Primary Two Homework

The children should now be beginning to get to grips with their new Primary Two routines and we wanted to include some advice here about completing some of the homework tasks that may be set for your child in the coming weeks.

Key Points:

  1. Homework folders are collected in on a Monday.
  2. Homework folders are reissued on a Tuesday.
  3. Online Bug Club books have been allocated and the children should be encouraged to read one or two each week.
  4. Paper copies of Bug Club books are issued by the class teachers throughout the week and should be kept in the homework folders in your child’s school bag every day so that they can be accessed during lessons.

Sounds Homework

  • All children should learn the sounds and words on their sounds sheet (in class we refer to the sounds as PHONEMES). We expect the children to be able to read and write the sounds and the common words contained in their weekly sounds sheets.
  • Class teachers will indicate where more practice is required on particular sounds or words and we would ask parents to review previous work regularly as having a quick recall will aid the children in writing their sentences.
  • Some pupils may be provided with additional materials such as Alphabet Rainbows and magnetic letters or sounds cards to help them to make three and four letter words with their weekly sounds.
  • Take any opportunity to read additional library books/bedtime stories to your child and model good talking and listening with your child.
  • A homework jotter has been issued to complete set spelling activities. Please check the information sheet on the inside front cover for details of the tasks and check the P2 Blog for further advice.

Reading Homework

  • Paper copy Bug Club books should be read at home with your child. These will be swapped every one to two weeks. There are additional activities and prompts for you to help your child with their reading on the inside front and back covers. As part of their reading, there will be some “tricky words” that you will perhaps need to help your child to read – these are written on the inside front cover.
  • Where possible, draw your child’s attention to the words they DO know, particularly from their weekly sounds booklet – can you close the book and get your child to spell out the word that was in their book and booklet?
  • Online Bug Club details have been sent home and the children are expected to access their account every week to read one or two books that have been allocated. There is a “read to me” function that the children can initially make use of but they should try to independently read their books several times over the course of the week.

Numeracy Homework

  • Children need to have quick recall of number facts to 10 ( the numbers that add together to make ten) so please, it is essential to encourage them by asking your child to suggest 2+8, 5+5, 9+1 etc. Having these automatic recall of facts will help your child with many areas of numeracy calculations now and in future classes.
  • A numeracy/maths sheet will be provided or an online game may be allocated through the Bug Club website each week.

Topic Homework

  • Occasionally, some topic based homework may be sent home by your child’s teacher where appropriate.

Homework Club

  • A homework club is available and if you were interested then please contact the school. Your child can make use of the laptops and internet to access the Bug Club website.

We hope that these homework expectations are useful in helping you to help your child progress their knowledge about subject areas covered in class. Helping to give them that extra practice at home should help to boost their confidence and ‘have-a-go’ attitude. Please encourage your child to complete their homework, however, it should not take them all night to do. Could you also ensure that homework folders are kept in your child’s bag so that they can have access to their reading books daily.

If you have any further questions about homework or need any extra support then please don’t hesitate to contact the school or speak with our infant Principal Teacher, Miss Cook.

Your Primary Two staff,

Miss Cook, Mrs Kidd, Mrs Saxelby and Mrs Strain.
