Basketball stars rock on to the final

Eight schools battled it out at a basketball festival last week at Kilmarnock College’s Centre for Sporting Excellence, the first ‘finals’ event following the launch of the East Ayrshire Olympics programme.

And Onthank Primary – which goes under the banner of Brazil – emerged victorious, with Nether Robertland (Kazakhstan) second and Kirkstyle (Japan) in third place

Local Author’s visit

James McClelland

A local author arrived in school last week to speak to the whole school at Assembly and afterwards to Question Time in the Pr.2 Literacy groups. Primary 2 pupils had the opportunity to purchase signed copies of his books and the school have kept three copies of each for our own school library, for everyone to enjoy.

James McClelland is local to Ayrshire and his books about a young boy and his pet sabre toothed tiger are published locally in Darvel. The pupils listened to sections from his first two books; chapters involving diplodocus and the mighty T-rex after he had talked about his own childhood experience of writing. We hope that he has inspired some pupils to take the plunge and jump into stories and writing; using their imagination to take them on adventures.

Owl Magic

Primary 3 have started a favourite theme using the novel The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark. Owl Magic visited the school bringing some of their birds of prey to introduce to the children. Pupils in Primary 3 & Primary 3/4 got up close and personal with the smallest to the largest; a pygmy owl named Titch and an eagle owl.

School Panto

The children in Primaries 4 to 7 had a wonderful time entertaining parents, family and friends in this year’s pantomime.  They really enjoyed making costumes, scenery, learning their lines and songs.  A fantastic time was had by all.

Our Solar System – P6 & P5/6

This term Primary 6 and 5/6 have been studying our Solar System and Space exploration. To get them of to a flying start they visited the Science Centre where they investigated the experiments, watched an enthralling film about the Hubble Space Telescope and were given an insight into what is in our night sky.

The Challenge

The pupils were then set a Space Challenge as Enterprising Homework.  Along with an adult helper they had to design and make a Mars Rover…… all in 4 weeks.

These are just some of the wonderful rovers the children made.

Experiment Day

The two classes had a day of space experiments to help them understand the difficulty of working in space. They wore work goggles, very thick gloves at most experiments while at a few they wore work coveralls as well as standing on swivel boards. Good fun was had by all and a much better understanding was gained of the problems faced by astronauts working in the vacuum of space
