Active Maths and Spelling Strategies

In addition to spelling each week pupils are also encouraged to practise their number bonds and multiplication and division facts daily to ensure these are quick and accurate.

There are many active strategies you can use to practise or reinforce spelling, multiplication and division facts and number bonds.

Here are some ideas:

*Rainbow Write – using pens, pencils, crayons, paint, chalk, glitter.

*ICT – word processing, create a PowerPoint, drawing/painting tools.

*Sporty activities – skipping, bouncing on a trampoline, throwing or kicking a ball back and forth, tennis, jumping jacks, hula hooping etc.

*Clay or playdough.

*Outdoor materials – use stones, sticks, leaves, chalk, sand.

*Ransom! – use letters or digits cut out from newspapers, magazines and leaflets.

*Wordsearch or Number search – hide words or calculations in a grid.

*Music activities – create a song, chant or rap using spelling words or numeracy facts.

*Concrete materials – gems, beads, bricks, blocks, wool.

*Spelling and Maths websites / AppsĀ  – there are many child friendly and free websites and apps that have games focused on word and numeracy work.

These are just some of the many ideas that are useful in spelling and numeracy work.
