Good morning everyone! I hope you are all well today. Our virtual classroom is at 11am again today. We will be doing a new word aware word and a fun  game with the words we already know. Try and have a wee look over the word aware material below first if you can.

DAILY FEELINGS

Click below to tell me how you are feeling today and see who is our pupil of the day! I’m really enjoying seeing all the lovely comments you are leaving for your friends and I have heard that our pupils of the day have felt very special when they get their certificate! Please make sure to take a minute every day to do this.

MATHS

Today I would like you to use coins to make amounts up to 20p. Make the amounts to 10p and if you manage that, keep going up to 20p.

I would like you to use the highest value coins for each which will mean you are using the least amount of coins possible. For example, 14p could be made in lots of different ways (14 x 1p, 7 x 2p, etc)but the highest value coins would be a 10p and 2 x 2p coins.

A common mistake when we first work with coins is to add in coins that don’t exist like 3p and 7p!

Here is your mental maths for this week.

WORD AWARE

Have a wee look over our Word aware words before our call today as we will be talking about our new word.

Word Aware

MATHS

We have discussed what we know about money and how it is used. Today we are going to become more familiar with the coins we use. Try to have one of each coin to use (remember we have made up bags of plastic coins to be collected from school if you need them).

You will need 1p, 2p,  5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 (£2 if you have it but they are harder to find!)

Your first task will help you to recognise each coin. You don’t need to print this out. You can write the coin values and match your coins up. Keep working on this until you know all of your coins.

Coin Recognition Activity Sheet

The following task explores the value of each coin. Each coin is worth a different amount. Put your coins in order from the lowest value to the highest. (Again, the printed worksheet is not needed; you can lay your coins out in order or draw round them in order on a piece of paper)

Good morning everyone! It’s the 1st of February today; the shortest month of the year. Do you know how many days are in February this year?

Our daily live lesson is at 11am again. Check out my maths post below to see what we’ll be talking about today.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Mrs Webb and I would like you to complete a short questionnaire each day to let us know how you are feeling. As part of the questionnaire, you will see that we have chosen a Pupil of the Day. It is always nice to try and make others feel good so each day we want you to say something nice about our Pupil of the Day. Your compliments will all be put together and sent to whoever has been chosen for that day. If you are the pupil of the day, you can say something you like about yourself or something you are proud about yourself. You will be asked to enter your name at the top of the questionnaire but Mrs Webb and I are the only people who will see your responses and the compliments to the pupil of the day will not have your name beside them. We have some lovely photos of some of you doing your work that will be great to use to make your Pupil of the Day certificate with all the lovely compliments on it. If you haven’t sent us any photos, please send one and copy both Mrs Webb and I in. The certificates will be sent to parents’ email accounts and not posted publicly. Click on the Daily Feelings link below to access the questionnaire.

MATHS

We are beginning a new topic on money today. I would like you to think about what you know about money. What is it used for? Why do we need it? What does it look like? Get a blank piece of paper and write/draw everything you know about money. (Parents please allow your child to work independently on this, without giving them ideas, so I have a clear idea of what they know)

We will be discussing this on our call today but for those who are unable to join us, you can send me your money work by email. I’m looking forward to hearing all of your ideas.

For our money tasks, you will need at least one of each coin. You can use real coins if you have them but we have made up wee bags of plastic coins that can be collected from the school if you need them.

RSPB Bird Watch Challenge

The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 2021 needs your help!

The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch will take place Friday 29th – Sunday 31st January 2021.

It is a huge citizen science project which requires YOUR help, all you have to do is watch the birds in your garden or local park for one hour and record what you have seen. It really is that simple!

Your results will help The RSPB detect if there are any species with declining populations that need focused conservation efforts.

Your results really are very important, even if you only see very few birds!

Please use the links in the school blog to access a guide on how to identify different bird species.  You will also find The Big Garden Birdwatch counting sheets, a guide to make a bird feeder and a presentation of last year’s birdwatch results.

Once you have completed the survey, please return the results to my email:  geraldine.mangan@eastayrshire.org.uk  by Friday 5th February.

