March Home Circles @ 05.03.24

In our Home Circles this morning we all focused on two articles from the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child.

Some members of our Rights Respecting Schools Committee Group talked to us about the ABCDE of Rights and explained that this is an easy way to remember why the rights are important.

We also discussed World Water Day, which happens on 22nd March every year, and is a worldwide promise to work towards everyone around the world having access to clean, safe water.

Article 24 states that ‘every child has the right to the best possible health.  Governments must provide good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment, and education on health and wellbeing so that children can stay healthy’.

Article 27 states that ‘every child has the right to a standard of living that is good enough to meet their physical and social needs and support their development. Governments must help families who cannot afford to provide this’.

JRSO Committee

Yesterday the JRSO committee group were learning about the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bike or scooter. We carried out a survey and found that out of the 17 pupils in our group:

  • 13 pupils have a bike
  • 12 pupils have a scooter
  • only 4 pupils wear a helmet when riding their bike or scooter

We talked about the reasons for this and found that some pupils don’t own a helmet. The pupils that did own a helmet thought that they didn’t need to wear one or that it wasn’t cool.

We then designed our own helmets thinking about the colours we would choose and the safety features that we could add. Have a look at our designs.

We would encourage everyone to wear a helmet when you are riding a bike, scooter or even rollerblades/skates as it could save your life!

World Book Day

The Reading Leadership Committee group met yesterday to plan next week’s World Book Day event which will take place on Thursday 7th March.

They decided that each pupil should bring in their favourite book from home and every class will allocate a set time to “Drop Everything and Read”.  Don’t worry if you don’t have any books at home, the children will be able to borrow a book from the library.

The committee have also planned a series of activities for each stage including book themed treasure hunts for the Infants and Middle classes and Kahoot Quizzes for the Upper primaries.

In the afternoon the teachers are all going to swap around to read their favourite kid’s book to another class.

Look out for some pictures of all our exciting activities next week!
