Hello,
Happy new year! I hope everyone had a fun Christmas holiday.
This week we will be learning the phonemes ‘f’ and ‘b’.
We will be practising the spelling words we have learned before:
the, a, at, in, it, an, is, am, did, and, can, ask, are, get
We will be consolidating addition in Numeracy.
For homework this week:
Literacy
- Find items at home or outside that have the f and b phonemes at the start, middle or the end of the word, e.g. ball, frog, flower.
- Practise the spelling words above (written in red). Here are some ideas that you may want to try to help you learn your words.
Numeracy
- Practise laying out two groups of items. Count how many are in each group, .e.g. 2 spoons and 3 spoons. Then count how many there are altogether. Write your calculation down 2+3=5.
- Challenge: Can you complete some missing number problems? Use some items or toys to help you.
- 2+__=4,
- 3+__=4,
- 4+__ = 5
Scots Language
Our topic in January will be Scots Language. We will be reading the story ‘We’re Gangin’ on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen and we will be learning a Scots Poem called ‘My Wee Doggie’ by J.K Annand.
We will be having a Burns/Scots poetry competition in February. Please learn the poem, ‘My Wee Doggie’ and practise reciting the poem to a family member at home. Try and speak with a loud, clear voice and practise looking ahead at your audience. Feel free to do some actions to help you when reciting your poem.
I will give you a copy of the poem during the week for you to start practising.

Week Beginning 24th November
Phonemes
We are learning ‘g’ & ‘o’ this week.
Some ideas to practise phonemes are:
- Ask your child to spell a word which has their phoneme.
- Go on a phoneme hunt to find things that have that phoneme in it.
- Have your child use sticks or stones to make their phoneme.
- Practise forming their phoneme correctly using pen, pencil, shaving foam, in the bath with bath bubbles, etc. Correct formation can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/@uptoninfantschoolletterfor2792/videos
- Dominos – choose a domino & add the two sides. Try to write the number sentence e.g. 3 + 2 = 5
- Roll two dice, add the two numbers & write the number sentence.
- Create some addition calculations for your child so solve. Use concrete materials to help e.g. pasta, stones, sticks.
- Challenge: can you write down all the ways to make (addition) 2, 3, 4, 5 etc.
Thank you for your continued support with your child’s learning.
