Frankie & Benny’s – Pizza workshop

The children had a choice of different toppings for their pizza.  McKenzie, Robert, Keris and Aiden selected their favourite pizza toppings for their pizza.

It was hard work making our pizza’s but worth it! Ryan, David and Christopher thought their pizzas tasted delicious!

Kieran’s pizza design was selected by Miss McDowall and Mr Nutt as being the winning design.  Kieran’s pizza was in the shape of Kenya.  Kieran selected foods eaten in Kenya for his toppings and the colour of these foods also represent the Kenyan flag.

The range of different pizza designs to represent Kenya was fantastic! Here are some of the different designs.

Walk to School Week

This week is East Ayrshire’s Walk to School Week, so please don’t be alarmed if you see our pupils at the roadside on the pavements wearing some strange and colourful items this week. A daily theme has been created to encourage the children to walk:

Monday – wear a funny hat

Tuesday – wear odd socks

Wednesday – wear brightly coloured accessories

Thursday -wear  school colours

Friday – wear sunglasses

We all know that walking is good for us. Walking to school is not always easy, but it is a great way to exercise and keep fit. Walking to school also helps reduce pollution, and can boost pupils’ social skills and road safety awareness.

We are hoping that as the week goes on we will gain your support for the campaign and that everyone will join in the fun.

If the pupils are unable to walk we will still make sure that they reach their daily walking target by walking in school.

Rainforest – Amazonia

Our Pr.6, Pr.6/7 and Pr.7 have been working on an interdisciplinary theme that incorporates Science and Health & Well Being. The theme is supported by our Health & Well Being Development Officer in East Ayrshire and the Scottish Crimne & Drug Enforcement Agency.

The project is based around a shared responsibility which is a Columbian Government initiative supported by many international partners. It focuses on making individuals think about the impace of drug misuse, drug demand and drug production, in paricular cocaine misuse.

It is a creative and innovative project, utilising the police, health officials, Choices for life online event and pupils opinions to try and generate an attitudinal and behavioural change in a fresh way giving pupils the tools they need to make the right choices.

At Kirkstyle we have welcomed the Police taking about drugs and the law, we have scheduled a visit from health officials and Kilmarnock Academy staff to look at emergency first aid and safety and pupils and staff from the Modern languages Department to introduce our pupils to a little Spanish, the official language of Columbia.

The pupils have also explored and investigated substance misuse through an educational programme and have learned about the impact of the environment caused directly by deforestation, as a result of cocaine production.

The project is designed to be shared across our Learning Community and in turn with parents at Kilmarnock Academy’s welcome met for our parents. (Scheduled for 4th June – Pr.6 & Pr.7 pupils’ parents) A display of the pupils work and also some of their Powerpoints of research work will be on show at Kilmanrock Academy.

As part of the project our pupils visited Amazonia and got the opportunity to have some hands on experiences and see the animals they have been studying.

Sensory Garden

One of 5 different sized cylinders

We started this project some time ago with the introduction of large concrete cylinders donated by Barhale.

The weeds grew before we could do much work but this year we started in earnest. First the pupils of Room 15 had to dig out the weeds – that was a real chore – we all got very hot and dirty.

Careful you got dirt on my face!!!
Almost weeded!!!

Next  the children had to plant them up. We managed to do this because MGM Garden Centre kindly donated bulbs and we ordered 2 apple trees with some of the Morrisons vouchers.

That's right, tall ones in the middle!

Then water and water and water……. till…

A colourful show

The children then decided we needed to paint the concrete and they chose to use the Olympic colours. We were able to do this at no cost because of Repaint Scotland who donate paint to projects all over Scotland.

Olympic gardens

This done one of the children pointed out we had no black ring – so the boys brought round the very large tyres from the vegetable garden and hey presto all 5 rings were there.

Great for working or just sitting watching the world go by.

The icing on the cake was the arrival of the benches bought for us by the Parent Council and a little corner of garden heaven was complete… well almost.

You know we gardeners are never satisfied –  so watch this space!

Judo Masters!

Good slap break Aaron.
Thanks to funding secured by the school to support our Games Legacy for the future during the Olympic and Commonwealth games run up and events Primary 5 and Primary 5/6 pupils have already started their Judo P.E. sessions. These are being led by trainers from Cluarankwai Judo Club. The club are also encouraging the pupils to attend the after school class and we are thrilled to say the class is full and some of the pupils are keen to join the trainers at the clubs own training sessions in the future.

Keep moving - looking good Callum.

Healthy Hair

This year the school decided not to hold a Health Week but to incorporate all their Health and Well Being activities into the curriculum throughout the year and also to include them in a special Olympics theme in Term 4.  Therefore Mrs MacKinnon would not see the pupils for their annual Health and Well Being Assembly, so time was arranged to tackle our “Healthy Hair” theme this week. The Assembly focused  on how to achieve healthy hair through:

  • regular washing
  • brushing and combing
  • eating less saturated fatty foods
  • eating more fruit and vegetables
  • drinking plenty of water
  • and also the dreaded topic of HEAD LICE!

The pupils should all have come home with their leaflet for parents and carers and we hope that you take the time to read the advice and help Kirkstyle to beat the school bug bullies.

The Once a Week take a peek is a national parents campaign to beat the bugs. Its an easy to use guide to help fight back against the spread of headlice.

Headlice is a normal part of childhood – surveys among primary school children estimate that nearly as many as 1 in 10 pupils have had head lice. They are most common amongst children aged 4-11 who spend more time in close contact with each other.

The best known symptom of head lice is itching and seeing your child scratching but not everyone itches! The best way to find head lice and eradicate them is to look regularly as part of a family’s personal hygiene routine like brushing teeth and washing hands.

Follow the advice on the leaflet handed out or go to www.onceaweektakeapeek.com/Peek.asp for a step-by-step video and instructions on how to check for head lice. OR Use your bug busting comb and instructions issued during the last three years Health Week events or visit their website for further details at www.nits.net/bugbusting . (Primary 1 will have their combs issued in the next few weeks)

Remember if you find head lice don’t panic or be embarrassed there are some different ways to get rid of head lice and your local pharmacy or the school nurse (Natalie Sinclair) can offer advice to help you beat the bugs.
