Bugs and Beasties – Invertebrates!
Primary 3 activities got off to a flying start and some of our parents and family members who volunteered their services as helpers joined in the active learning sessions.
Anna, Haili and Demilea using cray pas.
Ami, Carmen and Gemma designing a Beebot.
Callum painted his 3D art clay tile.
Erin, Maya and Chloe sorted their Invertbrates into categories.
Mr Holmes is now a seasoned professional as a helper with Primary 3 and is due to get a Blue Peter badge as they say “Here’s one made earlier!” The boys are making 3D models of buzzy bees complete with head, thorax, abdomen, six legs and wings to show their science learning on invertebrates.
Let’s Go Fly A Kite!
Primary 2 have been looking at old things from Granny’s suitcase. They looked at old toys and then they worked together to make paper spills which they covered in papier-mâché in order to construct kites. Each kite was unique with colourful tails. Today was quite windy so we had fun testing them out.

Fun Football Fours
We are starting early with Young Killies new recruits – pupils in Primary 1 & 2 have been getting some expert skills training in P.E. Alan Mahood a Football Development Officer has been working with the pupils in both stages and Kilmarnock Football Club’s development activity officer has been working with Primary 2s to prepare them for their Fun Football Fours.
The Circus 2013
Primary 2 are currently learning about the circus. They have all been busy making circus mobiles as an enterprising homework challenge. The results are all very impressive! The mobiles are bright and colourful, can move, can make a noise and some even light up! Emily was first to meet the challenge so hers went up on display at the middle of our big top. Now that everyone’s mobile is hanging up, room 4 looks great! We were learning about symmetry so we all made and painted some clown faces which are displayed in the corridor next to our clown self registration wall. We read the story of Dumbo and then made our own cute elephants from paper plates. This week we are writing our own Dumbo stories. At gym we have been practising circus skills. We have some excellent jugglers, knife throwers(well beanbag throwers), tightrope walkers and acrobats. When “The Big Kid Circus” came to Kilmarnock, primary 2 were their best customers! This week we are going to use shoe boxes to make a circus train full of animals. Hopefully Maya or Carmen will remember to bring in some of their rabbit’s bedding for the train carriages!
Stair Garden Centre
Primary 1 have started to look hard for the signs of Spring and Summer in our school grounds and are ready to start to plant. The upper pupils cleared last year’s old bedding plants and vegetable garden ready for the new seasons growth. Therefore the pupils needed to replenish their stock so a trip to Stair Garden Centre and Nursery was needed.
The pupils got the chance to plant some seeds with the helpers.
The pupils planted nastursium plants which grow edible flowers for salads.
If you haven’t already guessed ‘Flat Stanley’ joined the Pr.1 pupils at the Garden Centre. Stanley arrived in an envelope on his holidays from Beechwood Nursery in Kilmarnock. I think he has had a great time see if you can find him elsewhere in the blog.
Badger the Mystical Mutt
The pupils in primaries 1 to 4 had a special visitor at their recent Assembly. Badger the Mystical Mutt and his two authors joined the pupils to share a chapter and answer some questions. The teachers let Badger view the class rooms and hes was thrilled to see the pictures and painting created by the pupils.
Lyn McNicol one of the authors read an exerpt from Badger the Mystical Mutt, the first in the series, and the pupils discovered that Badgers favourite food was toast – he even dreamed of towers of hot buttered toast!
Exhibition
The pupils across the school worked towards their painting targets set by their Class Teachers and practised new techniques and demonstrated their skills. The results were very professional and deserved to be exhibited for all to see.
Therefore we enlisted the help of an outside agency that specialised in art galleries to mount, frame and exhibit the pupils’ work at Parents’ Evening.
We hope you got the oppportunity to visit the gallery and we would like to thank you for your support with this project.
These pupils’ parents and carers decided to buy their art work to hang in their own galleries at home.
