The Circus 2013

Primary 2 are currently learning about the circus. They have all been busy making circus mobiles as an enterprising homework challenge. The results are all very impressive! The mobiles are bright and colourful, can move, can make a noise and some even light up! Emily was first to meet the challenge so hers went up on display at the middle of our big top. Now that everyone’s mobile is hanging up, room 4 looks great! We were learning about symmetry so we all made and painted some clown faces which are displayed in the corridor next to our clown self registration wall. We read the story of Dumbo and then made our own cute elephants from paper plates. This week we are writing our own Dumbo stories. At gym we have been practising circus skills. We have some excellent jugglers, knife throwers(well beanbag throwers), tightrope walkers and acrobats. When “The Big Kid Circus” came to Kilmarnock, primary 2 were their best customers! This week we are going to use shoe boxes to make a circus train full of animals. Hopefully Maya or Carmen will remember to bring in some of their rabbit’s bedding for the train carriages!

Stair Garden Centre

Primary 1 have started to look hard for the signs of Spring and Summer in our school grounds and are ready to start to plant. The upper pupils cleared last year’s old bedding plants and vegetable garden ready for the new seasons growth. Therefore the pupils needed to replenish their stock so a trip to Stair Garden Centre and Nursery was needed.

Walking in twos to choose.
Are these the vegetables?
Parsley or chives for the herb garden?

The pupils got the chance to plant some seeds with the helpers.

The pupils planted nastursium plants which grow edible flowers for salads.

Who's in the flower beds?
Here he is again in the compost!
He even had milk and cookies.

If you haven’t already guessed ‘Flat Stanley’ joined the Pr.1 pupils at the Garden Centre. Stanley arrived in an envelope on his holidays from Beechwood Nursery in Kilmarnock. I think he has had a great time see if you can find him elsewhere in the blog.

Kelvingrove Museum & Gallery

We took the opportunity whilst in Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum to look at the different artefacts they had related to Africa and our new topic Kenya. The children were amazed by how tall the giraffe is.  The children decided to measure their heights to see if any of them were as tall at the giraffes leg!

Cassie was nowhere near the same size.
Keris was taller again but not as big as the giraffe.

Oriental Lunch

Mrs Arthur and her staff  prepared lunch with an Eastern flavour. The pupils hada taster session lunch with some tasty treats; prawn crackers, noodles, chow mein, fried rice and all served with some chopsticks on the side!

Mrs McLean joined the pupils for lunch and tried her hand at using chop sticks. A special thank you must got to Ling in Pr.7 who kindly brought some new cutlery, in the form of chopsticks, for her friends to try.
Morgan and Tiana enjoying their taster lunch.

Guide Dogs for the Blind

As part of our assembly times we invited the charity that helps the partially sighted or blind to visit us and talk to the childrne about their work.

We welcomed two visitors a helper and his trainee puppy!

This week's Star Pupils with our visitors.

The school have decided that next session we will include Guide Dogs for the Blind as one of our charity fundraising events.

Our trip to the Garden Centre

Primary 1 have been learning all about the Garden Centre. To bring our learning to life we visited Nurseries Direct Garden Centre at Stair. This provided us with a valuable opportunity to see the features of the garden centre and the role of the staff members.

We learned about plug plants

Robert took us around the greenhouses and told us all about the plants and flowers. He even took us to see the ‘dinosaur plant’. It was also known as a ‘monkey puzzle tree’ but he calls it a dinosaur plant because they have been around for many years. We liked to see it but not touch it becuase it was very spiky.

We were glad it wasn't a real dinosaur lurking in the Garden Centre. It was a Monkey Puzzle tree instead. Phew!
Robert taught us about the different types of compost.
We were impressed by all the different types of seeds.

Margo took us around the inside of the Garden Centre. We learned that the Garden Centre does not just sell flowers and plants. She showed us garden tools, pet supplies, bird feeders, gifts, books, toys, ornaments and much much more. We couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw all the packets of seeds. There were thousands. We learned that some plants can only be planted during certain months and that some need to be planted in different areas of your garden. We bought sunflower seeds to grow back in school.

We liked the farmyard garden ornaments.
We had to be careful near the garden tools as they were all very sharp. Margo told us how some of the tools are used.

After our tour of the Garden Centre we headed to the coffee shop for our snack. We enjoyed milk and shortbread. Many of the children thought this was the highlight of the trip!!

Bailey, Demilea, Callum and Carmen gave Miss Davers the thumbs up as they enjoy their milk and shortbread in the coffee shop. Delicious!
Haili, Rebecca, Emily and Ami are having a great time in the coffee shop.
We bought plants to take back to school. Haili and Rebecca enjoyed carrying the basket together with our lettuce plants.

We had an excellent time at the Garden Centre. Thanks to all at Nurseries Direct! Keep an eye on our blog to see how we become “green fingered!”

Salmon Leap into Kirkstyle !!!

An Eggcellent view of 100 salmon eggs!
In go the eggs- all 100

Something fishy was going on in the GP Room this afternoon. A representative of Ayrshire Rivers Trust brought 100 salmon eggs for us to look after and study. Every day the pupils of Primaries 3 and 4 will study the eggs to see how they are developing. Eventually we hope to release our young alevins  into the River Irvine. Wish us luck!!

Day 5

Last two chicks have been moved from incubator to brooder box. We have one big happy family now. Although we’ve still had regular opportunities to observe our fluffy friends we’ve given them time to relax and get to know each other. Having our chicks has inspired us to start preparing for next Friday’s Spring Fayre. We have had some fabulous ideas all on a chicken theme! Keep checking our blog to find out what eggciting things are going to be happening at …..CHICKEN WORLD!!!

Watching you, watching me, watching you....
Let's cuddle up!

The chicks are not being left in the school for the weekend as it ‘s important that they get fresh food ,water and clean sawdust every day, so they’re off on holiday to meet Mrs Kirkwood’s family( but not the cats!)

Native American Indians

Primary 1 received an important letter from Chief Coyahana, head of the Cheyenne Tribe. Their village has been destroyed by a fire and he needs our help to recreate a Native American Indian village in our classroom so he can get ideas for his new village. Through this topic we are developing in the following Curriculum for Excellence Outcomes:
*SOCIAL STUDIES
People, Past Events and Societies SOC 0-04a
I have explored how people lived in the past and have used imaginative play to show how their lives were different from my own and the people around me.
*SOCIAL STUDIES
People, Past Events and Societies SOC 0-01a
I am aware that different types of evidence can help me to find out about the past.
*EXPRESSIVE ARTS
Art and Design EXP 0-02a
I have the freedom to discover and choose ways to create images and objects using a variety of materials.

Our Native American Indian tribe wearing beautifully printed tunics and feathered headdresses
We made a miniature village and added our own tepees
We decided to make our own camp fire to keep us warm
We have been enjoying pretending to be Native American Indians in our village for Chief Coyahana
