🏎️🎬 Rallying into the New School Year! 🎬🏎️

Our P5–7 pupils got their new school year off to an exciting start today with an outdoor learning and digital technology challenge inspired by Scottish rally legend Colin McRae!

We began by hearing the incredible story of Colin McRae and the determination, quick thinking and problem-solving he showed when things didn’t quite go to plan during a rally. We talked about how sometimes the best solution isn’t immediately obvious – and how perseverance, creativity and a willingness to try something different can help us overcome a challenge.

Then it was time to head outdoors! 🏁

Working in groups, pupils were challenged to design and build their own rally tracks on the playground. Armed with playground chalk and a selection of resources including cubes, foam blocks and construction materials, each group created their own unique course, complete with twists, turns and obstacles for their rally cars to tackle.

There was some fantastic teamwork, creativity and problem-solving on display as pupils shared ideas, adapted their designs and worked together to bring their tracks to life. 💡

Next came the digital challenge – turning their rally courses into stop-motion movies! 🎬 Using the iPads, pupils took a series of photographs, moving their cars a tiny amount between each shot to create the illusion that they were racing around the tracks.

This involved plenty of experimenting! Nanci-Rose’s group discovered that the secret to getting a really effective stop-motion video was keeping the iPad completely still and only moving the car between photographs. Other groups quickly learned from their discoveries, and it was lovely to see pupils sharing ideas and improving their films as they went.

Everyone had great fun taking on different roles as directors, photographers, designers and animators, and there was lots of excitement when they finally got to press play and watch their cars race around the courses they had created! 🏎️💨

What a brilliant way to start the year – learning outdoors, working together, solving problems and developing our digital skills, all while having lots of fun! 🌟
