes unexpected ways that children and adults have adapted to our ‘new normal’, not to mention parents, teachers and others.
To continue to develop our positive reading culture within Onthank Primary we are launching The First Minister’s Reading Challenge for 2020 during this week.  Hopefully this will build on the reading success that was enjoyed whilst completing this challenge earlier this year during lockdown.   Every pupil will receive their own reading passport and each stage will be asked to complete a reading challenge poster which will be displayed in the school library once complete.
Throughout the week the children will be involved in a range of activities and learning experiences to help raise awareness of how we support all learners in our school.  Please click below for more information.