Remember to let me know where, what day and time you have seen the birds.  I will collate the data and notify RSPB.

Thank you for your help and happy bird watching!

PLACE VALUE

Today we are going to be looking at the value of a number. The two phrases we talk about are quantity value and column value.

Last week we looked at quantity value and I had some great work from you all. You were able to split the number up and show what each number was made up of. Today we are going to learn about the COLUMN VALUE.

WRITING

You all created super Newspaper Reports last week! I loved reading them all – well done!!

This week we are going to be looking at creating a fact file about Scotland. I have typed up some facts about Scotland although 3 of these are infact false – the rest are true. Can you use your knowledge or research online which ones are true and which ones are false. We will be using the true facts on Thursday and Friday.

VSCENE UPDATE- So sorry our meeting couldn’t get started everyone. I made lots of attempts to get in, as did Mrs MacColl but we think there’s an error in the system. We’ll try again tomorrow. I’m disappointed.

Good morning wee superstars! I got another batch of excellent work sent yesterday. I was also delighted to have emails waiting for me this morning with work from last week to look through.

I have to apologise for a wee mistake I made in the number pattern task yesterday! I didn’t even spot it. Well done to those who corrected it.

VIDEO CALL

I am excited about our video call at 11am today. I had a wee trial run with Mrs Baillie yesterday and we managed to get logged in fine by following the link and entering the code. The details for the Vscene call are in a post below  and the  meeting PIN codes will be sent by text. Alternatively you can just use the big button to the right and put in the details.

Today we will focus on how to use Vscene. When asked to enter name, please type your child’s name. We will make sure everyone knows how to switch their mic on and off. You will be asked to keep your mic switched off until it is your turn to speak and we will do some turn taking games to get warmed up.

You can put your camera on if you want to but that is your choice and you will never be asked to turn your camera on.

Spelling

Today we are using our Elkonin boxes to spell out the ea spelling words. I have made a sway to help get you started and  to introduce your new common words. Watch the sway then write all of your spelling words into your elkonin boxes. Practise reading and writing your new common words which are each, eat, year and ask.

Maths

A wee bit of work today on understanding ‘before’ and ‘after’. In our mental maths task we have some revision of days of the week and months of the year that ask for before and after. You will also be asked for numbers before and after. I’ve made a queue of toys. Who is before Buzz? Who is after Jessie? Can you make a queue of toys and make your own before and after questions about it?

Now try some before and after number work. Remember, you don’t need to print tasks out;  writing them in your jotter is perfect!

Your mental maths task is covering time, 2D and 3D shape, number patterns and before and after. Copy the answers into your jotter.

Tomorrow at 11am we are excited to be having our first live check in with you! We really hope that you are all able to join in. We will be sending out more details by text.

Don’t forget that your packs are in school ready to be collected.

READING

New books for the week have been allocated in your Bug Club account. Please read them through. You can listen to the book being read and then have a go reading yourself. Your reading task for today is to complete the bug questions on each page.

Every Bug Club book has a list of key words and some tricky words to practise inside the front cover that we usually go through on flashcards in class. Make sure you can read them all and look out for them in your book. If there are any you find difficult, make a flashcard for each and keep going over them along with any of the common words you are working on. (the insides of cereal boxes are ideal to cut up for flashcards)

MATHS

We had some great number pattern work last week. I have created another task to practise counting forwards and back within 30 and have a further challenge to count forward and back in 5s today.

Use your laminated hundred square and whiteboard pen from your pack to help you find the counting in 5 pattern. It should go 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30…

Some of the digits are difficult to write properly.  I have made a sway with number formation rhymes to help you! Use these to practise writing any digits you have been finding tricky. Writing them over and over can help you get used to it.

30 MINUTE FITNESS

It’s important that we stay active to keep our bodies and minds healthy. My challenge to you today is to take part in 30 minutes of activity. You can choose what that activity is. I’m going to take part too; I’m really hoping it’s not too rainy so I can get out a walk with Evan and Blair. Send me an email telling me what you chose. Have fun and stay safe!
