Spring Fayre – 2nd March 2012
We are busily preparing for our whole school Spring Fayre on:
Friday 2nd March 2012 1.30pm – 2.50pm
To kick start the donations Friday 24th February will be a dress down day with the pupils choosing to come to school in casual clothing; the donation for this will be a bottle or raffle prize for the Fayre. So please add an extra item to your shopping this week in support of the event.
The school will be out in force to welcome you with singers from Pr.1 singing from 1.30 – 1.45, Primary 2 performing at 1.45- 2.00, Primary 3, Pr.3/4 &Pr. 4 on at 2.00- 2.15, Primary 5, Pr.5/6 & Pr.6 taking the last singing slot at 2.15 – 2.30. They will be hopefully outside at the Main Entrance, weather permitting!
The Parent Council have already asked for volunteers to help with the Bottle Stall, Raffle Stall, Balloon selling, Bouncy Castle and teas and coffee and dates for donations have been sent out in Newsletter. They will be based in the Hall on the day if you should wish to have some refreshments or try your luck at the raffle, come along and join in.
Primary 1 would like to invite you along to Room 7 where they will be selling Spring biscuits and tea light holders to brighten any room. Joining them in Room 7 will be Primary 5/6 selling homemade soup and recipes, giving you the opportunity to add to their Enterprising business venture with your own recipes. You will be able to pre order the cookbook from the managers of the enterprising company. We hope that you will take the chance to buy one of the Pupil Council tea-towels or take home some baking from Pr.6’s baking stall all in Room 7.
Primary 3 & Pr.3/4 have a whole load of clucking going on with Chicken Land!- Come and meet the new arrivals, have your photo taken, draw a lucky straw or name our new hatchlings, they will be ready and waiting for you in Room 1.
Primary 2 are in Room 4 selling beautifully hand decorated wind-chimes; ideal for any relaxing room in and out doors. Joining them will be members of the Eco Committee selling keyrings withEco Warrior messages. The corridor is also a busy place to look around with Pr.4 selling bird boxes and bird cake to attract our garden visitors.
Continue along the corridor to Room 8 to take part in a variety of fairground stall games or buy some pocket money items from the pupils in Pr.5.
Primary 7 girls would be happy to add a temporary tattoo, some nail polish or even a design using face paint to any adult or child (with parental permission). Groups of Pr.7 would like to make your car gleam as well with the cost of a full car wash only being £3.00 in the front playground – this would also allow you to park in the school grounds for the time of the Fayre.
The rest of Pr.7 will be runners helping the school run this event smoothly, this means you will be allowed to collect your own child to visit the Fayre but still keeping everyone safe.
Little Schools Birdwatch 16th – 30th January 2012
Young children have a natural curiosity about the world around them, and the Little Schools’ Birdwatch was a great way to encourage and develop this. Children in Kirkstyle have begun to discover and learn about the different birds that share their outdoor space at school and at home.
Little Schools’ Birdwatch (especially designed for early years classes) and Big Schools’ Birdwatch are schools and groups counterparts to the Big Garden Birdwatch, which the R.S.P.B. has run annually for over 30 years. By joining in, Kirkstyle was participating in the world’s biggest birdwatch!
The Little Schools’ Birdwatch took place over two weeks from 16 -30 January 2012. We had some help along the way, as all cooking classes made bird cake and feeders to hang in the outside spaces. Once completed we sent our results to the R.S.P.B. they then collect them all together from across the U.K. This helps them to see how birds are doing across the U.K. It also means that the R.S.P.B. can feed back the national results to the pupils along with a certificate of participation.
Spark a lifelong interest in nature and follow our handy hints for successful birdwatching:
- Start early! Birds are more likely to feed and be easy to spot in the morning.
- Set up some feeders and some water – in a convenient pace near your windows if possible.
- You could try to make some speedy bird cake- its a fantastic messy activity! Children love to make it just as much as the birds like to eat it!
- OR – Why not buy a bird feeder with some bird cake at the Spring Fayre.
- You could make a ‘hide’ or role play area. Disguise with a sheet or large sheets of paper – remember eye slits to peep out of.
- If you prefer you could watch from outside, perhaps in the local park, at the beach or a wooded area to spot different species.
Wooden Spoon Challenge – Pr.1-7
The pupils have been involved in a variety of enterprising homework challenges and now we would like to try a whole school challenge.
The mission should you wish to accept it is to use your wooden spoon in the most creative and interesting way you can think of to make a new character/object.
The staff have already undertaken this challenge to offer the pupils some guidance, advice and ideas from their first hand experiences, these are on display outside the Office.
You can use any materials to decorate and create. The whole family can get involved and help. Have fun!

We have allocated two weeks to this challenge and hope that we will have a huge variety of spoons to display throughout the school at our Spring Fayre event this term.
